3 Topics EE0001 How Electricity gets to us? Dr. Koko KH LAM, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering Electricity and Magnetism, Energy and Use of Energy We cannot imagine our daily life without electricity. Nowadays, it is always too easy for us to flip a switch or plug a cord to get electricity. However, the process of getting electricity is not that straightforward. This talk explores the ways how the electricity comes from various energy sources to us. The participants will recognize the electricity generation, transmission and distribution from the viewpoints of Electrical Engineering. BME0001 to Ultrasound, X-rays and CT Medical Imaging Technologies Dr Hin Chung LAU, Teaching Fellow, Department of Biomedical Engineering Medical Physics [Secondary 4-6, Elective part IX] Medical devices such as ultrasound scanners, X-rays and computed tomography (CT) have enabled radiologists to see through the body without surgery. In this lecture, students will get to know how ultrasound and X-rays are generated and processed by the computer to generate an image. The operating principle of CT imaging in relation to conventional X-ray will also be discussed to highlight the importance of the advancement of digital computers and image reconstruction algorithms. Such technological advances help students to appreciate the importance of ICT, Physics and Mathematics in Biomedical Engineering. ME0001 Kinematics of Car Ir Elsa TANG, Senior Instructor, Department of Mechanical Engineering Physics Speed, Velocity and Acceleration Renewable energy Solar Energy Nowadays, electric cars are commonly used over the world, such as Tesla. In these two years, Formula Electric car (Formula E) is also the big racing event in Hong Kong. When you design electric car, you should have theoretical and practical knowledge about electric motor, batteries, gearbox, power, torque, speed and acceleration. In this lecture, students will learn the basic theory of kinematics of racing car and different application to car performance. Apart from the introduction of electric car, solar car is also the new trend in the renewable energy and sustainable environment. 3
4 ISE0001 Robotics and Machine Perception Dr Velvet CHEN, Teaching Fellow, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering Physics, Science, Information and Communication Technology Robotics and AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology have received tremendous attention in recent years. This lecture will provide some basic information on the history and applications of robotic and machine sensing technologies. EIE0001 to the Internet of Things Dr Ka Hong LOO, Associate Professor, Department of Electronic and Information Engineering Data sampling and quantization, data representation, and computer networks Applications of Internet of Things (IoT) systems Definitions of modern information systems Data sampling and quantization Data representation in computing systems Computer networks AAE0001 Aircraft Force and Motion Dr Peng LU, Assistant Professor, Interdisciplinary Division of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering Force and Motion, Newton s Second Law of Motion Newton s Second Law of motion describe the effect of a net force on the speed and/or direction of motion of an object state Newton s Second Law of motion and verify F = ma experimentally use newton as a unit of force use free-body diagrams to show the forces acting on objects determine the net force acting on object(s) apply Newton s Second Law of motion to solve problems involving motion in one dimension It has been 114 years since the Wright brothers made the first successful sustained, controlled, powered heavier-than-air manned flight. However, majority of the people today still wonders, how is it possible that an aircraft can fly? After all, we re looking at machines that can weigh over 500,000 kilograms. In this short lecture experience, students will learn the basic, but fundamental theory, the four forces and rigid body equation of motion of flight of an aircraft. The lecture will be completed with a short quiz. 4
5 COMP0001 to Computing and Game Technologies Dr Henry CHAN, Associate Professor and Associate Head, Department of Computing Dr Peter NG, Teaching Fellow, Department of Computing The Compulsory Part: Information Processing:- (a) to Information Processing (b) Data Representation (c) Presentation of Information Basic Programming Concepts:- (a) Problem-Solving Procedures (b) Algorithm Design (c) Algorithm Testing The Elective Part: Multimedia Production and Web Site Development:- (a) Multimedia Production Software Development:- (a) Programming (b) Programming Languages Nowadays, computing plays an important role in our daily lives. In the game area, interactive computing or game technologies (e.g., virtual reality (VR) technology and augmented reality technology) have enabled the development of many innovative and interesting applications. In this lecture, we shall introduce the basics of game technologies, including VR technology. We shall also use interesting examples to demonstrate some basic concepts. 5
