5 Abstract Konawaena High School students took on the design and construction of our ROV Zomgz Bill as a class project for the 5 th Annual MATE ROV Competition. This was the first time that Konawaena High School has entered a team, so none of the team members had any experience with ROV s. While our team members were all adept with computer and automotive hardware, none of us had any previous experience with robotics. However, this weakness benefited our team in a way, as we were forced to rely on our own creativity and imagination. Some of the more ingenious ideas our group came up with, was the use of electrical solenoids to hold and release the electronics module, and a ballast system that we created from an air manifold found at a pet store. Because of our limited resources, we designed our craft around the mission tasks, thus maximizing the efficiency of our time and materials. In building Zomgz Bill, we decided to focus on functionality, and reliable performance of mission specific tasks rather than excessive speed, maneuverability and elegance. 5

6 Challenges Our first year has been a very challenging and interesting one. Facing many problems such as our lack of experience, financial, and our lack of knowledge on our subject. Our lack of experience made for a lot of trial and errors, trying to fallow our design we drew up came as a huge challenge after we had some trouble with our tool and our release system to get the box into its location. Using only the items that were provided such as our motors, PVC pipe. Some purchase we made were our second camera, solenoids, some PVC pipe, Zip ties, our 3 rd camera was donated. Our lack of experience made for some really interesting designs as far as our ROV drawing board is concerned, spending many hours drawing many designs, and gallons of coffee later we came up with our current design. Our hardest challenge to date was all of the design team has ADD and did not take their medication. Future Refinements As our ROV neared completion, new ideas and concepts started to emerge. Having little time to refine it with our competition nearing we had to deal with what we had and made it. Our tool was our first and only refinement, after spending countless hours our lead designer Bryan Young came up with our hydraulic arm. Lessons Learned As a team and individuals we have learned many life lesions and skills to bring with us to our future jobs. Critical thinking played the main role in our ROV concept drawing boards we gained knowledge of robotics and testing our limits and pushing ourselves like never before we have prevailed 6

7 on top. With our sense of teamwork and our cooperation as a team we have come up with a design that is sure to bring us to the top. The Rationale behind Our Design The design rationale behind our ROV was influenced strongly by budget constraints, and mission tasks. Our ROV was built almost exclusively with the materials provided by the original grant. While we eventually were forced to purchase some other components to properly complete our vehicle, we were unable to do everything we wanted with our ROV because of budget constraints. The other major consideration behind our design was the mission tasks. We designed our vehicle around the tasks that needed to be completed, particularly dropping the box into the frame. While all other teams at our regional competition were unable to complete that mission task, we were able to because we incorporated that task into our design while other teams did not. 7

12 Careers ROV have multiple uses in our highly advanced society. They are used to perform jobs which are highly dangerous for humans to perform, such as bomb and explosive materials handling, deep sea environments. Other uses of ROVs include: Pipeline Inspection: In pipeline inspection, the ROV is used for inspecting broken oil lines to make sure there are no leaks, inspecting of sewage lines, and other pipes located under water in the ocean. Surveying: In surveying, the ROV is used in underwater exploration such as exploring shipwrecks, maintaining underwater ship maintenance, and observing underwater seismic activity. Drill Rigging: In drill rigging, the ROV observes the progress of the drilling in oil pockets, installing hardware on drills, installing new tools to the drill, and other accessories. Planetary Exploration: In planetary exploration, ROVs explore the surface of the other planets where it would be too dangerous to humans, observe planet earth from space, and map out the surface of other planets. 12
