ESIP Decision Support Tools Catalog and Community of Practice: DSTCCP Phase 2, Shailendra Kumar and Richard Eckman Co-chairs, Energy and Climate Working Group Sky Bristol, USGS ESIP 2014 Winter Meeting, Washington DC January 8, 2014
Decision Support Tools and Community of Practice (DSTCCP) Phase 1 ( ) Concept proposed by OSTP and AWWI Workshop Platform Prototype Application #1: Renewables Site Selection (DSTCCP-R) AWWI LAT Key Value Demonstrated Contextualization of data records for a particular purpose and the ability for community interaction within that context Phase 2 ( ) Standardize Methodology Support diverse gov t projects NASA, USGS, EPA, USGCRP Application #2: Extreme Events (DSTCCP-E) DSTCCP-R (Renewables) User Interactions, Interoperability AWWI LAT WGA CHAT 2
Standard APIs USGS ScienceBase Platform National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative Millions of records accessed through a standard API Same resources being made available to other applications and portals Some through Drupal and some running as simple HTML/ JavaScript applications Standalone Drupal application with a Drupal database not sustainable Need APIs to Connect to USGS s ScienceBase and others (system owner level) Data.gov and others (aggregator level) Explore a set of frameworks for data-driven portals Dynamically assemble and contextualize records from multiple cataloging platforms as opposed to having local registries 3
Standard APIs: Methodology Engineering problem Do something that crosses a number of different topical domains, uses several different catalog backends, leverages open standards, and can be widely publicized and touted as the way to do things instead of everyone trying to build the same thing in slightly different ways. Research Dovetail other ESIP work Semantic Web Discovery Clusters Drupal How the "contextual knowledge" part of this can best be encoded and disseminated for broad consumption. 4

DSTCCP Going Forward Platform Provide APIs for access to and interaction with related government and NGO work USGCRP, CEQ, USGS, NASA AWWI and NWCC Make it more user-friendly to serve as a template Enable ESIP to serve in an advisory role, especially for crossagency effort. Applications DSTCCP-E (extreme events) Harness ideas and needs inputs from city and local governments planning sustainability and resilience Build a prototype to support CEQ Climate Resilience Toolkit DSTCCP-R (Renewables) Continue work with WGA, NWCC Engage community of developers, stakeholders and users in a dialog about usefulness and transparency Support AWWI in building a community dialog for wildlife preservation 7
