3 Introduction What is the role of large scale testing in knowledge transfer from new ideas to market? How research infrastructures contribute to the standardisation process? What the EU has done to promote the use of research infrastructures in the Construction Sector? What the JRC will be doing to enable access to its research infrastructures? 3

4 Large Scale Testing Enable the validation of a concept at full scale Evaluates the interaction of all elements at global level, including, where relevant, non-structural components Allows the calibration of numerical models for parametric analysis and full validation of a class of structures Is carried out in large research infrastructures and ran by highly specialised staff High investment costs 4

22 Opening up Access to JRC RIs JRC successfully delivered Transnational Access to its RIs under DG RTD Capacities Programme (FP5, FP7) JRC has made high investments in its Research Infrastructures Some of these facilities are unique or complementary to other RIs in Europe High demand from European researchers These facilities are strategic for EU research Make these facilities accessible to EU Users in

25 Conclusions Research Infrastructures play an important role in knowledge transfer from research to industry by a: Push effect of innovation on Standards through Pre-Normative Research Pull effect of competitiveness from Standards through demonstration projects assessing performance and feasibility of new concepts Pull effect of harmonisation from Standards on the calibration of design methods 25

26 Conclusions Access of users to Large Research Infrastructures: Has enabled to support the innovation, competitiveness and standardisation process in the EU Should continue to be promoted, in particular for further harmonization and simplification of the Eurocodes 26
