Establish a bridge with the Building industry (architects, developers, construction sector ) Acceptance by architects, contractors, building developers and end-users to integrate from the project design of a building through the whole construction process (planning, choice of material, components and systems) also the operational costs of the building Establish a link between the PVTP and the ECTP Evelyne Schellekens 5 2nd General Assembly 2007, Berlin

6 Aim of the Inter-ETP Willingness to collaborate with equally other ETP s on key points related to Energy in Buildings To explore synergies between Strategic Research Agendas in construction related priorities To exchange views on possible future collaboration in the field of buildings and energy Evelyne Schellekens 6 2nd General Assembly 2007, Berlin

7 The Inter-ETP Working Group Set up a permanent inter-etp Working Group on Construction (2 representatives of each TP) Meeting on 25 October, 14 November 2006, 16 January, 27 March (with DG Research) between the 6 (7) European Platforms Objectives: Start a strategic cooperation on the Energy/ building aspects Set up a commun political document on Energy/buildings in order to demonstrate a strong strategic interest of the various represented industrial sectors towards this topic. 8 Standardisation is another field which could lead to cooperation Crossed participation to events organised by each platform (e.g. PV Conference co-chaired with ECTP New rising era for photovoltaic integration in buildings in Brussels on 2nd of February 2007 during the Sustainable Energy Week) Evelyne Schellekens 8 2nd General Assembly 2007, Berlin

9 Embracing climate change Many European Businesses are choosing to embrace the challenge of climate change How do we achieve a low-carbon economy without destroying economic growth? 11 The SET-Plan DG TREN: Communication «Towards a European Strategic Energy Technology Plan» SET- Plan Consultation and hearings with TP s Energy Efficiency is identified as first priority and buildings sector as one of the most critical sectors BIPV identified as a huge potential market for the PV industry Evelyne Schellekens 11 2nd General Assembly 2007, Berlin

12 Most of the energy efficient innovations in the Building sector are undertaken independently and locally, in the perspective of short term profits. To overcome this obstacle, there is an obvious need to take a longer term approach, energy efficiency can only be observed over time. The common challenge for all market players is to include the energy aspects/consumption as an integral part of the life cycle costs of a building. 13 Conclusions (1) Need to accelerate and co-ordinate the research investments of the different players of the energy efficient construction market : PV manufacturing and equipment building industries A coordinated approach will enable consistent technological progress Investment in R&D should be increased over the next few years. 14 Conclusions (2) Next to electricity production, PV can become an energy- significant option for the construction industry Promote PV as a multi-functional building component with added value for all market players: from an energy efficiency and ecological point of view, creativity in the project design, alternative building material to roof tiles, shadowing elements or sun blinds, facade integration added value of the building, the esthetics, imago or prestige! Enhance the architectural aspect: to design environmental friendly and energy efficient buildings with comfort and esthetics (imago & prestige) Evelyne Schellekens 14 2nd General Assembly 2007, Berlin
