Perception (from the Latin perceptio, percipio) is the organisation, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. Perception can be defined as our recognition and interpretation of sensory information. Perception also includes how we respond to the information. We can think of perception as a process where we take in sensory information from our environment and use that information in order to interact with our environment. Perception allows us to take the sensory information in and make it into something meaningful. A banknote can be considered a physical object with a perceptual landscape that emits sensory information that will be shaped by the experiences, expectations and context of the user experience. A banknote is a vehicle or a vector containing a range of technologies designed to protect and stimulate the user perception experience via visual or tactile messages. Everything our industry does, directly or indirectly, comes back to this and the end emotional response to such a user experience is based on trust, confidence and certainty. 2 Seminar Objective The goal of this seminar is to create awareness of the importance and impact of human behaviour and perception science on the design and issue of a new series of banknotes. The seminar will present delegates with a range of valuable and practical information of use to stakeholders in a new series project, in particular central banks and banknote designers. The overall objective is to demonstrate the value that data from perception studies can bring to a central bank and banknote designer when elaborating a new series design concept. One may simplify this activity by calling it market or consumer research. In essence this will involve techniques, strategies and approaches commonly used to assess and measure what banknote users like/dislike about banknote design/content and how they react to certain components on a banknote landscape. This information can then be processed to support the decision-making process by central banks and designers and optimize design content and configuration to deliver the desired messages and triggers to banknote users.
