Robot-Era Objective and Distinctive Features The OBJECTIVE of the Robot-Era project is to develop, implement and demonstrate the general feasibility, S/T effectiveness and social/legal plausibility and acceptability by end-users of a plurality of complete advanced robotic services, integrated in intelligent environments, which will actively work in real conditions and cooperate with real people and between them to provide favorable independent living, improving the quality of life and the efficiency of care for elderly people. Why Robot-Era? How was it born? Shortly a long story
Scuola Superiore Sant Anna & Peccioli Story ( ) Phase I Phase II Phase III The Peccioli Centre of Competence A permanent infrastructure for research and testing Tele-control and supervision rooms Manipulators, mobile robots, humanoids, and other commercial robotic platforms to implement and test advanced robotic services People ready to participate in panel tests Peccioli Permanent workshop and laboratories for service robotics and AAL technologies Permanent cameras and access points infrastructure for outdoor robotic services Radio link Updated and open domotic house for indoor robotic and ehealth services Ghizzano

Rita Project (Mar 2010 Feb 2013) Study, implementation and experimentation of ICT network in Tuscany and socio-medical assistance for elderly people Involvement of real citizens on the territory Marina di Pisa San Giuliano Terme Pis a La Vettola Vicopisan o Cascin a 212 elderly people caregivers WSN for smart environments ZigBee based home automation system Wearable sensor for physiological parameters Personal localization system (GSM/GPRS/GPS) Posture assessment (Inertial Sensors) ASTROMOBILE ( ) Design, development and experimentation of ASTRO Robot Companion for ageing well and Ambient Assisted Living applications Key points: Multidisciplinary team (engineers, designers, end-users) End-users involvement in all phases End-User Centred and Co-creative Design Approach General feasibility and scientific/technical effectiveness
Experimentation in realistic settings with senior citizens (three different scenarios) ASTRO autonomously helps user in appropriate situations User needs ASTRO to carry out some daily activities Caregiver remotely uses ASTRO to assist the user Robot-Era ( ): beyond the State of the Art Acceptability and usability Real environments (and not only realistic) Investigation and management of legal, social and ethical issues in real environments Creating permanent infrastructures beyond the end of Robot-Era project User- and society- centred service robotics Services provided by the cooperation of different robots integrated in smart environments Robots as co-workers that cooperate with humans Services distributed over indoor and outdoor environments (3D service robotics)
Robot-Era Platforms Cooperating robots to take care of elderly from the street to the home! Robot-Era: first results Phase 1 End-user needs analysis Service robotic design Study of acceptability and usability Phase 2 Development of two sets of robotic systems in the two pilot sites Peccioli (IT), town oriented Orebro (SE), residence oriented
Robot-Era: first results Phase 1 End-user needs analysis Service robotic design Study of acceptability and usability Phase 1: methodology End-user needs were identified and designed with a service and user oriented approach. Refinement of the older people needs Refinement of the initial scenarios Focus groups: 4 in Italy (N=32 elderly) 2 in Germany (N=13 elderly) 1 Sweden (N= 4 elderly) Refinement of the services Development of new scenarios Focus groups & Workshops: 24 in Italy (N=12 seniors, N=12 stakeholders) 11 in Germany (N=6 seniors, N=5 professionals) Evaluation of the new scenarios Usability/Acceptability requirements analysis Interviews: 24 in Italy (N=12 seniors, N=12 stakeholders) 11 in Germany (N=6 seniors, N=5 professionals)
Home Phase 1: results Condominium Outdoor Carrying objects Reducing the domestic risk of accidents Supporting health management Remanding tasks and events Enhancing social communication and relationship Service communication to flat owner Going out for a walk Social local service information, surveillance Phase 1: results Services in the Town (distributed in the town and provided by cooperation of three robots) Home shopping service Waste collection service
Acceptability issues A new technology should be a medium for connecting and supporting the relationships and not a substitute of humans. The highest requested characteristic is the flexibility to the changing needs, and a high level of customization, directly in the context of use with the specific user. The opportunity of doing recreational activities with the robots is highly appreciated by the elderly with a higher level of education, engaged in leisure activities. The fear of being not able to use the robots or the stigmatization were considered low barriers, while having some skills in technology was highly recommended. Older people with cognitive decline was considered a not appropriate target of the platform. Technological issues The robot is not a self-standing device: it is part of a system (AmI, AAL, etc.) We are well aware and want to make best use of the new technologies being developed around us (web, domotics, tablets, skype, home entertainment, etc.) Robots have two unique capabilities vs all other web devices: mobility and manipulation. So we should exploit these capabilities as a priority A unique feature is the concept of moving objects from/to an apartment, the condominium and outdoor Importance of empathy between user and robot Additional functions (surveillance, etc.) Design, safety, cost, technical, feasibility, acceptability, stakeholders
Robot-Era: first results Phase 2 Development of two sets of robotic systems in the two pilot sites Peccioli (IT), town oriented Orebro (SE), residence oriented Phase 2: Pilot Sites Peccioli, Pisa (IT) Small ancient village A Living Lab spread over an entire small town DomoCasa Living Lab Länsgården, Orebro (SE) Residential apartments Senior with special needs and care Health center with medical service
Phase 2: experimental scenarios 1. Peccioli (indoor and outdoor) -Objects transportation and manipulation -Cleaning (windows, WC, kitchen, dusting) -Garbage collection -Drugs and shopping delivery -Walking support -Additional tasks for communication and monitoring 2. Örebro -Objects transportation and manipulation (indoor. 1 st floor apartment) -Cleaning (windows, WC, kitchen, dusting) -Laundry support and food serving (condominium, 8 th floor common area) -Additional tasks for communication and monitoring Phase 2: Robot-Era ecosystem Control Center for safety and security of Robot-Era services failure of the robot to perform operations; damages of mechanical and electrical parts of the robotic platform and AmI; general malfunctioning; difficulty of end-users to interact with Robot-Era services; possible damages for things or people; acts of vandalism; etc. autonomous mode tele-operated mode
Phase 2: Robot-Era platforms Domestic Condominium Urban Phase 2: first sketches
Concluding remarks 6 robotic platforms, fully integrated in indoor and outdoor smart environments A set of 13 robotic services 3 different scenarios (indoor, condominium, outdoor) 14 months of field trials end users involved in trials 2 validation sites, in Italy and in Sweden A competent, well integrated, interdisciplinary, committed consortium 1 full town ready to support: the Municipality and the citizens of Peccioli A unique opportunity for a EU project to accelerate the application of service robots for ageing well Future works After Robot-Era, what?
