4 Setting Science Agendas for Europe The European Science Foundation provides a common platform for its Member Organisations in order to: advance European research explore new directions for research at the European level Through its activities, the ESF serves the needs of the European research community in a global context. Its mandate is underpinned by the values of excellence, openness, responsiveness, pan-european, ethical awareness and human values. It coordinates the programmes that are funded directly by national organisations. 4

13 EUROCORES (European Collaborative Research Programmes) Unique investigator-driven collaborative research scheme covering all scientific disciplines Opportunity for scientists to submit themes for collaborative research programmes International and joint peer review Research funding remains national, coordination and networking funded through ESF One programme includes about 30 individual projects from several countries Channels 5-10 M over 3 years Currently,1500 researchers funded by 66 funding organisations with M 150 In anticipation of decisions on the future of ESF, no call for themes will be launched in

14 ECRP (European Collaborative Research Projects in the Social Sciences) Responsive-mode, investigator-driven multilateral collaborative research scheme in the social sciences Opportunities for research communities to test innovative ideas, pool expertise and strengthen research capacity International and joint peer review Research funding remains national In anticipation of decisions on the future of ESF, no call for programmes will be launched in

15 Research Networking Programmes Enable scientific endeavours over a 4-5 year period Supported by Member Organisations and other research and academic institutions Include workshops, conferences, exchange visits, summer schools, dissemination Can link to other initiatives, including the EC programmes Funding of k per year per programme participants per year in programmes In anticipation of decisions on the future of ESF, the 2010 call for proposals was cancelled 15

16 Research Conferences Interdisciplinary scheme in collaboration with institutional partners Stimulate dialogue between early-stage researchers and scientific leaders worldwide Cover topics proposed by the scientific community Grants of k per conference, including specific support for early-stage researchers Organisation by ESF conference unit 16

17 Science Management ESF serves the academic community by creating synergies between funding agencies and by assisting cross-border cooperation. Peer Review support for funding organisations Coordination of ERA-NETs and other EC projects Implementing agent for COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) through a European Commission contract 17

18 A time of change ESF has been in discussion with EUROHORCs (European Heads of Research Councils) about a possible merger of the two organisations: To create a united voice for science in Europe and a powerful driving force to lead the future of the European Research Area Although discussions of the merger of the two organisations have not yet been resolved, existing commitments will be unaffected. 19 SCSS Strategic Priorities - Overview To promote high quality social science research at the European level To bring added value to nationally funded research through European collaboration between ESF Memebr Organisations To help support innovative research ideas and approaches emanating from the scientific community To play an institutional role in strenghtening European social science research infrastructure European Strategy Forum on research Infrastructure (ESFRI) European Social Survey (ESS) 19

20 SCSS Forward Looks: 3 currently : 1) Ageing, health and pensions in Europe; 2) Central and Eastern Europe beyond Transition; 3) The future of Science in Society Exploratory workshops: annual ESF Call in March covering all scientific areas 18 workshops funded by SCSS in 2011, e.g.: Geopolitics of ideas, Nonverbal intentions etc. Research Networking programmes: currently 10 and 2 to be launched in 2011: 1) European Historical Population Sample Network; 2) Rights to Green Future EUROCORES: 2 currently: 1) Cross-national and multi-level analysis of human values, institutions, behaviour; 2) Higher education and social change + 4 ECRP Programmes Strategic activities: e.g. Youth violence; Indicators for child wellbeing etc. 20
