5 IDC: Outcomes from the Vision By the year 2020, the EU HPC strategy has enabled the following progress to occur: 1. Europe is recognised as a hotbed for new science and engineering research 2. Europe's leadership in the targeted areas has created many new jobs in science and industry, and has caused the national economies to grow faster 3. Europe is the world leader in important high-end HPC technologies Europe leads the world in scalable algorithms and software applications, and in tools to make HPC systems easy-to-use and to make researchers highly innovative and productive FLE s target 4

21 Mont-Blanc Objectives To develop an energy-efficient HPC prototype using low-power commercially available embedded technology To design a next-generation HPC system together with a range of embedded technologies in order to overcome the limitations identified in the prototype system To develop a portfolio of exascale applications to be run on this new generation of HPC systems This will produce a new type of computer architecture capable of setting future global HPC standards that will provide exascale performance using 15 to 30 times less energy 20

22 Europe: The Future European Commission has recognised the strategic importance of HPC development for innovation in Europe European leadership in the supply and use of HPC systems and services by 2020 Need to boost European HPC industry to counteract US domination Europe strong in parallel software, but strength needed across all HPC technologies Window of opportunity with development of exascale systems Energy efficiency, new programming models Build on PRACE HPC infrastructure provision Recommendations from EC are an annual budget of more than 1 billion pre-competitive procurement approach establishment of centres of excellence in application domains and codesign centres 21
