The committee encourages the SPWLA community to share both theories and applications of the emerging data-driven analytics methods as applicable to petrophysical data analysis, such as machine learning (deep learning) and artificial intelligence. We are seeking submissions on related topics including but not limited to the following areas: Interpretation and mapping of geological features Reservoir description, characterization, and modeling Seismic rock properties or rock physics modeling Well and reservoir surveillance Operational practices: data acquisition, quality control, standardization, and automation Our Policy It is the policy of this organization to provide equal opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual preference, age, or disability. 3 Proceedings are off the record to encourage sharing of the latest techniques and information. Presentations will typically be 30 minutes (including 10 minutes Q&A). Quoting and (or) recording speakers or their presentations is prohibited. Commercialism in speaker presentations will not be permitted. Company logos should be limited to the title slide only and used only to indicate the affiliation of the author and co-authors of the presentation. 4 Petrophysics Journal Special Issue Petrophysical Data-Driven Analytics: Theory and Applications Data-Driven Analytics (DDA) such as data mining, clustering, and machine learning have generated unprecedented impacts on various industries by exploring the value obtainable from streaming Big Data. DDA is also gaining momentum in many domains of the petroleum industry, particularly for the interpretation of subsurface engineering and geological data. Petrophysics, as a pivotal discipline connecting reservoir engineering and geoscience, gathers multi-scale and multi-physics Big Data, often in real time. However, routine application of DDA to subsurface data still has significant potential to grow and support many areas of petrophysical interpretation. For example, in tight and heterogeneous formations, petrophysical interpretation is replete with challenging regression and classification problems (e.g., permeability prediction and rock typing) that could be better approached by DDA. Major challenges need to be overcome before the potentially game-changing value of DDA for petrophysics can be realized. First, a robust theoretical foundation to support the application of DDA to petrophysical interpretation should be established; second, the utility of existing DDA algorithms must be evaluated and tested in different petrophysical tasks with different data scenarios; third, procedures to control the quality of data used in DDA algorithms need to be implemented and the associated uncertainties need to be appropriately addressed. The proposed Petrophysics special edition will focus on both theories and applications of the emerging DDA methods as applicable to petrophysical data analysis. We are seeking submissions on related topics including but not limited to the following areas: Interpretation and mapping of geological features Reservoir description, characterization, and modeling Seismic rock properties or rock physics modeling Well and reservoir surveillance Operational practices: data acquisition, quality control, standardization, and automation The editors of Petrophysics invite papers on the topic of Petrophysical Data-Driven Analytics: Theory and Applications for publication in a December 2018 special issue. Interested authors should first submit a 500-word abstract for editors review and approval before Feb 1, The full manuscript should be submitted no later than June 1, 2018 abstract@spwla.org. In addition, the special-issue editors would like to receive a provisional title and list of authors as soon as possible. The submitted papers will be subjected to the regular peer-review process, and the contributing authors are also expected to participate in the peer-review process. Expanded abstracts presented at conferences are also welcome as long as they are not under peer-review in another journal. The submissions will be processed according to the following timeline: Abstract submission deadline: Full manuscript submission deadline: 1 June 2018 Peer review complete: 1 Oct Feb 2018 (extension upon request)
