Energy Game Changer: Oil & Gas related projects Derek Allen, Lead Technologist, Energy OGTC Workshop, 16 May 2017
Summary 2m competition launched in May 2016 to introduce new players into the heavily regulated Energy sector To fund 100k feasibility studies, 6-12 month duration Projects could only be led by SMEs from outside the sector Targeted:- nuclear decommissioning, oil & gas and energy systems Consulted the sectors to understand some of their key challenges and then articulated them in way non-experts could understand Applicants went through a 3 stage process We funded over 40 projects (~12 relevant to O&G) all starting Jan-March 2017
Summary The Challenges 3 High level challenges defined by the sectors were distilled down to: Taking inspection to the limit Dealing with data Engaging in energy For Oil & Gas this represented Detecting Corrosion under insulation Inspection of vessels Big Data
Our objective for today To showcase the projects in front of end-users, potential customers to allow: Projects to get access to end users End users to provide input/comments on their projects at early stage Make contacts and offer potential mentoring

Introduction to 3-Sci Ltd
A hi-tech company created by 3 Scientists from commercial and defence engineering experiences Prof Mike Hinton (CEO) Mr Adrian Bowles (Tech. Director) Dr Mark Maylin (Account Director)
Corrosion Under Insulation: CUITEST The problem The innovation Our progress Approach to system implementation Help needed
Corrosion Under Insulation The Problem The steel type and temperature (time of day/seasonal/process variations) The quantity of water The electrolytic nature of the water (affected by soluble contaminants either from the insulation or from the outside environment) The size of the area of the exposed steel The frequency of wet/dry cycles Can be highly localised, or occur over larger areas = difficult to know about, = difficult and costly to detect, = difficult to understand trends and correlations or areas most likely to be at risk
CUITEST Solution Permanent monitoring over great distances CUITEST comprises ground-breaking technology for the avoidance of corrosion under insulation (CUI) in plant piping and pressure vessels. CUI worldwide costs billions of pounds each year. The 3-Sci solution utilises sparsely-distributed sensors, permanently-deployed across a plant, to monitor and report wirelessly, the conditions that cause CUI. Development is currently supported by funds from the UK government Innovation authority (IUK). As well as providing assurance to managers of offshore platforms, CUITEST will be applied also to downstream and onshore petrochemical assets.
CUITEST: Implementation Route integrate with existing wireless communication backbone always on continuous reporting back to the office Wi-Corr : extreme resolution and reproducibility: enables fast assessment of erosion/corrosion trends
CUITEST Technical Progress Attenuations of EM over tens of metres of pipe proven (detects ~100grams of water over 10s of metres) Work on vessels being examined.

CUITEST help from the sector? 1. Populate our data-gathering sheets 2. Provide historical anecdotes/knowledge 3. Offer trials opportunities (from late 2017/early 2018) with orders on success.
Mark Maylin 3-Sci Ltd CUITEST Thank you
Detection of CUI Via Distributed network of EIS Sensors Inspection Technologies Ltd
Technological Summary Fundamental Principles Uses Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) which is a well-established and proven method for the detection of corrosion The game-changing nature of this proposal is that Inspection Technologies Ltd have for the first time ever, enabled this technology to be miniaturised and be taken out of the laboratory and into industrial environments to provide distributed in-situ sensors to provide continuous 24/7 detection and location of corrosion in the entire length of systems such as distributed networks of insulated pipelines.
Technological Summary Each miniature EIS unit is a node in a distributed network of in-situ corrosion sensors. Attached to exposed metalwork outside of the insulation : valves, flanges etc. Each sensor is called a: Nodal Transducer Interface, or NTi
Technological Summary Main features NTi Unit Capable of being networked to form a SCADA ( Supervisory and Control Data Acquisition and is used across many industries ) monitoring system. Possibility to expand the functionality via adding external sensors to monitor various parameters via the NTi Temperature Humidity Gas Presence of Water in The Insulation Itself Easy for maintenance Easy to expand the system
Principle of Deployment: Pipe Systems Each segment of pipeline (straight or curved) has an NTi at either end Measures the complex AC impedance between successive strategically placed NTi units. Each NTi has a unique locational address At any one time, only 2 NTi units are activated - thus corrosion and other defects easily located and monitored
Example of the detection of CUI
Current Status: Live Telemetry from Beta Test Site, Kristiansund, Norway.
What do we need? Access to Facilities and further large-scale deployment trials. Dr Geoff Diamond, Chief Technical Officer Inspection Technological Officer. Inspection Technologies Ltd T: M: E:

Stereo-Welding: Intelligent Vision for Energy facilities Inspection and Welding (IVEIW) 16 th May 2017
What problem are we solving? End-users in the nuclear and petrochemical industries have highlighted some of the key inspection challenges facing the energy sector Current weld inspection methods are costly and require highly trained staff, who are in ever greater demand The project aims to develop a new smart inspection system based on advanced 3D vision and robotic arm technology to enable automated, efficient detection and repair of structural faults with limited human intervention. Potential for welding and other repairs may be performed 24/7. This leads to direct cost-savings due to reduced reliance on in-demand personnel as well as reduced contaminated waste production. Improve the health & safety issues for employees and security & well-being of wider community

Energy Game Changer Monitoring Nuclear waste using Raman IS-Instruments and AMEC Foster Wheeler 16 th May 2017
Problem? Challenge - Identification of Iron Oxide Rust Radioactive material is commonly stored in steel containers, tanks or silos for many decades Long term integrity of containers often unknown due to limited monitoring Currently investigations are conducted by a skilled engineer Key industry risks Heathy & Safety of employees and well-being & security of wider community (both key societal issues) Need identified by the industry (call) & AMEC who have investigated using Raman but need a tailored solution
Innovation Develop a robotic system based on Raman spectroscopy for detecting corrosion in waste storage containers for use in the nuclear industry The project will focus on adapting / improving ISI s existing high throughput spectrometers that can operate in harsh environments (radiation levels etc.) and make observations from a distance up to 3 m USP: Detection of chemical changes to containers could indicate early detection of degradation or corrosion. Use of autonomous methods for this type of task is a key aspiration of the industry The Team: ISI Technology Developer and Project Lead Design & build spectrometers. AMEC Foster Wheeler Identified demand for instrument Major global contractor to nuclear and petro-chemicals industries
