2 Introduction Spectrum Chromatography manufactures a variety of syringes for laboratory use. The Gas/Liquid syringes range in volume from 500 µl to 100 ml. Each syringe s Teflon plunger provides a gas- and liquid-tight seal. The syringes are available with either fixed (cemented) needles or with removable, screwhub needles. In addition, syringes are available with either conventional, constant-tension plungers or with adjustable-tensions plungers. 2 Conventional Gas/Liquid Syringes Ideally suited for handling almost any gas or liquid Fixed and interchangeable needle models available Interchangeable plungers with constant-tension seal The Spectrum conventional Gas/Liquid syringes offer the same high degree of resistance to chemical attack as the adjustable plunger seal Gas/Liquid syringes; only borosilicate glass and Teflon are wetted by the fluid. The plunger in these syringes has a flat face which contacts the flat bottom of the barrel assuring that all of the fluid is displaced from the syringe. The barrels and plungers of these syringes are interchangeable within a given size. This allows replacements barrels to be readily obtained in the event of accidental breakage. While these syringes are leak-free to in excess of 30 psig, we do not recommend using them at high pressures. At high pressures the plunger may be accidentally ejected from the barrel creating a hazard. D10122 Gas/Liquid Syringes

3 Adjustable Plunger Seal Gas/Liquid Syringes Ideally suited for handling almost any gas or liquid Fixed and interchangeable needle models available Interchangeable plungers with adjustabletension seal The Spectrum adjustable plunger seal Gas/Liquid syringes offer the highest degree of resistance to chemical attack. Only borosilicate glass and Teflon are wetted by the fluid. The unique adjustable plunger seal features an expanding Teflon seal at the plunger face. The two concentric parts of the plunger shaft may be rotated to expand the Teflon O-rings, ensuring the maintenance of the leak-proof seal. The figure below illustrates the direction in which the two knobs should be turned to tighten the seal. Turning them in the opposite manner will loosen the seal by allowing the O-ring to contract. These syringes, when properly used, are leak-free to in excess of 50 psig. However, using these syringes at high pressures in no recommended; the plunger may become difficult to control and may be launched from the barrel creating a hazard. vc Tightening the Syringe Plunger D10122 Gas/Liquid Syringes 3

Syringe Replacement Parts Replacement plungers and barrels are available for the full line of Gas/Liquid syringes. The same barrels are used both the conventional and the adjustable plunger seal syringes. Replacement barrels with either a threaded tip for use with a removable screw-hub needle or with a fixed 2 x #22 needle are available. Replacement barrels with a 3 x #22 needle are available by special order only. The same plungers are used with both the removable screw-hub needle barrels and the cemented needle barrels. Replacement conventional, as well as adjustable plunger seal, plungers are available. Both flat end (90 ) and sharp (22 ) removable screw-hub needles are available as replacement parts. They are available with a #22 outside diameter (0.028 ), and two different inside diameters, and These needles are supplied with the Teflon sealing washer but not the screw hub nut. Additional screw hub nuts, if required, must be ordered separately. The Teflon seals used in the connection made at the end of the syringe are supplied with each needle and accessory. 5 Gas/Liquid Syringe Accessories Spectrum Chromatography offers a variety of accessories which can be used with the removable needle Gas/Liquid syringes. Gas/Liquid syringes may be used with standard Luer hub needles with the aid of the Luer adapter. The adapter screws onto the 1/4-28 threads on the end of the screw-hub Gas/Liquid syringes. It provides a standard male Luer-Lock fitting for use with needles and other Luer-compatible devices. The wetted surfaces in this adapter include Kel-F and chromium plate. Luer-hubbed needles are available from Spectrum Chromatography for use with this adapter. Two different shut-off valves are available for the Gas/Liquid syringes. These may be used for positive fluid control. By filling the syringe and then closing the valve one can be sure that no leakage will occur prior to the desired release of the syringe contents. These valves are constructed entirely of Kel-F and Teflon. They have 1/4-28 threads on both their inlet and outlet so that they will accommodate any accessory or needle which would fit the syringe. When open, the valves have a straight, clear flow-path for minimum dead volume. These valves are able to withstand 200 psig without leakage. For a more permanent syringe seal, a screw-on closure is available for the Gas/Liquid syringes. This Kel-F device screws onto the end of the syringe to seal it. It may also be used in conjunction with a shut-off valve to allow for the ready storage of material in syringes. Fittings for connecting tubing directly to the threads on the end of the Gas/Liquid syringes are available. The flare-tube coupling is designed to mate with most 1/4-28 flare-tube or flangeless fittings which require a flatbottomed receptacle. These include Cheminert and Omnifit fittings. 6 Syringe Guard Station The Syringe Guard Station allows you to store your syringes in a convenient and organized manner. The Spectra/Chrom Syringe Guard Station puts all of those misplaced syringes at your fingertips. No more syringe breakage or loss. Each Syringe Guard Station holds up to ten syringes.
