7 PhD in DESIGN - 34th cycle Research Field: EMPOWERING EVIDENCE-BASED POLICY DESIGN APPROACHES FOR CITY GOVERNANCE. INTEGRATING A DESIGN FOR POLICY PERSPECTIVE WITH OPEN AND BIG DATA PROCESSING AND VISUALIZATION Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Interdisciplinary PhD Grant The PhD research will be carried out in collaboration with research groups of the PhD programme in "URBAN PLANNING, DESIGN, AND POLICY". See for further information. Motivation and objectives of the research in this field There is no doubt that design has increasingly acquired recognition There is a growing interest in applying design methods and approaches to policy-making that is the most recent element in the debate stemmed from the acknowledgment of the potentialities of design tools for improving government efficiency at many levels. In particular, policy has always been conceived as a provider of solutions to significant societal problems; however, it belongs to an old model of imagining policy, where societal issues were clear and well understood. In the current context, socio-economic challenges are dynamic, systemic, and interconnected, thus resisting a straightforward adaptation of the past methods used to take and implement governmental decisions. Policy can no longer be seen and made by and for themselves. As a situated practice, it can only make sense if strictly linked to understanding issues in context and connection with a practical outlook and consequences. Further, the assumption of a linear policy cycle needs to be challenged at its core, questioning how and when to gather the evidence necessary for resource allocation, as well as 1 / 5
8 framing the type required. Emerging practices show the construction of a structured approach that allows the integration and use of the vast amount of data available at the individual, collective and environmental scale. The proposed research aims at building a robust phenomenology of the connection between evidencebased policy-making processes, new data harvesting, processing and visualizing approaches, and citizen-centric governance models for the cities. The research scope is to build a theoretical framework capable of focusing the understanding of the complex interdependency between data-driven scenarios and policy making perspectives and practices through the use of data gathering, interpretation and visualization, and to develop new ways to handle the complexity of growing societal challenges. The intent is to define a path of action-research that can robustly test approaches and methods of design in this area. The general objective is the development of a theoretical and pragmatic insight able to connect data, design, and policy-making which could be explored through a series of further goals: - the development of a design methodology for the development of evidence-based policy based upon the use of data; - the field test and development of design tools and approaches to actively support complex and dynamic governance models; - the setup and development of an Open Data-Based Policy Lab, with its core approaches, tools, activities. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research We're interested in analyzing the research area from a phenomenological perspective searching for: - all the experiences that have already implemented real solutions and processes for civic transformation through the development of relevant and highly innovative Public Innovation Spaces (policy labs, urban innovation hubs...); - Digital Social Innovation cases (tools, platforms, experiences...) which adopt the use of techniques and methodologies attributable to the field of co-design and service design (digital ethnography, service prototyping, 2 / 5
9 cultural probes...) also having a special attention to the integration of data visualization, analysis, and mapping. We are also interested in framing a scientific and methodological approach to the use of quantitative and qualitative data in model representation and socioeconomic decision making processes. Educational objectives The Candidate will acquire the knowledge and the ability (theoretical, operational, critical) necessary to make an in depth inquiry of the research area described above and address the main issues raised by this challenging disciplinary transformation. We imagine to build a multidisciplinary set of abilities which could mix different research fields (design for policy, data science and visualization, community development for urban govenrance, media and communication design, policy making for urban innovation.) Job opportunities The future PhD Candidate could acquire a set of capabilities which could be interesting for different career perspectives.first of all in the Academic field (teaching, research, consultancy) but also in the private area, working as a researcher/consultant in large consultancy agencies, enterprises, public or private institutions. Moreover, he/she could even imagine to use the acquired competencies for founding and developing new start-up enterprises based on innovative processes, technologies and services (created for the thesis). 12 PhD in DESIGN - 34th cycle Research Field: EXPERIENCING AUGMENTED SCULPTURES IN MUSEUM NARRATIVES. A METADATA-CENTERED WORKFLOW FOR INTERACTING WITH DIFFERENT LAYERS OF LOCATION-BASED INFORMATION AND NARRATIVES THROUGH AUGMENTED REALITY Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Interdisciplinary PhD Grant The PhD research will be carried out in collaboration with research groups of the PhD programme in "MECHANICAL ENGINEERING". See for further information. Motivation and objectives of the research in this field The work lies in the area of design of innovative museum experiences and interactions based on 3D digital technologies. The study will cover the touristic and technical use of massive sets of 3D digital models of sculptures, belonging to the Uffizi Museum in Florence, which is already the subject of research by the Computer Vision & Reverse Engineering group of DMEC leaded by G. Guidi. Such group is contributing to the digitization of the sculptural heritage owned by the Uffizi galleries as part of an international project coordinated by the Indiana University (USA).The massive three-dimensional (3D) digitization of museums contents, with a particular focus on sculptures, is increasingly widespread. In the past few years, many advancements have been made, which have led to the creation of 3D repositories of entire collections and related metadata, including possible annotations on the surface of a 3D model. Currently, digital collections are containing both the information related to the visualization of a sculptural asset (the textured 3D model) and its historical interpretation (the metadatadata associated with it). Thanks to 3D annotation techniques, a 1 / 4
13 data component can be associated to specific locations on the model, such as the description of defects or restorations over a sculpture, or to entire areas of the surface explored with instrumental analyses of residual pigments, such as the reconstruction of the original color content. All of this information is currently disconnected from the usage phase, both for the specialists (the conservator, the restorer or the scholar) and for the visitors. Both of these categories could be related to this information through different narration levels by using advanced visualization techniques such as Augmented Reality (AR). The objective of the research is to study innovative approaches to a cultural experience to enrich and differentiate the museum visits. It will specifically investigate and develop various possibilities offered by AR to merge visual content with different types of information regarding both content (technical, historical, artistic, etc.) and format (3D, 2D, text, audio, etc.). Different methods of output and input in AR will be considered. The case study for this work will be the Uffizi Museum in Florence. In addition to a series of specific case studies to be defined, the first set of models and data is already available and will allow to verify and structure the application also on the basis of the feedback from the museum managers and the visitors. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research i) User experience design for the use of data which are not readily tellable by traditional techniques, through a better visualization with information components provided to and by the user in AR; ii) 3D acquisition of assets with photogrammetric techniques and laser scanning, and post-processing of the 3D models in forms suitable to implement the application; iii) Creation of information systems connected to the sculptural asset using the 3D model as an access portal; iv) Digital Curation. Educational objectives - to develop an original theme of research, becoming an effective member of a research team; - to improve high-level specialist skills concerning the topic and field of the research as well as acquire 2 / 4
14 knowledge and tools for the development of innovative results; - to increase and consolidate the network of international relationships related to the field of the research. 16 PhD in DESIGN - 34th cycle Research Field: SOCIAL MEDIA, INFORMATION DESIGN, DATA VISUALIZATION Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Motivation and objectives of the research in this field On the Web, we can follow opinions, ideas, and feelings of hundreds of millions of people. We can also study exact trajectories formed by billions of cultural expressions, experiences, texts, and links (Latour, 2007). We can see the images and the videos users create and comment on, monitor the conversations they are engaged in, read their blog posts and tweets, navigate their maps, listen to their track lists, and follow their trajectories in physical space (Manovich, 2011; Boyd & Crawford, 2011). Furthermore, thanks to its neutrality and connectivity, the Web offers a unique space for discussing and constructing issues. Not only all sorts of actors can easily express their viewpoints, but the hypertextual texture of the Web facilitates the emergence of alliances and oppositions (Rogers, 2002). The design of interfaces to access, observe and explore these new social and cultural data emerges as a central issue in current research initiatives and agendas. Furthermore, social sciences and humanities, provide an almost-perfect context for design and design thinking (especially communication and interface design) to apply and study their situated, interpretative and user-centered approaches. However, despite this premises, the design community appears today barely involved and poorly interested in the discussion. Communication Design offers important cognitive tools for reasoning and understanding within digital environments. Besides pragmatic visualizations - meant to support research and scientific reasoning - and artistic visualization - meant to be interpretive and expressive (Viégas 2007) - we are increasingly confronted with speculative visualizations (Tanyoung and DiSalvo 2010). Speculative visualizations 1 / 3
17 present socially and politically meaningful data to provoke viewers' interpretation, to elicit discussions, to envisage possible futures: their ultimate goal is to promote public engagement in social and political issues. For these reasons, a growing number of social (Scagnetti, Ricci, Baule and Ciuccarelli 2007; Ricci 2010) and humanities (Drucker 2010) research include visualization as a prominent topic in their activities and projects.the research aims at:- defining new design methods and practices to support humanities and social science research, based on the study of digital environments and data;- understanding roles, opportunities and perspectives for communication design within the current and future scenarios emerging from the intersections between social and humanities studies and digital technologies;- establishing new collaborations between design and the disciplinary contexts involved in the research, in particular Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science;- experimenting and evaluating through the design practice and the development of new solutions the impact of visual explorative interfaces in the research processes of Humanities and Social Sciences. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research The research will be developed through differed methods and techniques, among which: Literature review, case study, design research methods, experimental design workshop. Educational objectives The research will be developed through differed methods and techniques, among which: Literature review, case study, design research methods, experimental design workshop. Job opportunities The candidate will find opportunities in the domain of media and publishers (news industry), research organizations focusing on digital humanities and computational sociology. 21 PhD in DESIGN - 34th cycle Research Field: SUSTAINING RELEVANCE / SUPPORTING SIGNIFICANCE _ RESPECTING THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF PEOPLE, PLACES, AND THINGS Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Preservation cannot only exist in the "mummification" of the thing...of its abstraction and distancing from real life and real time. "Preservation" cannot always be a simple "saving" or a precious "preserving" of a thing. Our heritage and traditions must not only retain presence, but significance and relevance. Liberal and progressive minds, processes, and regulations are needed to foster a culture of innovation, relevance and resilience as we steward our world, inclusive of our cultural heritage. We need minds and regulations that will allow current and future architects, artists, and designers to contribute, and to have their voices heard, and their work realized. Both a narrow and conservative environment, or an open and progressive culture, establish attitudes and rules for working with the past that will ripple and resonate beyond itself, and will also inform how we act and create in other realms. There is a real spin-off effect, and hence even greater consequences beyond the creative individual or generation. If we are not careful and attentive, society and culture at large may be negatively affected; and in fact, a vibrant, relevant, and resilient cultural heritage may be unintentionally hampered too. Along with the past, the present and future may hold incredible significance and importance. In terms of Italy, and other parts of the world when appropriate, as Italy holds the primary attention in this work: 1 / 3
22 A survey, including significant case studies, of past attitudes and approaches to (cultural) heritage, historical sites, and preservation in general, and also specifically in terms of adaptations, interventions, reuse, and modification over time and place. An overview of (principle) contemporary/current rules and regulations in preservation and adaptation. Strategies, processes and practices in adaptations, reuse, interventions and modifications. A survey of significant towns/cities/places that have declined, shrunk, or disappeared. Strategies, processes and practices countering the erosion, decline or disappearance of towns/cities/places. This PhD Research work will likely manifest in three areas: _ academic publications/presentations, _ popular publications/presentations, and _ professional publications /presentations...in this last case possibly as also a set of published guidelines establishing or influencing professional, institutional and governmental processes. This work is intended to impact conversations and decisions in the present and future, to affect positive and progressive change as needed, and to open possibilities for broader review and acceptance of contemporary work as a sort of best practices resource and reasonable guidelines towards processes and implementation, as well as assembling and advancing the general sense of the topic. Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research Educational objectives Primary, secondary, and tertiary text-based research, case studies, site visits and analysis, interviews, etc. Increasing and expanding awareness, understanding and ability towards various issues and actions surrounding cultural heritage and creative work. 2 / 3
