Compare treatment planning codes with the Monte Carlo codes, GEANT4 and Shield-Hit Educational background: Computing, Medical Physics or Applied Physics Function: To compare treatment planning codes with the Monte Carlo codes, GEANT4 and Shield Hit Contract duration: 36 months Application deadline: 15 September 2008 Approximate contract start: 1 November 2008 Associate partners: Karolinska Institutet, Sweden The objective is to compare the treatment planning and dosimetry at HIT/ Heidelberg, Germany, at CNAO/ Pavia, Italy and at the other emerging centres such as MedAustron, Etoile, in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe with the existing MC codes, GEANT4, and SHIELD HIT. A very large effort has been devoted in particle physics and medicine to understand the passage, the interactions and break ups of hadrons, protons, and different ion species and their energy deposition in the different materials of the human body. Further effort has been directed towards the biological effects of such energy depositions in living cells. Even though there has been some development for using these codes and the measurements of biomedical effects in hadron therapy, it will be necessary to collate this information, to compare it with a comprehensive set of documented requirements for treatment purposes and to analyse the treatment planning and dosimetry packages accordingly. These requirements have to be obtained from CNAO, HIT and the other partners, including industry. The researcher will advance towards comprehensive Monte Carlo reference codes for hadron therapy in a clinical environment through the following: describe and compare the actual performance of existing Monte Carlo Simulation codes of different ion species for the hadron therapy use case and describe their relevance for biomedical effects, treatment planning and dosimetry; in particular, simulate for different ion species (O16, N14, C12, Be8, Li7 He4) and their isotopes the creation and capture of neutrons from nuclear reactions or other break ups of the incoming i beam particles il interacting i with ihbody tissue and to trace them and other reaction partners through the body using the most appropriate MC codes; develop basic data generation tools and benchmarking of algorithms used to generate treatments plans in a patient model against Monte Carlo, based on what has been done for actual hadron therapy treatments; a good knowledge of scientific programming and the underlying physics of particle transport in matter. 16 Oct Partner; H F Hoffmann, CERN 7

Establish a prototype, collaborative grid environment and gridenabled applications around the emerging hadron therapy centres Educational background: Medical Physics, Physics or Computing Function: To establish a prototype, collaborative grid environment and grid enabled applications around the emerging hadron therapy centres in Europe Contract duration: 36 months Application deadline: 15 September 2008 Approximate contract start: 1 November 2008 Associate partners: IFIC, Hospital Universitari LA FE/Valencia, ESR Oxford University These positions offer optimal training conditions for IT engineers and medical professionals who are especially interested in telemedicine. Based on : the experience accumulated particularly in Spain and the UK, and by other entities in the Partner consortium on sharing medical data and applications across different hospitals and medical institutions not overed by the other ESR; the particular efforts and experience of the UK and corresponding applications in the UK e science initiative; and initial steps to connect the ETOILE, Heidelberg, MedAustron and CNAO and other emerging Hadrontherapy Research Groups and to build up an infrastructure for clinical studies, In terms of the existing EU FP7 EGEE grid infrastructure already used for numerous other medical and scientific purposes, the ESR will propose modifications to the existing elements to make them operational on the EGEE grid infrastructure, demonstrating the added valueofthis infrastructure forthe required clinical needs. Establishment of a rare tumour database prototype Educational background: Medicine, Medical Physics, Medical Computing or Information & Communication Technologies Function: Establishment of a rare tumour database prototype Contractduration: 36 months Application deadline: 15 September 2008 Approximate contract start: 1 November 2008 Associate partners: Medical University Vienna, MedAustron The objective is to compile a comprehensive set of requirements and practices concerning hadron therapy tumour treatment data and follow up with a view to creating a prototype common database and database services throughout the PARTNER network to facilitate the analysis of best practices and to provide for the necessary statistics treating rare tumours. An important part of the work will be to identify the common set of rules to allow the use for scientific analysis of the medical data respecting the national and European rules protecting patient data. A dual approach will be establishing the medical needs with the medical Partners and developing the data base, its services and security with the technology providers. This will include: analysis report of existing databases of tumors; compiling an inventory of existing databases in close collaboration with members of the PARTNER consortium (UK, Valencia, Karolinska); extracting relevant clinical/biological data and analysis of these data with the purpose of testing/developing models to enable prediction of outcome and indications for ion therapy This position requires studies in medicine with a good basic knowledge of programming, medical physics and familiarity with information and communication technologies tools. 16 Oct Partner; H F Hoffmann, CERN 11
