University Space Program in Peru. Nano-Satellite Chasqui Project, Russian Project RadioSkaf 3, CanSat of South America Glen D. Rodriguez R.
Where are we located? Machu Picchu Lima Peru Cuzco National University of Engineering (UNI) Center for information technology and communication (CTIC-UNI) National institute for research and training in telecommunications (INICTEL-UNI)
Peru is not strange to the space exploration: Ancient Peruvians were great astronomers Cusco: Constellation of the puma (Gemini)
A pioneer of space age: Peruvian scientist Pedro Paulet. In 1895, he was the first person to build a liquid-fuel rocket engine and, in 1900, the first person to build a modern rocket propulsion system. Paulet is considered one of the fathers of aeronautics. Wernher von Braun, in his book World History of Aeronautics states: Pedro Paulet was in Paris in those years (1900), experimenting with his tiny two-and-a-half kilogram motor, and achieved 100 kg of force. By this act, Paulet should be considered the pioneer of the liquid fuel propulsion motor. (sorry Goddard, Oberth). Further, in his History of Rocketry and Space Travel, von Braun recognizes that by his efforts, Paulet helped man reach the Moon. Max Valier in his book Raketenfahrt acknowledged that Paulet made the first liquid propellant rocket.
Since 2009, UNI s Educational Project RESEARCH IN SPACE TECHNOLOGY Main Objectives Training aerospace specialists to help and support national organization responsible of implementing aerospace development policies. Promoting research, technological development and innovation through leading new research fields, such as aerospace technology, to help Peru s scientific and technological development.
Available Resources Two full equipped ground stations VHF/UHF. Laboratory for solar cells and battery characterizations. Electronic workshop. Vacuum laboratory with gold sputtering equipment. Vacuum-temperature controlled chamber. Laboratory for instrumentation (thermal, magnetic, optical, electrical)

What we have achieved Component 1: Satellite design construction and operation 1. Nanosatellite Chasqui-I: manufacturing and testing. From an academic point of view the nanosatellite Chaqui I is a tool that facilitates cooperation between UNI s various faculties and research centers, trains students and professors with real world experiences in satellites. Nano-satellite laboratory prototype is 95% finished, design and construction made entirely at UNI by our students and docents.
Characteristics: Dimensions: 100mmx100mmx100mm Payload: Visible and NIR cameras Orbit: Leo 600Km weight: 1kg Communication frequency: MHz Speed communication: 1200bps Communication time: 5 min. Battery: Li-ion Mission time: 2-4 months

RadioScaf 2 or ARISSat 1 tracking and telemetry reception using our ground stations (with direction of South-West State University of Russia - SWSUR) 2. Component: Perform Scientific experiments in Space. Identification, formulation, organization and/or execution of technical/scientific space experiments, with the purpose of encouraging research and development in areas of interest. Cultivating potatoes at the ISS experiment Joint work with SWSUR, the missions main objective is to cultivate Peruvians potatoes in space at zero-gravity conditions in the International Space Station.
3. Component: Organization and participation in scientific and academic events
4. Component: Satellite information system and conference center
5. Component: Training of Aerospace Specialist (starting) Demonstrations and seminars For high school students (CANSAT project)
Proposal: Design and implementation of a: Network of small student satellites(*). Network of ground stations (*). Objective: Monitoring of water pollution (*). Monitoring of seismic activity. (*) The Chasqui team, Global water pollution monitoring using a nanosatellite constellation (WAPOSAT), AXEL SPACE Mission Idea contest.
JAPANESE EXPERIENCE - CANSAT LEADER TRAINING PROGRAM The first Cansat Leader Training Program (CLTP1) was held on February and March 2011 in Wakayama University. This program provided hands-on experiences and teaching in Cansat engineering models. The leaders of this program were Professor Hiroaki Akiyama and Shusaku Yamaura who trained twelve participants from different countries (Algeria, Australia, Egypt, Guatemala, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Vietnam). The Peruvian representative was Mr. Fredy Arturo Calle Bustinza.
CANSAT PERU FIRST STEPS IN THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING The first step was to mimic Cansat Leader Training Program, by developing the firs Peruvian CANSAT, made by members of the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería. This first step validated Japanese experience in Peru, serving as the project s foundation.
Cansat Experiences - High School Tereza Gonzales de Fanning
In year 2009, UNI signed an cooperation agreement with Kursk State Technical University (today is: South-West State University of Russia - SWSUR), which have a extensive experience in satellite and aerospace technology. In December 2010, we signed an specific agreement for the design, implementation and launch of a microsatellite (15 kg), RadioSkaf 3, to be developed for both partners in cooperation. This year we started with the design phase and we expect a complete flight prototype on Thanks to our partnership, we have received the visit of SWSUR professors, Russian cosmonauts and radio links with the ISS.
RadioSkaf 3 mission: scientific research, specially the study of density variations of the particles flux, the ionization in space, and the detection of low frequency atmospheric noise. Power Supply Unit SDX Command decoder Microprocessorbased Control system Imaging unit Atmospheric noise experiment SPI-1 I2C-1 RS485 Parallel Experiment Experiment Video capture CPLD Attitude and Control system Navigation and global positioning RUSSIA PERU SDRAM
Control System: consists of 32 bits microprocessor (PIC32MX795F512L), 3 memory bank, electric surge protection circuit, an external WatchDog, and Real Time Clock-RTC. It will include CRC functionality, Hamming based error detection and correction. Imaging Unit: in charge of image data compression and channel codification. It will have 6 CMOS based digital cameras, resolution of 640x480, one per each side of the satellite; a 32 bits microprocessor and a FPGA. Radio (software defined transponder): undecided, under study. UHF. Low frequency noise detection experiment: to detect EM pulses (whistlers) created by electric storms and Aurora Borealis in the band up to 20 khz. This data will be send to ground station as audio (ADPCM), and we will use a microcontroller MSP430.
