2 New Graduate Program DOCTORATE IN GLOBAL HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY AT THE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SÃO PAULO Start in 2013
3 GLOBAL HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY Relevance of interdisciplinary academic programs and research groups Diversity of investigations and need of broader analysis of complex health issues of contemporary societies Decision to create a third graduate interdisciplinary program
4 GLOBAL HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY Program proposed in basic area INTERDISCIPLINAR of CAPES (Ministry of Education), in sub area SAÚDE e BIOLÓGICAS In Brazil, there is no graduate program in doctorate level in the field of study of Global Health and Sustainability registered in the CAPES system.
5 GLOBAL HEALTH Many health issues surpass national frontiers, they are global by their nature, and can only be solved by global agreements, involving interdisciplinary knowledge and education. Each country and national governments are responsible for health care, but social, economic and environmental determinants of health are increasingly supranational.
6 GLOBAL HEALTH Global Health refers to the international impacts of globalization on social and economic determinants of health and consequent problems, beyond control of nations. Focus on infectious diseases expands to other health issues as trans boundary pollution, global climatic changes, bioterrorism menaces, increase of commercial processes, of health products and services, migration of health professionals, mobility of health consumers, obesity and unhealthy nutritional and food patterns, smoking, alcohol and drug use. Also concern on increase of chronic diseases as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, that have as important determinants health styles acquired in globalization process
7 GLOBAL HEALTH Field of study and practice of health themes that surpass national boundaries, and can be influenced by experiences and circumstances in other countries. Aims to know, interpreter, understand and face the consequences of globalization in the health sector and in the health determinants, in order to improve health conditions and equity for all persons.
8 SUSTAINABILITY Focus on the three independent pillars of Global Sustainable Development : economic development, social development and environmental protection. Plan for the following actions: poverty eradication, change to sustainable patterns of production and consumption, protection and management of natural resources that are the basis of social and economic development, sustainable development in a globalized world, and promotion of actions to conciliate global health issues and sustainable development.
9 CONCENTRATION: GLOBAL HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY Description: Study of dimensions and investigation fields of Global Health and Sustainability that surpass national boundaries, and are influenced by experiences and circumstances in other countries and need global action and agreements for their solution.
10 Research line 1: POLICIES, SYSTEMS AND INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS OF GLOBAL HEALTH AND SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT. Description: Aims to understand and analyze the dynamics of economic globalization polities, international systems and institutions related to health and to sustainable development, with emphasis in the new functions of the State in contemporary societies, in international relations and agreements, in the transformations of demographic profiles, in emerging, re emerging and chronicle diseases and in health, sanitary, nutritional, food and environmental safety.
11 Project 1: Sanitary, nutritional, food and environmental safety Description: Aims to investigate global issues related to Sanitary, nutritional, food and environmental safety, with emphasis on the themes: Demographic transitions and emerging, re emerging and chronic diseases; international regulations; technological innovations; data banks and local and global implications; contamination and risks in the production processes.
12 Project 2: Functions of the State, policies, health and environment international institutions and systems Description: Aims to investigate global issues related to international policies, institutions and systems with emphasis on the following themes: Functions of the State and of international systems for social and health protection; International relations, negotiations and conflicts of interest; national and international systems of Human Rights; Diplomacy and international cooperation; and transnational social movements.
13 Research line 2: SUSTAINABILITY, HUMAN MIGRATIONS AND LIFE STYLES IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES Description: Aims to analyze and understand issues related to nature and society, to technological innovations and to culture of sustainability. Also to investigate social movements, identities, migrations, human mobility and lifestyles in present days.
14 Project 3: Sustainability and technological innovation Description: Aims to analyze the dynamics of political, social and technological processes related to a culture of sustainability, with emphasis on economic development, on production processes and management of clean technologies, waste management, transport, mobility and health impacts.
15 Project 4: Mobility, human displacements and lifestyles Description: Aims to study human experience, exploring the diversity of senses and meanings that emerge in every day life, with emphasis on human mobility and on life conditions; in suffering and social risks; in symbolic representations of collective life; in multiculturalism; in social networks; in the construction of identities; in consumption patterns; and in subjectivities.
