13 Appendix A: Full Student Spotlight Olivia Glotfelty Majors: Anthropology & Russian Minor: Art History I came to UF knowing that I wanted to be an Anthropology major, but that was about it. Being in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which encourages taking classes in diverse subject-matter to establish a well-rounded education, helped me find my niche at UF, as well as my future career path. Coming to UF, anthropology as my major just made sense. It was a wide-ranging discipline, encompassing studying different people, languages, social theories, and hard sciences. I knew how applicable anthropology was, especially when considering jobs after graduation. I like the flexibility of the subject, and graduating with an anthropology degree will allow me to consider a plethora of different options after graduation. My anthropology classes helped lead me to my chosen career path in medicine, putting me on the difficult, but rewarding prehealth track. Focusing on forensic anthropology in my first year, I took a class on human bone identification, which prompted me to consider medicine as a career option. This illustrates my point about anthropology being a diverse major-- the classes you take can lead you anywhere, and are practically applicable to everything. I m about to start the application process for medical schools, and all of the schools are increasingly focused on accepting students with a strong humanities background, as they are culturally aware and have a well-rounded liberal arts education allowing them to offer a more holistic medical experience. As part of my major, I had to complete a foreign language requirement. I decided to take Russian, as it was language that I had always wanted to learn, but was not taught where I went to high school. I absolutely fell in love with the language and culture during my first semester of classes, and really liked the small size of the classes and department, which has let me to get to know my professors and fellow peers extremely well. Adding Russian as my second major has allowed me to focus my anthropology studies on a specific culture, and has made me a more knowledgeable global citizen. I chose Russian as my second major because it complimented my primary major, but it was also something that I really enjoyed studying.

14 Appendix A cont d Learning Russian also allowed me to study abroad in Moscow over the past summer. I can t adequately express how much I recommend studying abroad some time during your college career, as it will completely change you (in a good way). Going to Moscow for a summer semester not only helped me rapidly improve my Russian language skills, but also helped me learn how to interact in foreign situations and with people of a different culture. Picking Russia as my location to study abroad stemmed from my wanting to learn Russia in a native environment, but also to better understand Russian culture and how to apply it to what I had been learning in my other college classes. Studying abroad in such an unconventional location also helps me stand out among my peers, and is a conversation point on my resume. As if two majors wasn t enough, I decided to add a History of Art minor to my degrees. This decision was purely for my personal enjoyment, which is something that I needed to counteract the rigorous science classes I was taking on the pre-health track. What in the world are you going to do with this odd conglomerate of degrees, you might ask? Thanks to all of the classes I ve taken in my respective majors and minors, I found my passion for, and niche in, medicine. My various majors and minors have provided me with the skills necessary to apply to medical school, where I hope to eventually work as a team physician for a hockey team. In any case, my CLAS degrees allow me to bring a unique perspective to whatever field I end up working in.

15 Appendix B: Full Student Spotlight Sofia Shepard Majors: Mathematics and Spanish I am a mathematics and Spanish double major. The summer between my freshman and sophomore year, I got a civil engineering internship in Hurley, New Mexico at a copper mine. The company was a Forbes Top 100 company, Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold. I was worried because I had zero engineering experience or knowledge - I had never even had to take college-level science classes! But my computational skills were really all I needed, as well as the ability to learn quickly and take direction. I learned how to use AutoCAD Civil D, GPS Trimble equipment, piezometers to measure water levels in 100+ foot pipes, among other tools. I learned how to plot survey points and use them to create topographies on the computer, to write scopes and lead professional contractors in bid walks, to survey dams for failing infrastructure and to help a multimillion dollar company function on a day-to-day level. I was exposed to the tasks of the Geology Department, the Surveying Department, the Project Engineering Department, the Mining Engineering Department and many other areas outside of my comfort zone. I even got to push the button that sets off explosives arranged in an the area the size of a football field! The experience taught me that situational learning can be just as valuable (if not more) as classroom experience, but mostly I learned that it doesn't matter what you major in. I felt that I even did better than the other intern, who actually WAS an engineering major! Because of the positive relationships I formed with the company, I was able to go back the following summer and work in the Environmental Engineering Department. It taught me that even with majors as broad as mine, I really am qualified to do anything that I desire.
