Ruth Moyer Elementary Third Grade Service Learning Project Composting for Our Community C
Who is participating? *School Mrs. Graves class Mrs. Kendall s class Mrs. McGraw s class Families Moyer s cafeteria *Community City of Fort Thomas C
What is Service Learning? Service learning is teaching and learning methods that connect meaningful community service experiences with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility. C
What are we doing? We are helping the environment by collecting yard plants, leaves, small twigs, fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds from our homes to reduce the amount of garbage we send to our landfills. D
What are we doing? We take these materials to a fenced in area that the City of Fort Thomas constructed behind our school. D
What are we doing? Our classes take turns putting the compost material in the pile, and we rake it to mix it up. D
How does this relate to what we are learning? In the beginning of the year, we studied plants and their needs. We also studied soil and the need to conserve soil. This led us to our study of conservation of our environment. We took what we learned and decided to make a compost pile for a service learning project. P
How we started? We invited Doris Meece, a horticulture technician from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture Extension office to visit our school. She talked to us about how to start a compost pile. P
How we started? She explained what a compost pile needs. air water heat P
How we started? She also told us what not to put in our pile. Dairy Products Meat or Bones P
How we maintain it? When classes take out the compost material to the pile, we: make sure to spread out the scraps we put on it. use rakes to move the material around. control the water and heat by raking it. C
How will we use it? We will take the soil, rich in nutrients, and make our school s flower beds and flower pots better. We will give some to the city to use in the parks. C
Here s what we ve learned and how we ve used it Students made models of a compost pile P
Here s what we ve learned and how we ve used it Once we dump our materials, we rake the pile to control the moisture and to help the decomposition. D
Here s what we ve learned and how we ve used it The material we put on our pile in the fall is turning into dark, rich soil. C
Here s what we ve learned and how we ve used it... We went on a field trip to Rumpke s Landfill. On our bus tour, we saw the different trucks they use. We learned that the landfill works with cells, filling them up at different times. They explained that they have to prepare a cell before use by putting in pipes to drain the garbage juice. They take the methane gas from the juice and use it to heat houses. P

Here s what we ve learned and how we ve used it Composting Open Response Our Earth is important to us for many reasons, such as clean air to breathe, clean water, as well as having many resources that we get from her. Reducing, reusing, and recycling are a few ways we can protect the Earth. A) Explain how creating and maintaining a compost pile plays a part in the reduce, reuse, and recycle concept. B) Describe how your community and the Earth benefit from composting. C
