Welcome to NGI Business, Career & Funding Opportunities while developing a humancentric internet The growing importance of the Internet implies that it is no longer just an IT network of networks: it is rapidly shaping the economy and our daily lives. This raises fundamental questions. Is the current internet responding to the needs of citizens? What kind of Internet do we want in ten-twenty years from now? What is the role of civil society? What ground-breaking research do we need? Can we leave the innovation in the hands of a few or should there be a bottom-up democratic participation to shape the internet? Roberto Viola, Director-General for Communications Networks, Content & Technology, NGI has a 2025 horizon it will generate business opportunities and define new career opportunities in a large, multidisciplinary domain

What is NGI? Directly linked to the DSM Cross-disciplinary A European effort, to promote European values
What are the needs & challenges? Human-centric: open, neutral, co-operative Transparent and trusted: Data Economy: Free-flow of data & General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Cyber secure: protecting citizens on line. Building confidence. Rewards not risks. Empowerment: using the ever-increasing networks of people and machines to empower people and create sustainable and inclusive societies. Making Europe a trusted hub globally with new usage and new business opportunities
Research topics discussed at the London workshop of March 20 th, A sustainable internet (Energy consumption, environmental impact) 2. Decentralising power (sustainable business model to avoid monopolies, net neutrality, ) 3. Internet and data sovereignty (lack of control over personal data, data portability, de-centralised data governance, ) 4. Ethical AI & machine learning (transparency, new standards, resilient & safe) 5. A safe accessible & diverse internet (accessibility, safe, ) 6. Trustworthy online media and information ecosystems (sustainable media, social media, collective memory) 7. Online identity & trust (secure online identity, reputation systems, ) 8. The right to opt out & self-govern (IoT systems, new models for online ownership for individuals and communities) 9. Cybersecurity and resilience (cyber-physical attacks, future proof encryption, tools to prevent cyber crimes)
NGI & related macro-areas in Europe Developing a European Data Economy NGI EOSC - European Open Science Cloud Green IT Procurement Open Science input for early career researchers Data Infrastructures Cybersecurity & Privacy Open Source; Cloud & Cluster on Data Protection, Security & Privacy
EU Values and NGI The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) embodies values for personal identity. These EU values are global values & are becoming increasingly important. EU has a great opportunity to become global in this space. Privacy-by-design solutions are gaining moment, also in several national cyber security strategies. EU R&I (e.g. cloud computing) has paved the way for best practices that can become mainstream Technology as an enabler of global human values driven by the EU
Take-home #1: Understand NGI from within What is it a hot research topic in the NGI field What it means from a business point of view Which careers is NGI shaping How am I addressing Internet Governance
Take-home #2: Get first-hand information on EC funding H2020 and FP9 as well
Take-home #3: Get on the NGI map! Being on the map officially introduces your organisation to the NGI community & increases your chances of being involved in NGI projects
Take-home #4: Get interviewed! Interviews will be taken by the NGI Team during the breaks, please don t be shy
Take-home #5: Join the NGI community in style, with the Photo Galore! LinkedIn - Next Generation Internet: 13K already joined BUSINESS, CA REER & HUMA N-CENTRIC INTERNET NOT a selfie rather, a chance to join a great community 27 MA RCH MILA N, ITA LY Targ et Lab, Build ing 16 NGI.EU t # NGIeu # NGI4 EU
Why did we choose Milan & Italy We feel that the pulsing Milan ICT fabric is underrepresented in NGI A number of Italian-based initiatives and organisations that already deserved exposure The opportunity provided also by the Cascading Grant scheme (especially for SMEs & start-ups) Milan & Italy in general can benefit from the NGI specific challenges, owing to the strong presence of SMEs and growing number of start-ups
Our goal is to Have a productive day Bring to the surface some key priorities for building blocks of the NGI flagships Take advantage of our European Champion Panel present today in our audience and as speakers Early results survey where we put ourselves in the shoes of the younger generation but also for others to answer for them but adding age discrepancy This event is live-streamed & will also be partitioned in video pills that will be publicised by the NGI communication channels Strive to build the links between People, Data, Services, Training
Thank you! Support from the s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme, under Grant Agreement no is gratefully acknowledged Contact: s.muscella@trust-itservices.com HUMA N-CENTRIC INTERNET
