So You Want to Be An Inventor

Innovation and Invention Not Just For Engineers

Innovation and Invention Innovation: The introduction of something new or a new idea, method or device. An innovation can be clearly complex or seemingly simple. Invention: An invention is a creation of the mind, and both the process to arrive at this creation or the capabilities to create it are referred to as invention. An invention is also supposed to be new, although it is unspecified for whom. An invention is a novel device, material, or technique.

What is Engineering? Engineers use science, math, economics, social, and practical knowledge to solve problems use a design process know most solutions will not work the first time appreciate the opportunity to apply content knowledge and skills

Assignment Challenge: Invent a product that will improve life in your program area Groups Grouped by Program Area The Invention (50 points) Model Diagrams Written Descriptions The Infomercial (50%) Describe/Demonstrate Product Video/Computer Animation Project

The Invention Requirements Must be a collaborative effort Must be related to your program area Novelty, uniqueness, and fresh are good Emphasis on usefulness, effectiveness Materials and design must be appropriate for the problem and the solution Diagram Scale, Labels, Title, Explanations Model Scale, Model either process or structure; don t try to do both

The Invention Rubric Requirement Points Team identified a real problem Up to 5 The solution (invention) is novel and original Up to 5 The solution is practical, useful, and appropriate for the program area Up to 5 The invention has appeal to the intended audience Up to 5 Team collaborated with each other and was open to all ideas Up to 5 Team acted in a multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary manner. Up to 5 Team used the Engineering Design Process to arrive at a solution. Up to 5 Written description adequately explains project, the goals, and the outcome Up to 5 Diagram is complete, well labeled, to scale, and contains explanations Up to 5 Model is well-made and demonstrates structure OR function but not both Up to 5

Brainstorming Problems The Invention Problems with teaching science class at MCTI Lack of water No windows Poor Ventilation Mrs. Lombardino is LOUD!!

Brainstorming Problems The Invention In your groups, brainstorm problems. NOT solutions. Just problems. I wish we had a. It s too bad we can t All products are subject to failure. Can you improve on an existing product? Troubleshooting can identify needs. Think about what problems you need to solve on a regular basis. There is no perfect design. Think about modifying an existing product

The Invention Brainstorming Solutions In your groups Collaborate Use the Design Process Be multidisciplinary (STEM) and interdisciplinary. Be creative. Anyone can do it! Consider the use of recycled materials Don t discount ANY ideas

The Invention Brainstorming Solutions Mrs. Lombardino is loud. How can we keep our classroom quieter?

The Invention Demonstrating the Solution Written Descriptions Collaborate Who designed it, What does it do, Where can we use it, When will we use it, Why should we use it, How does it work Diagrams Collaborate Draw to Scale Include comments, labels, titles, legend, etc. Models Collaborate Consider the use of recycled materials Focus on Function OR Structure, but not both

Written Descriptions The Invention My ideas is going to be egg carton soundproofing that covers the walls. This soundproofing will then be coated with other material like bulletin boards, white boards, or bookshelves. Is this an invention or an innovation? What should we write in our description?

Diagramming Ideas The Invention What is the best way to diagram this design?

Modeling Ideas The Invention How can we construct a model to demonstrate this innovation.

Modeling Ideas The Invention Your turn. In your groups brainstorm ways of modeling your ideas.

Infomercial Infomercials Are commercial television or radio programs May be relativity long commercial segment Offering consumer information related to a product or service Fascinating Infomercial Facts: Infomercials generated over $18 million in sales in 2011 On average, consumers spend $178 on infomercials products The infomercial industry nets more than $2 billion a year

Infomercial Requirements Collaborative At least 2 but not more than 5 minutes in length Must provide script Incorporate props, including invention or its model Hypothetically demonstrate What the product does Advantages of the product Ordering information ENTHUSIASM!! SELL your product

Rubric Criteria Infomercial Possible Score Time between 2 and 4 minutes but not longer than 5 Up to 5 Product name used throughout the infomercial Up to 5 Script realistically matches infomercial Up to 5 Demonstrated used of the product Up to 5 Identified advantages or how the consumer will benefit from using the product Up to 10 Provides ordering information Up to 5 Acted enthusiastically and really sold the product s features and benefits. Up to 10 Used props to make infomercial realistic Up to 5

Script Infomercial Outline of what you will say, what you will do, and what we, the audience, will see The commercial does not need to be exact but should generally follow the script Some adlibbing is acceptable Sample format for script Time Video Audio 0 5 sec Fade in picture of product Music 5 10 sec Picture of Joe holding the watchamacallit. Hi. My name is Joe. And this the watchamacallit.

Infomercial Video Video cameras from technology will be available for filming during school time You are welcome to film outside of school if you have the technology Windows MovieMaker or equivalent can be used to tie video clips together and produce special effects

Ideas for Infomercials These are all different styles of doing infomercials. Any or all can be incorporated into a single infomercial: Testimonials Interviews Celebrity Endorsements Case History/Storytelling Demonstration Call to Action Call for at least 3 times per commercial Summarize Summarize the most important points at least 3 times per commercial

Infomercial Tips and Tricks Have a lead sentence to keep channel surfers watching Keep selling with every sentence Change it up every 60 to 90 seconds. Constantly repeat what you wish to convey - but with different words, stories, etc. Say It. Explain It. Repeat It. KISS. Resist the urge to be creative. Don t lose the audience with cutesie or make them wonder what the commercial was even about Watch some commercials. See how it s done. Get some ideas. Then go with it.
