The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) Jan-Bart Calewaert Patrick Gorringe
Presentation Outline What is EMODnet? Where are we now? What s new? What s next?
EMODnet Network of +120 organizations assembling marine data, data products and metadata from diverse sources within Europe in a uniform way Aim = to unlock fragmented/hidden marine data Initiated by the European Commission in response to the EU GP on Future Maritime Policy, launched in June 2006 now core part of Marine Knowledge 2020 initiative
What does EMODnet deliver? access to data - maintained on Member States' databases - interoperable, common standards - metadata describing time, date of measurement, quality, etc. data products - maintained by consortium - map layers - quality indicators
Why EMODnet? An effective pan-european marine data infrastructure will: Enable effective and efficient marine planning and legislation for environment, fisheries, transport, border control, customs and defense; Reduce uncertainty in our knowledge and ability to forecast the behavior of the sea; Improve offshore operators efficiency and costs in gathering and processing marine data for operational and planning purposes; Stimulate competition and innovation in established and emerging maritime sectors.
prototype method Phase 1 limited sea basins Phase 2 - low resolution Phase 3 - multi-resolution allows users to assess and improve product by trying it out
budget phase 1 phase 2 bathymetry 2,175,000 2,000,000 geology 925,000 4,200,000 physics 1,000,000 1,000,000 chemistry 700,000 4,000,000 biology 750,000 1,700,000 physical habitats 800,000 1,390,000 human activity 2,060,000 6,350,000 16,350,000
Bathymetry (Dick Schaap) Geology (Alan Stevenson) Human Activities (Alvise Bragadan) Seabed Habitats (Jacques Populus) Chemistry (Alessandra Giorgetti) EMODnet thematic portals and coordinators Biology (Simon Claus) Physics (Antonio Novellino)
Preparatory Actions ,450,000 spent seven portals now operational 9
The Central Portal Acts as a gateway to the other thematic and regional EMODnet portals Also develops own data products combining data from at least 2 thematic data portals

Combined output from different data products: Query EMODnet data products simultaneously What it is: Retrieve data from multiple data products via one single interface What is the output: The output is a list of values for a given coordinate point or list of points. For a given coordinate (e.g. current position of a vessel), the system will return a list of the required parameters (depth, seabed substrate, seabed habitat, mean temperature/salinity of nearest mooring, fishing zone, national jurisdiction, protected area etc.).
Query Products simultaneously Retrieve data from specified coordinates at a given time or for a time interval Physical Parameters Bathymetry Seabed Substrate Marine Region (ICES, Protected Area) Species Abundance
sea basin checkpoints How can observation infrastructure be optimised? North Sea Mediterranean
The EMODnet Secretariat Overarching goal to develop a more efficient, effective, fit for purpose EMODnet which is better known and more widely used 1. Coordination & internal communication Steering Committee / internal updates / guide entry portal / support MODEG 2. Monitoring Test functionality / implement progress indicators / collect user-feedback / progress reports / report lessons learned / guide portals to improve them 3. Dissemination and Outreach Prepare/give on-line demonstrations / videos / brochure/ posters etc.
Hosting of the Secretariat Hosted by the Flemish Government at the InnovOcean site in Oostende, (Belgium) European Marine Board EMODnet Secretariat UNESCO IOC -IODE Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ)
Outcome of Public Consultation to gather ideas for third phase - Endorsed basic principles - need for open access to marine data, in both raw and aggregated forms - Confirmed that we are on the right track - the architecture of the current EMODnet is sound - Identified new needs 240 replies
Identified new needs More involvement of private sector Convergence of EMODnet, data collection in fisheries and Copernicus marine service Improving availability of fisheries data Improving access to data from environmental reporting Improving access to data from EU research projects Optimising observing networks (Sea basin checkpoints) Calls for tender in June (?) to extend this process to the Atlantic, Arctic, Baltic and Black Sea with three-year projects The Commission will give priority to the Euro Argo Infrastructure. Other observation, sampling or surveying programmes could also be supported provided that they satisfy the same conditions of European added-value. European Commission Roadmap for Marine Knowledge 2020 :
Conclusion EMODnet is a long term marine data initiative developed in a stepwise approach We are in the middle of development the service is already useful but much has to be done in the coming years to make it: Fully operational Provide the best available data Become more user friendly Can only be done together: we need your help!
