1 The COE scheme and CeSOS by Torbjørn Digernes, Rector, NTNU at the seminar «CeSOS » 7 January 2013
2 Two drivers for science The quest for new insight No Yes The quest for solving a problem No Yes Niels Bohr Purpose: Basic Insight Who are here? Hopefully no one by design But some because their research agenda was too ambitious Louis Pasteur Purpose: Basic Insight and Application Purpose: Application Thoma Alva Edison The concept presented in Donald E. Stokes: Pasteur s Quadrant Basic Science and Technological Innovation Brookings Institution Press 1997
3 From basic science to innovation some observations The road is not linear, «3T - things take time» the long and winding road Scientific results often must mature and be further developed to be ready for application Successful innovation requires a «prepared» society infrastructure, surrounding technologies and systems other enabling factors Several steps of applied research and technology development are normally necessary Innovation does not automatically occur where basic results were produced The process requires different competence from what produce the basic scientific results Technology development Market insight, entrepreneurship its own «ecosystem»
4 Enabling technologies - Giant ships Structural mechanics analysis of structures Developed in the late 1960-ies NTH made key contributions Improved materials has been important in later development Large diesel engines B&W was a key actor during the 60- ies, essentially the same basic technology is used today NTH had a role in analysing thermal loads in the combustion chamber Understanding materials response to thermal loads essential
5 Dynamic Positioning Demand for DP vessels to conduct all-year operation in harsh environment and extreme conditions High positioning accuracy required Enabling technologies: Control Theory making it possible to control the propulsion system Navigation system to determine exact position Propulsion systems to create the necessary propulsive power to withstand adverse weather
6 Control of slender flexible structures Topics: Control of drilling risers in dynamic positioning Positioning control and vibration damping of suspended load including wire and ropes Control of trawl system Control of seismic cables Pipe laying Multi body operations
Multiphase flow assurance challenges in Subsea to beach developments 7 Sand and fines Corrosion Liquid control and Slugging Heavy oil Hydrates and wax Illustration: HYDRO Develop and verify prediction models (OLGA) Objective: Less uncertainty in new, similar designs Better accuracy in production management 7 tools
8 Heat exchange at cryogenic temperatures of hydrocarbon mixtures
9 Statoil-Linde LNG Technology Alliance : Spiral Wound LNG Heat Exchanger Linde
10 Two drivers for science The quest for solving a problem No Yes Do we have the instruments required to serve these objectives? The quest for new insight No Yes Basic research not motivated by application Application inspired basic research Applied research Development Two important questions are: How is the research initiated? By the user or by the researcher? How are applications evaluated?
12 University contribution - enabling technologies Contributing to enabling technologies through research, which means Orienting basic research towards long term useful knowledge Following generic enabling technology development to have preparedness to pick up Preparing for an unknown future
13 University contribution - the candidates Educate competent people that brings new knowledge, and capability to innovate to industry Preparing candidates to learn in the school of life Innovators that can integrate and operate new technology in products and processes Doctorate level: Deep knowledge to develop new technology
14 Common denominators for success A professor dedicated to work in Pasteur s quadrant Good understanding of the needs of industry Ability to convert insight and knowledge from basic science to technologies providing solutions This is the key to building the bridge from basic science to innovation Educating young people embedded in the research and in the innovation environment Master and PhD level The candiates are key actors in putting the knew knowledge into use Fund research for the Pasteurs Quadrant for such environments
15 CeSOS is first step in a process that can create such results It has produced new knowledge that has potential to create such new application made available through a large numbe of applications It has educated a large number of candidates at the master and doctorate level Many are already active in society We will follow with interest the development in the coming years building on CeSOS knowledge and the CeSOS candidates carrying it into society
16 Thank for your attention!
