2 Mission &Vision Unit JRC.I.4 is unit within Directorate I (Competencies), based in Brussels, which performs Cross-cutting tasks. It consists of 21 staff and manages a budget of about 1 M.

3 Mission &Vision The Unit's mission is to protect, promote and exploit the intellectual property portfolio of the European Commission and promote trans-national scientific collaboration on technology transfer between major European public research organisations. 8 JRC Competence Centre for Technology Transfer to be launched after the Summer: (proposal to DG RTD to be Member of the Steering Committee) Competence Centre on Technology Transfer (CC TT) intends to serve as the European Commission's primary platform for policy support and capacity building in technology transfer at the EU, national, regional and local level. The core mission of the CC TT will be to provide expert services to DGs, regional and local authorities and relevant stakeholders in three key areas: technology transfer operational support, financial instruments conception and design and support to innovation ecosystems and clusters.

10 The European TTO CIRCLE In line with President Juncker's priority on Jobs and Growth, the European TTO CIRCLE network was established in the frame of the Innovation Union initiative with the aim to bring together the major European public research organisations in order to play a collective role in driving changes to the technology transfer landscape in Europe

11 The TTO Circle Vision To make a substantial contribution to European innovation and become a key reference for technology transfer in Europe and beyond Mission Share expertise, exchange best practices and develop synergies at the European level in the field of technology transfer in collaboration with EARTO Provide support to EU and national R&I policies building on the member s collective experience, their catalytic and role model functions, and develop collaborative pilot projects on technology transfer

12 Objectives Collaborating Sharing Foster collaboration among Members and develop a common understanding of TT issues; Investigate the opportunity of establishing patent pools and/or cross-licensing in technological sectors; Develop joint activities, events or actions relevant to technology transfer. Communicating Share best practices and provide a web platform for exchanging documents, databases and working tools; Establish a forum for the exchange of ideas that enhance and build an understanding of the practice of technology transfer with emphasis on management practices and TT strategies. Educating Establish direct channels of communication between TTOs of European large PROs; Bring the common needs of the TTOs to the attention of both the EU and Member States' policy makers; Discuss best approaches to improve access to the results of publicly-financed R&D. Organisejoint trainings and visits of staff to the premises of partner PROs; Explore possibilities for short term staff exchange; Contribute to the establishment of standards for the certification of TT professionals.

17 JRC in collaboration with the National Research Council (Cnr) is organising a workshop on Technology Transfer in Nanotechnology which will take place in CNR Nanotec (Lecce, Italy) on 18 and 19 October. This workshop is organised in the framework of the TTO-CIRCLE initiatives. The aim of this event is to explore how technology transfer activities can be used as a mechanism to help EU industry, particularly Start-ups and SMEs, in deploying and adopting Nano-technology. Practical examples will be presented to illustrate the potential of technology transfer in this area. The workshop will gather technology providers, industry executives, technology transfer officers, policy makers and financial intermediaries to share experiences and lessons learned. One of the key objectives is to discuss policy implications at all levels that could help accelerating the adoption of Nanotechnology by the European manufacturing industry.
