SOCIAL ORGANISATIONAL LCA (SOLCA): Definition: SOLCA is a methodology to assess the social and socioeconomic performance of a company and potential impacts of the activities and the product portfolio of an organisation from a life cycle perspective. 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY) 3
MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SOCIAL LCA AND SOCIAL ORGANISATIONAL LCA: Technical Framework (ISO 14040:2006) SOCIAL LCA SOCIAL ORGANISATIONAL LCA Goal and Scope SOCIAL LCA Goal Focused on the product assessment Focused on the assessment of the social performance of the organisation Object of study Unit of analysis Individual product (good and service) Organisation Functional Unit and Reference SOCIAL Flow ORGANISATIONAL Reporting Unit: LCA Reporting Organisation (subject of study, consolidation method, reference period). Reporting Flow (MartinézBlanco et al. 2015) System Boundary Processes and materials are the units of the life cycle; Direct and indirect impacts are not distinguished. Organisations are the units in the value chain of the reporting organisation. Direct and indirect activities and associated impacts are differentiated within the system boundary. (UNEP/SETAC, 2015) 4 6TH INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY)
SOCIAL LCA SOCIAL ORGANISATIONAL LCA Life Cycle Inventory The outcomes may be updated but it is not common to do so periodically. Due to the performance tracking objective, SO LCA is expected to be applied to the organization in consecutive years. Supporting Activities Data Collection Those activities that are not directly linked to the production are usually not considered. The use of specific data for the product assessed is expected. SOLCA does consider activities generally disregarded in product LCA (e.g., business travel, heating, cleaning services, managerial offices). The use of more generic or extrapolated data is expected, particularly in big organizations providing complex products. Life Cycle Impact Assessment Impact Categories Type 1: to aggregate the results for the subcategories within a theme of interest to a stakeholder, e.g., human rights. (UNEP/SETAC, 2009) Checklist method Scoring Method SHDB Method Type 1: to aggregate the results for the subcategories within a theme of interest to a stakeholder, e.g., human rights. (UNEP/SETAC, 2009) Type 2 : to model the results for the subcategories that have a causal relationship defined on the criteria, e.g., autonomy (UNEP/SETAC, 2009) Type 2 : to model the results for the subcategories that have a causal relationship defined on the criteria, e.g., autonomy (UNEP/SETAC, 2009) Empirical Method ELCI Database Method 5 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY)
THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF SOLCA: Stakeholders categories and subcategories SLCA Social indicators at organisational level SA8000 GRI, SIA, AA1000 SOLCA OLCA Guidelines of Organisational Lifecycle Assessment Figure 1: The conceptual framework of SOLCA 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY) 6
GOAL AND RESEARCH QUESTION: GOAL To show how the existing experiences of the organisation considered for the definition of the goal and scope phase in the SOLCA. RESEARCH QUESTION Which information and data are collected through the experiences of the company on social sustainability issues? 7 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY)
CLASSIFICATION OF EXPERIENCES: a. Experiences with product social life cycle approaches b. Experiences with social organisational approaches c. Experiences with environmental life cycle approaches 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY) 8
CASE STUDY: ITALIAN WINE SECTOR GOAL AND SCOPE DEFINITION of the casestudy: Description of the company Goal It is a consortium composed by 9 wineries in the province of Chieti (Abruzzo) and these wine grower associations collect members. Reference Period: 2017 Reporting Flow: Economic revenue of the NIRO brand Cradletogate 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY) 9
FLOW CHART OF THE NIRO BRAND: 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY) 10
RESULTS: Experiences RESULTS: Information and data obtained Foreground processes Harvest Process Wine production Bottling ISO 14001:2004 ISO 9001:2009 Mapping of unit processes Structure of management team Lay out of company Evaluating and monitoring of the suppliers BRC Information on suppliers Health and Safety on facilities and workers Mapping of supply chain SA8000 Worker conditions 11 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY)
SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS: A lot of information on social and environmental aspects of the organisation are available for the practitioners: the mapping of the suppliers, the evaluation of some indicators, the social policy the system practices made by the organisation Working conditions (Salary, Child Labour; Discrimination, Health/Safety, Working Hours, Freedom of Association). 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY) 12
CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS: The identified information and existing data allow: to overcome the difficulty to communicate with the company; to have a preliminary knowledge of the aspects and topics to analyse to save time and resources for applying the goal and scope phase. This preliminary application suggests maybe there is also an advantage in the application of the other phases of the SOLCA. NEXT STEPS: To identify if and how the existing experiences can support also for the other phases. 6H INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT CONFERENCE, 1012 SEPTEMBER, 2018 PESCARA (ITALY) 13
