1 Challenges and Opportunities in building a Sustainable Global IPR Ecosystem for Promotion of Innovation in ICTE Sector Dr. Santosh Mohanty Tata Consultancy Services Limited India-Europe Conference Friday, November 20, 2015
2 Key Tenets of Sustainable Ecosystem Strategy and Process 1. Market Discovery 2. Impact Analysis Business, Society and Environment 3. Policy Level Facilitation 4. Innovation Management 5. Change Management Agility Efficiency Quality Security Scalability Reliability Resilience Freedom Platform and Delivery I. Innovation, Pilot and Mainstream Adoption II. Managing boundary-less Data Flow III. Intellectual Capital Management IV. Managing change and continuous improvement V. 3 Sustainable Ecosystem The Inclusive View MARKET INSIGHT Track Market Trends Identify Whitespace Discover Blind Spots Analyze Portfolio Landscape PROTECT The Inclusive View OUTREACH Plan for scaling Articulate Value Proposition Discover un-met need To embrace sustainable ecosystem, enterprises have to develop a start-up culture in promoting innovation and a fast track process to transform the intellectual property into products or service offerings.
4 The Future of ICTE industry The hyper-connected world we live in is fundamentally altering our lives. Digital technologies are challenging long-held norms. The borderless nature of the internet and content services stands in contrast to regional boundaries of operators and the national regulations they adhere to. Today s critical issues span a much more complex, interconnected value chain. Policies must take into account the impact on investment and innovation across multiple industries. Policy-makers should pursue forward-looking, light-touch approaches to regulation. The Transformational Vectors Source: IDC Worldwide Prediction 2015: Accelerating Innovation on the 3 rd Platform Digital Economy Data Economy Digital Divide Digital Governance Cyber Resilience Internet of Things Supply Chain Vulnerability Materials and Manufacturing Innovation Intellectual Property Management Business Model Disruption Uncertain Policy Landscape Trade Barriers Jobs and Social Disruption Digital Skills Gap Trust Deficit Security, Privacy, Quality and Commitment Source: Mapping Global Transformation, World Economic Forum
5 ICTE industry: Intellectual Property Opportunities and Challenges Intellectual property is hotly contested in an industry that innovates fast and where technological and design advantages can result in large opportunities. New companies have emerged whose sole activity is to create and lease IP. There are companies that disrupted the business models and displaced the titans. Whereas few others have achieved the zenith and then vanished from the scene with a result of certain market dynamics. Opportunities New business model Technology enabled service experience and assurance Pervasive computing and ubiquitous access Elastic Infrastructure Cognitive Automation Technology enabled connected ecosystem Boundary-less data flow Model based sampling for data analysis and insights Discovery based data induction Self Rectification, Self healing and Self Service Cyber Security Software defined every thing Software defined hyper-connectivity Digital Learning Challenges Striking the right balance between open and protected IP is critical for the innovation to flourish. The issue is clouded by mercantilist practices and wide discrepancies in the ability and willingness of different countries to enforce patent protections. While ICTE is becoming the backbone of everything, the debate on Computer Implemented Inventions and lack of uniformity of its interpretation in major jurisdictions Gap in up-to-date guiding principles and governance towards promotion, facilitation and acceptance of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) Skills gap towards adoption of digital disruptive models may hinder the widespread adoption and next phase of innovation
