1 Partnering to Accelerate Commercialization Annual Report
2 Our Vision is that the Canadian Electronics Manufacturing sector is recognized as the global leader in product commercialization. Our Mission is to enable and accelerate commercialization of electronics innovations ensuring that Canada s investment in electronics technology translates into economic growth and job creation. Five Year Outlook ENGAGE ACCELERATE Partnered with 29 industry leaders in Optics/Photonics, New Materials and Renewable Energy Secured public and private funding totalling $19M Leveraged 38 labs/manufacturing facilities across Canada Funded 15 highly promising commercialization projects Kick-started start-up and small-medium enterprises (SME) mentoring program Attend global conferences and trade missions Build new strategic partnerships Expand network to enhance the value chain Move project technology readiness levels (TRL) closer to commercialization Increase network visibility around the world
3 What is ReMAP? The Refined Manufacturing Acceleration Process (ReMAP) is a business-led network involving dozens of startups, SMEs and large-sized organizations and leading research institutions from across Canada to form an integrated shared ecosystem. Our network is focused on the acceleration of the commercialization of electronics products manufactured in Canada for a global market. Through shared resources and knowledge, ReMAP promotes lateral innovation across many sectors like Aerospace and Defense (A&D), Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Healthcare, Industrial and Renewable Energy. Together, we are using leading edge technologies to advance next-generation innovations by developing reliable and environmentally compliant materials, miniaturizing and reducing the cost of optical technologies for new markets, and improving the performance and cost efficiency of solar installations. ReMAP is made possible through joint funding from the Government of Canada s Business-led Networks of Centres of Excellence (BL-NCE) program matched by contributions from our network partners. GROW COMMERCIALIZE EXPAND Develop advanced manufacturing materials and products for A&D, ICT, Healthcare and Renewable Energy Incorporate advanced processes into manufacturing operations Support development of new related curriculum for highly qualified personnel (HQP) training Accelerate time to market for new products Improve product quality and differentiation Reduce cost of new and improved products Create more opportunities for highly skilled workforce Enable more HQP jobs Leverage lateral innovation into new markets Create a blueprint in other regions and sectors Expand the network to other geographies Export products developed in Canada
4 Message from the Board Chair ReMAP was formed in 2014 to accelerate the commercialization of leading edge technologies in manufacturing priority areas. In December 2014, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the decision to add Advanced Manufacturing to Canada s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) strategy ReMAP is proud to be one of the two federally-funded manufacturing networks. We are encouraged by the Canadian government s commitment to invest in industrial research that will advance Canada s growth and innovation. As the ReMAP Board Chair, I am very pleased to share with you the highlights of our achievements in this Annual Report was a breakthrough year for ReMAP. We prioritized our activities to build the infrastructure for a product-enablement ecosystem. Today, we have an ambitious strategy to accomplish the next phase of our innovation strategy. Our plan in the coming years is to expand our membership with strategic partners; develop our network of start-ups, SMEs and large enterprises to enhance the commercialization value chain; leverage innovation to branch out to new manufacturing areas; and bring technologies developed through ReMAP partnerships to the global market. Building on the foundational investments of public/private contributions, we have established a collaborative model for commercialization. We are committed to making a significant contribution to Canada to help build its competitive advantage, create new highly skilled jobs and provide opportunities to build export-ready products that will have long-term economic benefit. Of behalf of ReMAP, I would like to thank all of our partners and supporters who were instrumental in establishing the ground work for our vision to position Canada as the destination of choice for global electronics manufacturing excellence. 5 Message from the Executive Director As products are being launched exponentially faster than ever before, the role of ReMAP is to accelerate product commercialization. In a world of software start-ups, the manufacturing of hardware products differentiates this network strengthening an innovative future for Canada. Our 29 partners contribute their expertise from the A&D, ICT, Healthcare, Industrial and Renewable Energy sectors and are engaged in optics/photonics, renewable energy and new material projects at later stage TRL. Our collaborative model enables industry and research partners to accelerate commercialization of differentiated products that meet today s industry challenges bridging the gap between applied research and product development. Collaborative Model for Commercialization Labs Universities Corporate R&D Bridging the Commercialization Gap Volume Manufacturing for the Global Market RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT MANUFACTURING Technology Readiness Levels In addition to building the network infrastructure, strategic governance and project portfolio, there were several opportunities to increase global visibility of ReMAP in ReMAP engaged with several industry and trade organizations and spoke at industry conferences. Our network partners attended international conferences in Japan, France, Germany and the United States. ReMAP gained national attention when Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Celestica to tour five of the 38 labs/manufacturing lines ReMAP leverages from across Canada. The first ReMAP funded research paper was presented at the SMTA Pan-Pacific Symposium in Kauai, Hawaii in February Building on the foundation of our product-enablement ecosystem, with a strong partnership management strategy in place, we have an ambitious vision for growth and innovation over the next few years. In 2015, we will build on early successes to provide technological advances that will impact growth for Canada onward!
