2 Context As we start to run out of conventional sources of oil and gas, we start turning to less conventional sources such as fracking and tar sands. These are dirtier sources of oil and gas that we would not have bothered with 20 years ago, illustrating our continued dependence on fossil fuels as the norm.

Unlike conventional sources production from shale oil and gas can fall off dramatically. Can the USA keep this up? Also think global/national scale and wider carbon cycle. Support with examples eg, Alberta tar sands, Marcellus shale and deep water oil. Conclude: Are unconventional sources the best way of meeting demand and improving energy security?

10 Deepwater Brazil Deepwater Brazil is a hotbed of activity with reserves estimated at 31 billion BOE. Most of this will come from deepwater where Petrobras and other key operators are relying on companies like Halliburton. We are all working closely together to pioneer the use of innovative technology required to achieve oil production from tremendous water depths, spurred by the recently discovered giant pre salt fields. These fields are among the most complex ever drilled located in 7,000 ft of water with reservoirs buried underneath salt layers up to 6,500 ft thick. To help develop these fields, Halliburton is building a Technology Center in Rio De Janeiro. It will become a deepwater center of expertise for Halliburton worldwide and work with a leading Brazilian university to develop efficient, new technologies for deepwater. Many discoveries in Brazil and most current production come from post salt reservoirs (above the salt layer). Whether it s a pre or post salt target, the keys to expediting exploration and development in Brazil are found in the long term integration of a vast range of technology and expertise.
