One of these innovations is the development of custom routing tools which have allowed the detailed routing and analysis of cables to be carried out quickly and effectively, whilst carefully considering the installation constraints, seabed geomorphology and seabed obstructions and hazards. Case studies from two north sea projects are presented, one demonstrates how Woods detailed routing tools facilitated a reduction in the UXO investigation scope by ~50%, and another, where a boulder clearance scope was optimised by careful planning of suitable clearance tools per route section. Wood Plc has also developed WebGIS technologies which are being used on major offshore projects to share design, survey and real-time installation information to all interested parties. The rock berm is designed to minimise risk to the cable by specific selection of rock size and berm side slopes. If the rock berm is designed with a high profile and perpendicular to the main tidal flows, this can lead to uncharacteristic eddies forming on the far side of the rock berm which can potentially create a scour hole. This may result in cable exposure and cable free spans. OWC will present lessons learnt and also outlines methods and details they have used to successfully stabilise these situations.
