Genealogy Center - 8 Annual LockIn & Fall Classes th When you search for ancestors, you find great friends! Editors Corner Free genealogy events are coming up that you will not want to miss. The annual statewide Genealogy Lock-In is set for Friday, October 19 from 9 am to 9 pm. This event will be held at over 40 libraries across the state so if you don t live in the Plano area check out the list at CCGS has a great program scheduled for Wednesday on US land and property records, which are very important in locating your ancestors. 2 Collin County Genealogical Society enews Issue 25, October 2018 A Genealogical Treasure Hunt - CCGS Library Displays by Fran Faitt The CCGS library display for Oct 2018 is installed. The theme is A Genealogical Treasure Hunt and was compiled by LuAnne Jones, Julie Avedikian, and Fran Faitt. There are 12 display boards. Only 2 are included here. More are available on request. They address the areas of family data, Library research, Online and offline data, Courthouse records, DNA, and lineage societies. 3 DNA Tips & Tools by Paula Perkins MyHeritage DNA Changes Deadline In the Near Future MyHeritage DNA has recently announced two changes with free uploads of your DNA results and data. To read the full story please read the article by Judy Russell, The Legal Genealogist. Dallas Genealogical Society DNA Special Interest Group meets the 3 rd Thursday at 6:00 pm on the 7 th floor. They will discuss and explore the use of DNA in genealogy research at the Haggard Library, Tuesday, November 13 from 7-8pm. Don t have Collin County Ancestry? 5 News Continued Genealogy Center News - Haggard Library The Genealogy Center will participate in the state wide Genealogy Lock-In on Friday, October 19, 2018 from 9 am to 9 pm. This is the 8 th annual statewide lock-in with both local and national speakers broadcast via webinars. The kick off speaker will be Judy Russell aka The Legal Genealogist presenting Don t Forget the Ladies. The event is free and you can come and go. They have a full line up of Fall 2018 classes to assist you with your genealogy endeavors. Genealogy-Classes-Fall-2018 Moses Mahan, Veteran of the War of 1812 The Craig Austin Rowley Chapter, General Society War of 1812 and the John Cavet Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812 will hold a grave marking ceremony for Private Moses Mahan, veteran of the War of 1812, in Pike Cemetery, CR 1100, located near Blue Ridge, at 2PM, October 20, Private Moses Mahan was born in South Carolina in 1795 and died in Texas in He is buried in the cemetery of Pilgrim Baptist Church, now known as Pike Baptist Church in Collin County Texas. Moses Mahan served two tours of duty in the Tennessee Militia, first as a substitute for his brother Robert S Mahan from Dec 1813 Jun 1814 under Captain James Berry, and second from Sept 1814 Mar 1815 under Captain A Rogers. In July of 1815, he married Elizabeth Click in Roane County, TN. The young couple had relocated to Arkansas territory by the early 1820s where Moses claimed his bounty land in what eventually became Hempstead County Arkansas. Between 1850 and 1853 the Mahan family relocated to Texas in the four corners area of Collin, Hunt, Fannin, and Grayson counties, eventually settling in the Pike community near Blue Ridge in Collin County. Moses and Elizabeth were the parents of 12 children, most of whom raised their families in the Collin County area.
