5 Intent & Purpose of P&ID s A piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) is defined by the Institute of Instrumentation and Control as follows: 1. A diagram which shows the interconnection of process equipment and the instrumentation used to control the process. In the process industry, a standard set of symbols is used to prepare drawings of processes. The instrument symbols used in these drawings are generally based on International Society of Automation (ISA) (formerly Instrument Society of America) Standard The primary schematic drawing is used for laying out a process control installation as well as providing a scope of process functions. P&ID s typically will contain Process Name, Pipe Sizes, Flow Directions, Instrumentation, Interconnection, Motors, Motor Control, Valves, Fittings and more. Additionally P&ID s provide all contractors the ability to be on the same playing field during the project bid process. Source:
6 Symbols, Identification, and Interconnection Each P&ID is made up of process functions referred to as Loops. Each loop will show identification and symbols in accordance with ISA S5.1, as well as interconnections to other devices such as a Recorder, Process Controller, PLC, DCS, Final Elements, etc. Deciphering Symbols (Figure 1) ISA 5.1 defines four graphical elements discrete instruments, shared control/display, computer function, and programmable logic controller and groups them into three location categories (primary location, auxiliary location, and field mounted). Deciphering Identification (Figure 2) The first letter defines the measured or initiating variables such as Analysis (A), Flow (F), Temperature (T), etc. with succeeding letters defining readout, passive, or output functions such as Indicator (I), Record (R), Transmit (T), and so forth. Device Loop Numbering Each device in a Loop will have a number or alpha numeric number. Number will be unique to the process name. For instance all devices related to a Primary Clarifier operation in waste water treatment plant will appear with the same Number. Device loop number typically begins at the first stage of a process. 20 Shop Drawings Interpreted from P&ID Shop Drawings for either Control Panel Wiring, Field Wiring or both, as interpreted from the project P&ID d can come in a couple different forms. These drawings are often to as Loop drawings. 1. Based on ISA 5.1, when the ISA 5.1 format is specified by the end user or consulting engineer. 2. Based on the system integrators developed standards, when the drawing format is not specified. Both types are a point to point type of drawing that can be created once the primary elements and panel components are defined.
