This document is the synthesis of national recommendations and should be considered as a basis to develop future national Images guidelines based on GS1 Product Image specification for marketing images. 1.2 Scope Only the highest quality images will be specified in our guidelines. The images may be resized for online purposes but our specifications will not cover this part because stand-ards have not been requested locally (needs are evolving quickly and there are too many different configurations). Note This document may be subject to future changes in order to integrate new international technical specifications, or to respond to new business requirements. 3 2. Marketing images guidelines 2.1 Views The front view of a product is the starting point for additional images. This is defined by using the Package Measurement Rules of GS1 (GDSN Measurement Rules). The front side of a user unit is the side with the largest surface area, which is used by the manufacturer to advertise the product to the consumer, that is, for example, the side with the indication of the product name. Additional guidance on determining the front is describes in the section "Measurement Rules packaging" (Section 2.4). Colour should be matched to product PMS colours (list to be provided by design-er). If PMS colour is not available or if colour is proprietary, users must either match as closely as possible to colour swatches or the actual RGB breakdown must be provided. The image should be photographed with large depth of field so that the whole product is sharp. The Image should not be over sharpened in the (digital) image processing. The lighting of product should be uniform when the image is taken. 2.3 Clipping Paths The product image must contain one active clipping path in order for the product to be silhouetted. It is important for the purpose of batch image repurposing that the clipping path be named as "Path 1". If you consider that the official front size is not relevant, you may choose another as the main marketing image. For unpackaged goods (eg fresh food, DIY) the Measurement Rules do not exist or are not completely described. 2.2 Image Colour and Quality No colour casts. Colour should be as rich, vibrant and eye-catching as possible. Colour should be balanced over-all and not blown-out in highlights. Flesh tones and grass should be realistic and life- like. Reflections should also be realistic. Shadows should be realistic and neutral. Retouching should be as seamless and undetectable as possible and be convincing at a minimum of 200% magnification (i.e. removal of expiration/best before dates. 4 5

4 2.4 Backgrounds and edge As clipping path is mandatory, giving recommendation on background may not be rele-vant. However, if a choice has to be made, we recommend a transparent or knocked out to white (RGB 255/255/255) background. The image should be cropped close to the object. Recommendation: cropping exactly to the image object's edge or maximum 2,5 % from image object edge to image cropping (image sides). 2.5 File Format and Colour Mode File format Tiff LZW Compressed is recommend as the recommendations apply to high quality image exchange (including printing purposes) If printing is explicitly excluded, other exchange formats may be considered (jpeg, png) Colour Mode: RGB. The ICC profile or exact colour space must be known and defined. The preference for storage of the source file is RGB 8 bit per channel. Choose IMAGE and MODE to change to 8 bit/channel. If the colour mode needs to be changed, choose EDIT and CONVERT TO PROFILE to select RGB. Example cropping: the left image is cropped exatly to the product and the second image is cropped with 2,5% white surface from the product s outer edges. The file naming looks like this for RGB 8 bits. 6 7

5 2.6 Image Size and File resolution 2400 pixels on the longest or tallest side is considered as the target size for marketing images in Europe pixels is the minimum for printing. For other purposes, i.e webshops, images should be resized by the end user for their own specific applications. Recommended file resolution: 300 ppi (pixel per inch).
