2 Dear Friends, Cover Photo General Superior Sister Sung Hae Kim addresses the congregation on the occasion of the installation of the new General Council. (Photo by Rebecca Emanuele.) As I write this, the sun is shining and the warmth of summer permeates the landscape of our motherhouse, Caritas Christi. We are so blessed to have this beautiful property and we are keenly aware that it is because of the goodness of our benefactors that we can continue to enjoy these beautiful grounds and our motherhouse. Thank you so much! I especially wish to thank you for your assistance in helping us with Phase II of our Care Campaign for Caritas Christi. Your very generous contributions will be used toward our RoamAlert system and safer floor coverings for our sisters who use walkers and wheelchairs. The new flooring is more costly than we anticipated, but with your help, it will be installed. I also want to share with you that the Elizabeth Seton Memory Care Center officially opened on May 4, We currently have six residents, with the potential to accommodate an additional six women. The Center is housed in a wing on the first floor of Caritas Christi, and the facility offers loving, professional care to residents who experience memory impairment. We have hired an excellent professional staff and the residents are enjoying the opportunity for Mass with the sisters, as well as a broad range of other planned activities. If you know of anyone who needs this type of care, do refer her caregiver to Mr. Ron Berlingo, our administrator, at , extension In this issue you will find an article inviting you to participate in an Open House on September 13, This day will be celebrated as part of the Year of Consecrated Life and simultaneously will give each of you an opportunity to learn more about Mother Seton and our lives as Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. We are planning the day with activities for all ages, and we hope to make it a family-friendly fun day! Please plan to join us. You will also read the story of one of our sisters who has been waking the world to a different way of living for 80 years. I hope you will enjoy all of the articles that are part of this edition of Celebration, and learn how we are following Pope Francis call for religious persons to Wake up the World! If you wish to know something that is not included in these articles, check out our website and Facebook page for many additional stories and photos of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. But never hesitate to contact us directly and share your insights and questions with us. We would love to hear from you! Mother Seton wrote to a friend, Our Adored has given us hearts to love each other. You, our benefactors, have shown this love to us again and again. Because of your generosity, we are able to care for our sisters and remain actively involved in many ministries. So again, I say thank you on behalf of all of the sisters. 3 Sister Mary Janet Ryan, SC Waking the World with Gladness for Eighty Years Sister Mary Janet was awarded the John J. McGrady Award for humanitarian commitment at the 2005 Annual Art Rooney Award Dinner by Jane Strittmatter, Director of Public Relations for the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill W ith a vivacious spirit and a zest for life, she enjoyed everything Pittsburgh had to offer a teenager Kennywood, Forbes Field, Isaly s, ice skating, roller skating, going on dates, and more. But in 1935, the petite 17-year-old Irish girl with piercing blue eyes was called to a different way of living. Inspired by Mother Seton s words, We are ministers of God s providence for the relief of others, Sister Mary Janet has embraced a life of service that has kept her young at heart and ever joyful. In her own unique way, Sister Mary Janet has been waking the world to a different way of doing things for eighty years. Sister Mary Janet entered the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill from Sacred Heart Parish, Shadyside. An unforgettable teacher, she made a safe haven for students in post- Depression, pre-world War II elementary classrooms. She was not afraid to roll up her sleeves and play baseball with the kids in her long habit. Her students said, We couldn t wait to get to school in the morning. Sister of Charity Vivien Linkhauer fondly remembers her high school classes with Sister Mary Janet. History was never dull! We heard the poetry about the period and read historical novels which brought the figures to life. I can still recite The Song of the Shirt about the Industrial Revolution! During her 25-year tenure at Seton Hill University, Sister Mary Janet made history come alive through unique classroom exercises that explored culture and made lessons relevant. Students would roleplay historical events or dress as a character of the period of study. Sister Mary Janet, herself, once came to class dressed as a flapper to teach about the Roaring Twenties. Courageous and willing to take risks, Sister Mary Janet had much to teach from her own life experiences. In the pre-civil rights days of the 50s, Sister Mary Janet spent a few summers in Louisiana teaching the Sisters of the Holy Family, a community of African-American women religious. On one visit, she firmly but politely stood up to an indignant white couple who disapproved of her choice of a bus seat among those designated for black people. Stories like this prompted one student to say, Never would there be a teacher of more energy or purpose. Even in retirement, Sister Mary Janet s popularity thrived on campus. She actively participated in Seton Hill student activities and served as a volunteer for alumni events and fundraisers. Her life transitioned from the classroom to the courthouse when Sister became a volunteer advocate for the Criminal Victim Witness Service at the Westmoreland County Courthouse. For fourteen years, she accompanied witnesses navigating an unfamiliar and often daunting legal system, giving comfort and moral support to victims and their families forced to relive tragic experiences. Her outgoing, compassionate personality made her the favorite of every lawyer and judge. Sister Mary Janet enjoys life and shares her joy freely. She continues to cheer for the Seton Hill athletic teams and is an avid Steelers and Pirates fan, known to sport the black and gold. Her passion for celebrating every season of life is evident in a wardrobe of holiday attire that she wears so well especially on Saint Patrick s Day. In recognition of her exemplary career and for her dedication to helping people in the most despairing moments of their lives, Sister Mary Janet was awarded the John J. McGrady Award for humanitarian commitment at the 2005 Annual Art Rooney Award Dinner. In accepting the award, she gave a prescription for happiness and longevity. There is no better exercise for the heart than reaching down to help people, reaching across to help people, or reaching up to help people. Sister Mary Janet s way of living demonstrates what Pope Francis meant in saying, A charism needs to be lived according to the place, times, and people. The charism is not a bottle of distilled water. It needs to be lived with energy, rereading it culturally too. Sister Mary Janet understands what people need to find true joy and she continues to reach out to help all she encounters. Her correspondence and conversation always bring smiles, her prayers give comfort, and her attitude attracts others to generosity and compassion. My work with active young people or older enthusiastic people taught me that youth, as old age, is not a time of life; it is a state of mind, an attitude. We are as old as our doubts and as young as our self-confidence. Sister Mary Janet s youthful spirit is a continuing witness to a different and joyful way of life that relies on generosity and self-forgetfulness. Art Rooney Award Dinner photos by Jack Wolf. 4 5

5 Guests to Experience Our Roots and Scope as Citizens of the World by Sister Barbara Einloth Wake Up the World! Pope Francis challenged us when he designated 2015 as the Year of Consecrated Life. Our September 13, 2015, Open House is designed to Wake Up the World to the life, witness and ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. To give extra energy to the gathering, we chose the 40 th Anniversary of the canonization of our foundress, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, whose life and outlook continue to urge us to be citizens of the world [standing] in solidarity with all creation. We want to share our joy with a wide audience. Our goals for the day include reaching an audience that does not yet know our congregation very well, from children to elders. Of course we will also welcome the friends who come, as we help guests to know our Sisters of Charity congregation, see our motherhouse, and learn about some current ministries in which we engage. Deepening and expanding our guests appreciation of Mother Seton fits well with the canonization anniversary. During the hours of 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., guests can choose among a few scheduled pieces and numerous on-going opportunities. The day will conclude with a simple prayer service, involving children as well as adults, in Queen of Peace Chapel at Doran Hall. Visitors will have opportunity to discover our heritage as revealed in artifacts and pictures, to tour Caritas Christi, and to hear and see bits of memory from the canonization by sisters who attended the historic event. Sister Mary Clark s onewoman play will provide insights into Mother Seton s life, prayer, and impact then as well as now. Photos with Mother Seton and activities for children will be part of the day. One display will illustrate the countries in which we serve and the global and ecological issues on which we act. A number of the current ministries of our province, as well as ways to partner with us, will be showcased in the McCullough Room. We anticipate a day of welcome as we share the riches of our tradition and religious life with all who join us for the afternoon. 8 9

7 Q& A Q: This is the second in a series of Celebration interviews that applaud the remarkable accomplishments of some of our friends, contributors, partners, and volunteers. These are people who in some way demonstrate a great appreciation for their communities and for the mission of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. This interview is with Lynda Waggoner, the Vice President of the Pennsylvania Conservancy and Director of Falling Water, the world famous home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Bear Run, Pennsylvania. Lynda visited our beautiful Queen of Peace Chapel last fall and gave us much needed advice on how best to preserve the Chapel for future generations. She was particularly interested in the superb chapel furnishings designed by the renowned Japanese-American wood master, George Nakashima. The chapel was designed by Celli-Flynn Brennan Architects and Planners in the early 1960s. In 2012, the firm received the Timeless award for the design of the chapel. Sister Mary Francis Irwin, SC, Josefa Mary Filkosky, and Sylvester Damianos collaborated on the chapel and made many outstanding works of art for the space. The public is invited to participate in Taizé Prayers for Peace on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the Queen of Peace Chapel. Please join us! Interview with Lynda Waggoner Director of Fallingwater by Julia Trimarchi Cuccaro, Esq., Director of Development for the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Was there an ingredient in your background that caused you to become so interested and successful in the field of historic preservation? A: Yes, my parents. In the mid-1960s they restored an historic stage coach stop on U.S. Route 40 known as the Rush House. They did all the work themselves. They were also in the hotel and the antique business. Q: Did you have formal education in the area of historic preservation? A: I studied architecture for a couple of years at the University of Kentucky, and then I got my degree in Art History and Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh. My interest and emphasis was on non-western art, mainly Asian, some native American, and African works, particularly crafts. Q: How did you first become introduced to Falling Water? A: My parents were good friends of I.N. and Bernardine Hagan, the couple who owned Kentuck Knob in Fayette County, and I was very familiar with their home, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1965, the Pennsylvania Conservancy had recently acquired Falling Water from the Kaufmann family, and Mrs. Hagan called my mother and told her that Falling Water needed guides and suggested that I apply. I was very interested, so I went over, applied, and was accepted. Q: What was your first impression? A: I felt instantly that it was a game changer for me. I felt it deeply, in my solar plexus! Q: What was the atmosphere like in those days? A: It was really great. There were a number of art historians around Falling Water at that time, and they sort of took me under their wing. Q: Tell me about the development of your career from then on? A: Well, in the mid-1970s, I became the founding director of Touchstone Center for Crafts, located in the Laurel Highlands. The center was founded in 1972 as Pioneer Crafts Council and the original mission was to foster interest in the preservation of traditional mountain crafts. Today the Touchstone mission includes contemporary crafts as well. The center is Pennsylvania s only residential craft school where some of North America s finest artisans offer craft courses. Then in the early 1980s, I went back to Falling Water as a consultant and then became a curator, then the Site Administrator, and then the director in I am also the Vice President of The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Q: Can you explain the primary work of the Conservancy? A: The Conservancy primarily works to conserve exceptional natural places. We are concerned with biodiversity. Here in Pennsylvania, we have conserved about 250,000 acres, mostly here in the western half of the state. We have done some very large forests, including the initial land acquisition at Ohiopyle on behalf of the state. We work mostly with partners. We do all kinds of projects. We manage gardens for the state. In the summer, we do hanging baskets in downtown Pittsburgh with the Laurel Foundation. Falling Water was an unusual acquisition for us, but the Conservancy felt it was important to do, as we must live in harmony with nature, which is Falling Water. Q: You feel a real connection to nature when you visit! A: Yes, you do. The house is intimate with the landscape. Q: Does the Conservancy own Kentuck Knob? A: No, it is owned by Lord Peter Palumbo and is self-managed, but the Conservancy handles all the ticketing. Q: It s my understanding that many of the furnishings at Kentuck Knob were made by the late George Nakashima, the wood master who lived in New Hope, Pennsylvania. A: Yes, actually, Mr. Kaufmann suggested that the Hagans have Nakashima do their furnishings. The Kaufmanns were very interested in design. Their son, Mr. Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., was the Director of Interior Design at the Museum of Modern Art, and he headed MOMA s Good Design program for several years. He believed in good design for the average person. You could see it in what they sold at the Kaufmann Department Store. Q: Here at the Sisters of Charity, we were very happy to have you visit our Queen or Peace Chapel. As you know, the furnishings for the chapel were designed and made by Mr. Nakashima. To me, it s an utterly beautiful and special place. What was your impression when you first saw it? A: I was surprised! I didn t expect it! Q: What didn t you expect? A: The scale of it! It s the largest ensemble of Nakashima s work that I ve seen. It s not just one piece, it has everything! It s a cohesive, organic whole. It imbues peace and harmony. I was thoroughly impressed, and it s in wonderful condition. It s been really well cared for. Q: Can you see Shaker influence in the furnishings? A: I have to think about that. Well, the Shakers are egalitarian. Whereas, Nakashima was more interested in the individual. This is what is unusual about the chapel. It s an organic whole. Nakashima was the first craftsman who can be called organic. He is very close to the inherent nature of the material. For him it was literal, and you can see this in the chapel. It s very restrained and communal, and it fits perfectly into the site. Q: In terms of the actual workmanship and the wood, what is your feeling? A: The joinery of the wood is particularly beautiful and reflects his Japanese aesthetic very well. Q: Do you have one favorite piece in the chapel? A: Yes. The crucifix with the canopy above. It s very complex. It s almost like a shoji screen, lying horizontally. Q: The chapel has been a spiritual gathering place for the Sisters since it was built in the early 1960s. It was originally the chapel for the novices. It is used to this day for daily prayer by many of the Sisters, including a Taize Prayer for Peace that we hold the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. We encourage people to come and pray and visit the chapel. One last question, is there a spiritual leader or group or place that has had a particular impact on your life and career? A: I ve never been asked that! I think spirituality evolves over time. I d have to say Thomas Merton. I ve read all his letters. He was somewhat of a mystic. Also, growing up, my parents operated a hotel in Farmington, near Nemacolin, called the The Gorley s Lake Hotel. Eventually, they sold the property to the New Meadow Bruderhof who were committed to living in community and to living peacefully. I spent time in my childhood around them, and their way of life was very attractive to me, and I greatly admire them. Lynda Waggoner examined the condition of the altar screen in Queen of Peace Chapel and provided Julia Trimarchi Cuccaro with advice on maintaining the beauty of the chapel s walnut furnishings

16 Sister Barbara Ann Smelko coordinates Books for Babies, a volunteer ministry that promotes literacy by providing books for newborns at two Western Pennsylvania birthing centers. The retired sisters at Caritas Christi and Seton Hill University students gather monthly to package baby books and educational resources, which are then delivered to the hospitals by United Way of Westmoreland County. Jan Gebicki, Director of Education for the United Way of Westmoreland County (far right), presented the Children s Champion Award to the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill for their tireless support of our children s programming and their countless volunteer hours dedicated to the United Way s Books for Babies program.
