V S 1X N A T The following methods apply against NAT 1-level suit opening bids. Here we include all 1m that promise 3-c suit, as well as 1m that could be 2-c but only if strong (17+). If 1m can be short and weak see Mini-Minor module. (We may always agree to switch methods at the table.) OVERCALLS A 1-level overcall could be fairly weak if opening strength, it is considered to have extras. A 2-level overcall is sounder usually opening values and a good suit. When V, preferably a 6-c suit, or at least not 5332 and MIN. In 4 th seat, more emphasis is placed on suit quality and distribution than on hcp, especially after strong bids by RP, when overcalls may be more lead-directing or suggesting a sacrifice. Responses Raises Raises are PRE - a jump shows about 4-7 useful hcp with 4+ support. 2NT after a 1M overcall is always Jacoby (INV+). When jumping, either 4-c support or 3-c support with some distribution. After (1 ) 2 (DBL/2 ), 2NT is also Jacoby. A 2-level CUE is often based on 3-c support and about 9-12 (or more but flat). A 3-level CUE in OP s suit always shows support. When jumping or when 2NT Jacoby is available, 4-c support and about 8-10 hcp, otherwise 3+ and INV+. A non-jumping CUE above 3M (after an overcall in M) is a raise that creates a forcing situation. A double jump to 4nm shows a void. After a 1M overcall, so does a single jump to 3RP s suit or 4OP s suit (else 2NT). After a 2m overcall, all jumps in OPP s suits (including RP s suit) are SPL, INV+. Whenever RP bids, a single jump below game in a new suit is fit-showing usually 4-c support and a decent 5-c suit STAM Defense 1.0 Page 3
NT responses 1NT is positive about NT is Jacoby after 1M or (1 ) 2, NAT F1 after overcalling 2m (unless by a passed hand). (1 ) 1 (p) 2NT is NAT NF. New suit after a 1-level overcall AD s non-jumping suit bids are NAT F1. 1-over-1 promises only a decent 4-c suit. OC s CUE shows extras but no convenient NAT rebid. OC s jump raise to 3M is usually based on 4-c support and about opening strength. With a stronger raise, OC drives to game. AD s jumping suit bids are NAT FG. New suit after a 2-level overcall AD s non-jumping suit bids are NAT F1. Continuation as if OPP opened 2X. AD s jumping suit bids below 3NT are NAT FG with a very good suit. AD s jumping suit bids above 3NT are CTL, setting OC s suit. CUE AD s CUE in OP s suit is F1, often including support. By a passed hand, it guarantees support. OC s rebid of his suit denies extras. OC s new suit or 2NT is F1 (promising extras if bypassing OC s suit), a return CUE shows extras but no convenient NAT rebid. AD s rebids: new suit is NAT F1, support and 2NT are NAT INV. After RP s bid AD s new suit is NF. AD s DBL is T/O (but lead-directing if RP s bid was ART). AD s 2-level CUE in RP s suit is ART, INV+ with support (3-c after 1M overcall). AD s 2-level CUE in OP s suit shows a good raise if OP showed a 4+ suit, else it is NAT. After our 1M and RP s T/O DBL, TRF is used from 1NT through 2-below-X STAM Defense 1.0 Page 4
After a balancing or 4 th seat overcall (1m) pass (1M) 2M is NAT (but two-suited when Mini-Minor applies). 2NT is NAT, not Jacoby. No TRF after a 1-level overcall and OP s T/O DBL. If OP rebids, DBL by AD is card-showing. After TRF responses When RP bids TRF to a 4+ M, 1M is NAT but 2M shows a two-suiter with the highest suit. DBL is T/O of the suit(s) OPP have shown. When RP bids TRF to 1NT, we focus on the Majors. DBL is T/O, 2 ART with at least 5-4 (2 asks for longest), 2 shows a weak overcall in one M, 2M are constructive overcalls. DOUBLE T/O. Minimum depends on distribution, vulnerability and which suit is opened. With , 10 hcp is enough to double 1 ; with , a double of 1 should contain 14 hcp. Responses AD s CUE AD s only F response. Guarantees a rebid, unless by a passed hand. FG except for: a raise below game, AD s 2NT, AD s preference to 3m. With a minimum, doubler bids 2M rather than 3m, even with 4-5. Doubler s jump shows a 6-c suit and slam interest. Jump in a new suit A jump to the 2-level shows about 8-10 hcp if the suit is only 4-c. With a 5-c suit, a good 6 hcp is enough. Higher jumps are somewhat stronger, including double jumps. A jump to game is based on a long suit, good distribution and about 8-11 hcp. After all jumps, doubler s bid in a new suit or NT is FG. Doubler s CUE is F1 AD s direct rebid in his suit may be passed STAM Defense 1.0 Page 5
NAT NT bids After T/O of 1m/, 1NT is NAT with about 7-10 hcp and (preferably) a stopper. Doubler s suit rebids are FG, except for 2m. A jump to 2NT shows - regardless of opening bid - about hcp with at least one stopper. All doubler s rebids are FG. Minimum responses With a weak hand (not planning to rebid voluntarily), tend to prefer a 4-c M before a longer m. With both M, tend to prefer 1. Doubler s raise usually shows about 17 hcp. It may be somewhat weaker with good distribution, or if OP rebids, or after RP s RDBL. Doubler s rebid in a new suit is strong, usually at least 17 hcp also in a suit bid by RP. Exception: 2 after (1M)-DBL-(p)-2 neither promises or denies extras. Doubler s cheapest NT rebid shows about hcp. Doubler s jump to 2NT shows about hcp. Doubler s CUE is ART, F1 promises a rebid, except when AD rebids his suit. After a CUE, doubler s new suit is FG, except when doubler or AD rebids his first suit. After doubler s repeated T/O, LEB may apply - see general principles. After T/O of 1 1NT is ART, negative, with less than about 6 hcp, so 2m (if necessary on a 3-c suit) and 2 show about 6-10 hcp possibly less with a good suit. Over 1NT, doubler may rebid 2 with at least a 4-c suit to try to land in a suit contract. 1NT is treated as a minimum response, but as positive responses do not promise all that much, so are they. After RP s bid AD s free 1- or 2-level bid may be competitive and is treated as a minimum response. AD s free 3-level bid sets up the same F situations as a jump response. DBL of RP s suit response (NAT or ART) shows that suit. After RP s 1X, AD s 2X CUE is NAT. AD s CUE in OP s suit is ART (unless Mini-Minor applies) and promises a rebid (except by a passed hand). After RP s raise to 2X, (ART or not), LEB is used, and DBL is responsive. (If one M is unbid, it denies that suit, but may be 4-4 in M if both are unbid.) After an ART raise, a 2-level CUE is a T/O DBL (LEB applies), but a 3-level CUE shows a two-suiter STAM Defense 1.0 Page 6
After RP s ART 1X, DBL shows X only when 1X was strong (10+), else T/O of shown suit(s). A CUE in a 4-c suit shown by RP is NAT. After RP s 2X TRF, a CUE in RP s suit a T/O DBL. A CUE in OP s suit shows a two-suiter. After RP s RDBL AD s suit bid is for the moment only a preference (with good distribution if a jump). A NT bid is to play, emphasising a very good stopper rather than hcp. With a good hand, AD tends to CUE directly (does not promise a rebid) or pass. After a 4 th seat double AD s 1NT is wide-range, indicating a misfit rather than strength or stoppers. AD s 2NT (whether jumping or not) is NAT INV - about 10 hcp. If OP rebids, AD s DBL is card-showing. Balancing double AD s CUE is F1, but doubler s non-jump suit bids are now NF, as are AD s suit bids. Doubler s 2NT is ART FG suits and a non-stopper are shown up-the-line. Doubler s jump (5+ suit) and return CUE (three-suited) are FG. If OP rebids, AD s DBL is card-showing STAM Defense 1.0 Page 7
NOTRUMP OVERCALLS 1NT shows about hcp. Continuation see 1NT methods, passed hand modifications. If RP bids, the same methods are used as after our 1NT opening. (Thus DBL of 2X/3m is T/O.) Balancing (11)12-16 hcp, does not promise a stopper (except with over 1m). By a passed hand: NAT with hcp. Continuation: As after our 1NT opening with passed hand modifications. Exceptions: Over AD s 2 : With 11-14, OC shows an unbid M or bids 2. With 15-16, OC rebids 2NT with a stopper, else 2 OPP s M. Now AD s 3 ASKs for M, AD s 3 / are TRF, AD s 3 shows either 5 spades & 4 hearts (after 1m opening) or both minors (after 1M opening). AD s 2NT is INV opposite and may contain a 4-c M. OC s 3 ASKs, and AD bids the suit below his M (in order to put OP on lead). Balancing 2NT with a stopper. Continuation as after (1X) pass (pass) 1NT; (pass) 2 (pass) 2NT. JUMP OVERCALLS A jump to the 2-level is PRE - a decent 6-c suit and about 6-10 hcp. VUL vs NV, close to opening strength. NV opposite a passed hand, a good 5-c suit may be enough. AD s raises are PRE, and a CUE shows support, INV+. AD s new suit is NAT F1. AD s 2NT is F1 (INV+, NAT or support). Over 2M, OC may bid 3nm NAT, 3M MIN, 3OM MAX with some SPL, 3NT/4M MAX without SPL. Over 2, OC may bid 3 MIN, 3x SPL (extras above 3 ), 3NT MAX without SPL Balancing Constructive - at the 2-level, about 11-14; at the 3-level, about 5-5½ losers STAM Defense 1.0 Page 8
TWO-SUITED OVERCALLS A CUE or a jump to 2NT shows a constructive two-suiter (at least 5-5). 2X shows the two highest-ranking suits. In 2 nd hand only. 2NT shows the two lowest-ranking suits. 3X shows the top and bottom suits. In 2 nd hand only. After 2X AD s bids in OC s suits or the cheapest bid in the remaining suit are NAT, NF. AD s 2NT is ART, F1 (INV+). OC s rebid in his lowest suit shows a minimum and is NF. OC s bid in the remaining suit is seminat (Kx or better). If below his lowest suit, it does not promise extras, but it is F1. Now AD s rebid in the lowest suit is NF. OC s rebid in his higher suit is FG with a 6+ suit. OC s repeated CUE is FG with CTL, but denies 6 cards in his higher suit. OC s 3NT is FG but denies a CTL in OP s suit. After 2NT, AD s rebid in OC s higher suit is a S/T. AD s direct CUE is ART, FG. A later CUE or bid in the remaining suit sets the lower suit. After 2NT AD s CUE is ART, FG. A later CUE or bid in the remaining suit sets the lower suit. AD s 3nM is ART, FG, but is treated as NAT. A later CUE suit sets the higher suit. AD s 4nM is NAT. OC s 3NT rebid promises a stopper. After 3X AD s CUE is an ART slam try, setting the lower suit. AD s bid in the remaining suit is an ART slam try, setting the higher suit. If OPP DBL an ART two-suited overcall: Pass is usually weak (OC s RDBL shows extra length in the most uneconomical suit), a bid in one of OC s suits shows a few values, and RDBL invites OC to compete further. This applies even if the opening bid was ART STAM Defense 1.0 Page 9
4 th seat two-suiters When RP has bid 1NT (or an ART bid that does not promise any suit), a 2NT and CUE show two-suiters - 2NT the two lowest, CUE including the highest. After 1-over-1 or 2-over-1, 2NT shows a constructive two-suiter with the remaining suits. After 1-over-1, a CUE in RP s suit is NAT. But after TRF to 1M, 2M shows a two-suiter. After (1m)-pass-(2m), 2NT shows 5-c om and at least 4-c hearts - a later 3 is INV with 5-5. After (1M)-pass-(2M), 2NT shows both minors (at least 54) and denies interest in OM. Balancing seat two-suiters A CUE shows at least 5-5 with two of the unbid suits, including the highest STAM Defense 1.0 Page 10
V S 1NT (N A T) The following methods are used when OPP open 1NT. They are also used after 1-1 (1NT), when RP is considered a passed hand (so DBL shows one minor). They are not used after their other 1NT overcalls. DOUBLE 2 nd in hand, DBL shows at least as much as their minimum, but not less than 12 hcp. When balancing, DBL may be somewhat weaker. DBL by an originally passed hand shows an overcall in a minor. RP escapes AD s DBL is T/O with 2-3 trumps. Direct bids are according to LEB. AD s pass is weak or a limited PEN (NF), and now a repeat DBL is T/O. When we pass a DBL for penalty and OPP run, a direct double is PEN while a balancing DBL is OPT with 3+ trumps. After an ART pass/rdbl by RP, AD s direct 2X is INV stronger than pass followed by 2X. AD s pass is waiting rather than a penalty pass, so his later DBL is T/O. After RP s NAT pass AD will often pass when BAL, unless preferring to look for a VUL game. AD s 2 is ART, asking for 5-c M, usually with INV+ strength. Doubler bids 2 or 2M with normal strength, 2NT or 3X (5+ suit) with extras (FG). Over 2, RP s 2M is F1 with 4+ suit. Over 2NT, RP s 3 is Stayman. AD s 2 is PUP-2. Doubler breaks TRF (NAT) with substantial extras (2NT is FG). AD s 2M or 3X is NAT, INV. Doubler s rebid is NAT, FG. AD s 2NT shows 5-5 minors, weak or intending to rebid. These methods are also used after a balancing DBL. After RP s NAT RDBL AD s pass may be weak without a suit. 2X shows a 5-c suit and at least distributional values STAM Defense 1.0 Page 11
ASPTRO 2 2 a two-suiter with at least four hearts. a two-suiter with at least four spades. With both M, show the shorter/weaker first. With 5-5 and about equal suit quality, bid 2 followed by 2 with decent cards, 2 followed by pass with a weak hand, 2 followed by a raise with a strong hand. AD gives preference between an assumed 4-5 in the M and his own shortest suit. Relay is ART and shows preference for the second suit. Thus 2M usually means 4-c support, but may be 3-c with shortness elsewhere. A bid in another suit shows a long suit, NF. AD s 2NT is F1. OC bids his second suit (3NT with both m), but with minimum, 5-c M and a 4-c m he bids 3M (NF). OC should jump to game with long OM and extras. Over the relay, OC usually passes with 5-c support or rebids his longest suit. A raise is INV. OC s 2NT shows a three-suited hand with both m. If 2m is doubled, pass shows a preference for that minor, should partner have it (replaces the ART relay). 2M is as above; a new suit (including the relay) is NAT, and RDBL shows a twosuiter outside the anchor suit and the suit bid. Over AD s pass, OC s RDBL shows the most inconvenient suit with tolerance for the relay suit. If third hand bids over 2m, AD s new suit is NAT, NF, and DBL asks OC to bid his longest suit. When available, 2NT is INV+ with at least 3-c support in M. 2M OVERCALLS AD s 2NT is F1. OC may bid 3m (NAT), 3OM (MAX some SPL), 3M (MIN) or 3NT/4M (MAX without SPL). 2NT (TWO-SUITED) Either just an overcall with 5-5 in the minors or any very strong two-suiter. AD normally gives preference between the minors. Without that minor, OC bids the lowest of two touching suits (or 3NT ART FG AD s 4 asks for the lowest suit). With that minor, OC may jump in his M or raise with both minors. If AD wants to force, he bids 3M (NAT or values). OC is assumed to be weak and will bid NAT. JUMP OVERCALLS Sound PRE (but INV when 1NT is at most 12 hcp) STAM Defense 1.0 Page 12
AFTER NAT RESPONSES TO 1NT DBL is T/O. 2NT shows 54 in the two lowest unbid suits (but is NAT when 1NT is at most 12 hcp). AFTER ART RESPONSES TO 1NT DBL is lead-directing (but similar to a 2 nd hand DBL when 1NT is at most 12 hcp, unless the ART response is at least INV). 2NT shows 5-5 in the two lowest unbid suits (but is NAT when 1NT is at most 12 hcp, unless the ART response is at least INV). A 2-level CUE (after TRF) is a sound T/O DBL LEB applies. A 3-level CUE (after TRF) shows 5-5 with the highest unbid suit. A jump to 4m shows a two-suiter according to general rules (see vs PRE) STAM Defense 1.0 Page 13
V S 2X A N D H I G H E R (N A T) The methods described below are used when 2X is NF. They also apply vs NF 2X responses to opening bids (except for 2NT after 1X-2X or 1NT-2X). OVERCALLS NAT, sound, about 11 to 17 hcp. NV or with good distribution, they may be shaded. A non-jumping 4nm is NAT, often including a 4-c M. Responses AD s new suit or 2NT is NAT, F1. OC s bid in a new Major, 2NT or OPP s suit is F1. A rebid of his suit or in a new minor is NF. All later raises, rebids, preferences or NT bids are NF. AD s jump in OP s suit or below game in a new suit is CTL. Any jump by a passed hand is SPL. DOUBLE DBL is T/O through 3, then OPT. Over OPT, when in doubt AD tends to bid rather than pass. DBL of 4 promises at least 3-c spades. Responses After T/O of 2X, LEB is used, but INV responses are somewhat stronger than over (1X) DBL. AD s 4NT (jumping or not) shows the two lowest unbid suits. 2NT OVERCALL 2NT is NAT with about hcp. Continuation - see 2NT methods. JUMP TO 3-LEVEL INV - about 5-5½ losers. 3NT OVERCALL NAT - about hcp after 3X, stronger when with a jump. Continuation - see 3NT methods STAM Defense 1.0 Page 14
TWO-SUITED OVERCALLS A 3-level CUE shows a two-suiter, including the highest unbid suit. It may be either weaker or stronger than the 4m alternatives (see below), especially if it leaves room for 3M. Over 2m/3m, 4 (when jumping or CUE) shows om and a Major, 4 shows both Majors. Over 2M, a jump to 4m shows that minor and OM, NF Over 4m, CUE shows both Majors. 4NT shows om and a Major. Over 4M, 4NT shows any two-suiter. A CUE includes OM, while 5NT shows both minors. When only one of OC s suits is known, AD s bid in one of the other possible suits is P/C. Balancing vs 2M After a balancing T/O of 2M, 2NT is scrambling no clear preference. By balancing we mean that doubler has passed earlier and that partner has not bid. But vs Multi, responses to a belated T/O DBL (could be quite strong) are according to LEB STAM Defense 1.0 Page 15
V S A R T O P E N I N G S Vs 1m ART strong With good opening values and good defensive strength but no great distribution, we may first pass and then act, using our usual defensive methods vs the suit(s) bid by OPP. With weaker or distributional hands, we use NAT overcalls or PRE jumps, both often weaker than vs 1X NAT. DBL shows both majors (usually 5-4), 1NT shows both minors (at least 5-4), and 2NT shows both minors (at least 5-5). After ART responses (strong or weak), DBL of suit bids are lead directing, 1NT (or DBL of 1NT) shows both minors (at least 5-4), and 2NT shows both minors (at least 5-5). For ADV, constructive tools such as CUE, TRF after DBL and fit-showing jumps do not apply. 1NT is a very constructive raise, and 2NT is Jacoby. Vs 1m ART weak (Mini-Minor) When 1m may be shorter than 3-c (without being 17+), we use a module called Mini-Minor. T/O, 1-level overcalls, 1NT and jumps carry the same meaning as vs NAT openings, except for a jump to 2 (5-5 Majors, about 8-11). A jump to 3m is NAT, PRE. After our T/O or overcalls, AD s 2m is ART F unless RP bids. Then, 2m is NAT and DBL is T/O. When RP bids a suit after our overcall, a CUE in that suit is also ART F1. AD s 2NT (after a 1M overcall) and 3m are still INV+ with support. After AD s 1-over-1, OC s 2m is NAT, NF. So is AD s 2m over OC s 1NT rebid. 2m is NAT. AD s 3m is a mild INV. After (1 ) 2, 2 is ART asking, otherwise new suit/nt responses are NAT F-3m. 2NT may contain 4-c M 3M from either is now NAT. 2NT shows a constructive two-suiter (at least 5-5) outside clubs. AD s 3 is relay, and OC s rebids 3X (or 4X) are NF with that suit and the next higher. With a FG hand, OC rebids 3NT with spades and a red suit, 4 with the red suits. AD s 3 / / are pass-or-correct, but 3M promises 3-c and some values. If 2 nd hand passes and RP bids 1X, a CUE in either suit is NAT. If 2 nd hand passes and RP bids 1NT (or TRF to 1NT), we focus on Majors. DBL is T/O, 2 shows at least 5-4 (2 asks for longest), 2 shows a weak overcall in M, 2M is a constructive overcall. This applies whenever OPP bid to 1NT denying a Major. DBL by a passed hand shows one minor STAM Defense 1.0 Page 16
Vs 2m ART strong Same defense as vs 1m. DBL shows both M, 2NT shows both m, jumps are PRE destructive. Vs 2X ART weak (except Multi) As vs 2X NAT, but CUE is NAT (but T/O in their assumed 5-c suit), and LEB is used only when a 5-c suit is assumed. Vs 2m Multi Applies when all weak varieties promise a 5-c major, or when RP responds 2 to 2 Multi. Actions by 2nd hand Pass DBL Too weak for direct action or up to 16 hcp with unsuitable distribution (at most two cards in one Major planning a T/O, when LEB is used). BAL, at least 3-3 Majors, at least 13 hcp, or 17+ with any distribution. After (2m)-DBL-(pass): If pass shows m or one of the Multi-varieties promises 5-c m, pass shows willingness to defend, bids are as if responding to a T/O (including LEB). In other cases, pass is neutral and bids NAT with some strength. Pass followed by a bid is balancing, pass followed by DBL is T/O. After (2m)-DBL/overcall-(P/C bids): DBL is responsive, a CUE NAT. 2M NAT, at most 17 hcp. AD s bid in a new suit is NAT F (including OM). 2NT NAT, NT is NAT, F1 (OC s 3OM is now ART FG). 3m 3M 3NT 4m NAT. AD s 3M shows suit or stopper. NAT, INV (5-5½ losers). NAT. 3NT-methods apply. 5-5 in m and any M, FG. 4 /NT ASKs for the major, 4M is P/C STAM Defense 1.0 Page 17
Actions by 4 th hand after (2m)-pass-(2M) Pass DBL Overcalls 2NT 3NT/4m May be up to 16 hcp with unsuitable distribution (three-suited with shortness in OM planning a T/O, when LEB is used). T/O (12-16) of M or 17+, any distribution. LEB is used. NAT, including 3M/4M , NAT. Our 2NT-methods (modified version) is used. As in 2 nd hand. Vs pass- opening Pass 1 Weak or waiting with unsuitable distribution for overcall/ "T/O". "T/O". Continuation as after (1 )-DBL in the Mini-Minor module. 1X/1NT/2X According to the Mini-Minor module. If 2 nd hand passes and 3 rd hand bids, we act as if the opening pass were 1m ART strong. Vs 1m 0-7 Pass No available opening bid according to our system. Over 1, we could have a 1 opening bid. If we later show opening values, partner knows we have diamonds. DBL Others A 1 opening according to our system. AD responds according to the system. Vs 1, there are two exceptions: AD may pass with diamonds and 8+ hcp, and in the absence of a 1 reply, AD must bid any 0-7 as if he had 8+.
