rising RISING RISING Carthage 2000 Annual Report

How far can you go? On banners around campus, Carthage challenges its students with that question. This annual report portrays three students whose achievements provide an impressive answer. In each, mind, body, and spirit harmonize to form a balanced and sovereign human being. Like their fellow students, they personify the classical ideal of education. Rising from the ground just now, are the Hedberg Library and the N.E. Tarble Athletic & Recreation Center. The College is building these structures in order to build lives. As Carthage students learn and mature, their own ability to lift their communities is rising. We express profound gratitude to all Carthage friends and supporters who are helping the College scale new heights. 2 Carthage

STATE OF THE COLLEGE ADDRESS The theme for last year s State of the College address was building. The emphasis on planning major construction projects was then at its height. Those projects and the attendant renovations of existing facilities will continue to require intense concentration, effort, and new resources for the next several years. The College should emerge from this period with a picturesque campus, incorporating the facilities necessary to support a distinguished educational program well beyond the middle of the twentyfirst century. Not only was it appropriate last year to talk about building, it also will be necessary annually in these State of the College presentations to update the Carthage community on the process of turning architectural dreams into physical reality. Once again, therefore, this report directs attention toward building. As exciting as it is to see new structures and facilities take shape, however, we must remember that they are only a means to a much greater end. Carthage is a teaching college focusing its attention on the intellectual, physical, and spiritual maturation of its students. The people and the educational programs here are what count. So my theme for this year s address is growing. Building Revisited At the time of last year s address, we had announced a few months earlier the magnificent $11 million gift from Pat Tarble for the N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center. The architect was developing the designs for the building, and the College was addressing the details of funding a $22-million project. We also had dreams for a new $14 million library. Indeed, the architectural work for the library had begun earlier and was far ahead of that for the athletic center. We did not have the funds to start the project, however, and the dream of the library remained just that. For many years, Carthage has lived by faith. We proceeded to feature the library along with the athletic center in the College s 1999 Annual Report entitled Building. Within a few weeks came the wondrous commitment by Don Hedberg of $7 million in order to make the library a reality. Now we can say with confidence that, two years from now, Carthage students will be learning and growing in the Tarble Center and the Hedberg Library. Those two landmarks of the future campus unleash a series of projects with far-reaching impact. New classrooms and faculty offices will become available. The Seidemann Natatorium will be remodeled into a second student center. Dining facilities with beautiful vistas overlooking Lake Michigan will emerge. New Carthage 1

Sarah Vokes 2 Carthage She is sensitive to injustices that others do not see. She speaks out for those not strong enough to speak, and those without voices. Sarah Vokes intends to change the world. Since age 13, when she and a group of young women established New Moon Magazine, the world has been listening to Sarah Vokes. In 1999 she was named a Truman Scholar, in recognition of her academic achievements and her commitment to devoting her career to public service. She will use the $30,000 scholarship one of only 65 awarded this year to pursue graduate study in humanities and social sciences. Vokes hopes to focus the world s attention on issues of injustice and discrimination through teaching and advocacy. A double major in philosophy and French, Vokes has a minor in women s/gender studies. Vokes is active as a member of student government, honors council, foreign language honorary Alpha Mu Gamma, leadership honorary Omicron Delta Kappa, campus environmental advocacy CURE, the student gender issues collective STINGRAY, the Carthage Chamber Orchestra, and ALLIES, a support group for all sexual orientations. Her activism and influence extend beyond Carthage. Through summer work with Lutheran Disaster Response she has helped bring comfort to children who have survived tornadoes and flooding in Minnesota. As a member of Cumbaya Youth Ministry she supports and inspires church youth in Kenosha and Racine, Wis. Through travels in China, France and India, Vokes has observed other cultures and their struggles with many of the same problems faced in this country. To be able to change the world, you must first be able to change the way you think, says Vokes. The philosophy curricu-

mind residence facilities, a new style, will appear. All these projects the College is firmly committed to under the terms of the bond issue last spring, and they will be completed within three years. All told, Carthage has embarked on a $45 million building and renovation program. Carthage celebrated the addition of a major new asset to the campus at Homecoming. The Smeds Tennis Center, with its Racquet Club, viewing deck, and ten new courts, gives Carthage the best tennis facility of any small college in the Midwest, and possibly the entire country. The generosity of Ed and Alice Smeds has provided a major asset both for the College and for the surrounding communities. Last May, we also announced a gift from Dave and Gael Romoser, which will enable Carthage to install artificial turf on Art Keller Field. The turf is a new product that virtually duplicates natural grass, but that can survive the intense usage that the football and soccer teams give to the field each autumn. Even these plans do not exhaust the needs and dreams for the future campus. The Straz Center with a new theatre and a new teaching-learning center for Business and the Social Sciences can become the premier academic facility on campus. Lentz Hall requires an external facelift and major internal surgery to give it an appeal and a vitality comparable to the rest of the campus. Straz, Lentz, and new student living and parking facilities bring the total bill for campus projects to $70 million. That is a lot of money, but the futures of Carthage students are worth a lot more. Ultimately, they are the only investment that counts, and they justify our full commitment. Carthage is launching a special new fund-raising campaign among the friends and supporters of the College. The extraordinary generosity of major benefactors has provided us a marvelous opportunity to build for the future. We still need to raise millions of dollars, however, in order to convert dreams to reality. It is essential that benevolence begin at home, if we are to succeed in persuading outside foundations and corporations to make grants to the College. For that reason, all members of the faculty and staff will be asked to participate in the campaign at a giving level appropriate for their personal circumstances. lum at Carthage taught me how to think, not what to think. She credits professors Greg Baer, Ann Gunkel, Bill Kuhn, Dan Magurshak, Bill Miller and Chris Renaud with help- ing sharpen her intellect by encouraging her to dig more deeply into issues for which she has passion, and challenging her to assess candidly her way of looking at the world. My attraction to conflict is still a big part of my personality and identity, but I ve learned when it is important to argue, and how to pick my battles, says Vokes. I m genuinely interested in understanding and breaking down barriers between political sides, and creating change from common goals. Carthage 3

Kim Deaton 4 Carthage Three-time NCAA All-American track athlete Kim Deaton didn t plan to compete in college athletics. She began participating in high school volleyball, basketball, softball and track to steal some thunder from her brother, a football and wrestling standout. After graduation she planned to attend a state college in Illinois and devote herself to her studies. Carthage track coach Steve Ray had other ideas. When Deaton soared 16 feet in Illinois sectional long-jump competition, he intensified his efforts to recruit her for the Carthage squad. At the last track meet of my high school career, Coach Ray asked me how I would feel if I could have achieved something significant in college athletics, but didn t take advantage of the opportunity, says Deaton. I couldn t get that out of my mind. Deaton s eventual enrollment at Carthage strengthened a family bond with the College. Her father, Keith, is a 1973 graduate, and an uncle, Craig, 72, a Carthage trustee. Deaton has excelled both on the track and in the classroom. A chemistry and mathematics major with a 3.9 gradepoint average, she plans to pursue a doctorate in chemistry, then embark on a research and teaching career. In addition to her designation as an athletic All- American, Deaton has won academic All-American recognition from both the NCAA and GTE. Deaton says that along with her coaches, Carthage professors Chris Blaine, Tim Eckert, Kevin Morris, Aaron Trautwein and Mark Snavely have played pivotal roles in her success, particularly Blaine. Chris Blaine is my hero, says Deaton. She shows unbelievable toughness in the classroom, making

The future campus will support a full-time student body of 1,700-1,800, as compared with the current 1,500. That marginal increase in size should bring the College to a more efficient operating level, and allow Carthage to offer its students new programmatic opportunities. Carthage remains firmly committed to its role as a small, teaching college, where the focus on the individual creates both greater challenges for personal success and more profound support for students growing toward responsible roles in their communities. We build toward that future with the momentum of the growing strength of recent years. Since 1987, freshman student applications to Carthage have tripled to more than 2,000 annually. The College has operated every year since 1988 with budget surpluses. In that time, the endowment has grown from less than $10 million to $37.6 million as of last June 30th. Faculty salaries have risen to highly competitive levels among private colleges. Through most of the 1990s, tuition increases have been held at or below the national average, and now have fallen below four percent annually. Carthage is providing value, great value, for the students, professors, and donors who, in their own ways, invest in the College. A lot of building has taken place. There is a lot more to come. Growing Foreseen In my autumn report to the Trustees of the College, I wrote: The 153rd academic year at Carthage has begun smoothly. There appears to be a growing sense of community oriented around the new directions the College has taken over the past decade. By no means is there a unanimity of opinion on virtually any issue, but if there were, Carthage would have a dubious intellectual environment. Still, we are enjoying a level of harmony that is relatively unusual in academic settings. As a group of people, the College community has shared a broad range of emotions from sadness to joy, while our members continue to experience the cycle of life. Our lives here at Carthage often remind me of the city at peace depicted on the shield of Achilles in the Iliad, and the routine of productive life that city portrays. Since you last met in May, we have had births, marriages, discoveries of us work harder than we ever thought possible. Her tough love makes us demand more of ourselves, and those lessons apply to every facet of life. As she contemplates the possibility of becoming a fourtime member of the All-America team, and a life in academe, Deaton credits her Carthage experience with instilling in her greater self confidence, toughening her resilience during adversity, and increasing her organizational skills. I now have a pretty good idea of what it takes to succeed at the highest levels in scholarship and athletics, and how to carry the weight of my expectations and those of others. I expect to win. 8 DeQuan Kuntu 6 Carthage His great, great, grandfather was King of an Efanti tribe in Ghana. You might say he was destined to lead. Yet, according to DeQuan Kuntu, his leadership achievements grow from deep spiritual roots and the structure of the Lutheran church, rather than ancestral entitlement. Kuntu experienced a spiritual awakening as a fourth grader through his participation in an after-school church program. Singing and acting in that program helped him open up to others, exposing his poise and self-confidence. A dozen years later, Kuntu spends vacations teaching math, reading and liturgical dance to children in a similar church youth program, working with the pastor who earlier nurtured his emerging sense of identity. Along the way, he has served in increasing responsible roles within the Evangelical Lutheran in America (ELCA) Youth Organization, culminating with a recently completed two-year term as a youth representative to the ELCA Council. Kuntu s ability to influence others and build supportive communities has flourished at Carthage. He has served as Residence Life Council representative, and was elected by his peers to speak at the 1999 Aims of Education Convocation. He spoke on behalf of students at the dedication of the Fritsch Mediation Chapel, developed a diversity-training program for resident assistants, and organized Black History Month activities. He is a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, and a vice president of Pi Sigma Epsilon, the national sales and marketing fraternity. He is a four-year member of Carthage s Gospel Messengers. Now a marketing and business administration major aiming for a career in pharmaceutical sales, Kuntu points to Vice for Enrollment Brenda Poggendorf, and

spirit significant others and dissolution of relationships, grave illnesses, and death. Through it all, we have contributed significantly to the education of the next generation. In my opinion, there is nothing more important. With a record full-time enrollment of 1,528 students this year, Carthage has its best opportunity to fulfill its mission as a teaching college. The quality of the faculty reinforces confidence in the education offered here. Again this year, the College has demonstrated its capacity to attract new faculty members of exceptional talent. Even though the total size of the faculty has held steady through most of the 90s, retirements and resignations have enabled the College to recruit a new generation of talent. This year, five new tenure-track scholar-teachers have joined the faculty, in addition to several assistant professors on term appointments. Dean Piepenburg has authorized seven tenure-track searches this autumn for people who would join the faculty next September. Besides the advertised national searches, we are identifying an occasional faculty candidate through personal networks. Just as in the formal searches, the objective is to recruit truly exceptional scholars, whose presence on campus significantly could reinforce the academic quality and prestige of the College. The process of growing at Carthage could profit from selective expansion of the educational opportunities here. In the academic curriculum, the reinforcement of Classics would underline the College s dedication to authentic learning. The addition of a neuroscience program would transcend the boundaries of psychology and biology, and better prepare Carthage students for their graduate and medical school studies. The introduction of a paleontology program would inject excitement into the curriculum and exploit collaborative research opportunities here in the Midwest. In the co-curriculum, the sharpening of student minds would result automatically from the further development of the Model United Nations and debate programs. Carthage alumni would profit in their graduate or law school studies from such experience. Music offerings at Carthage still have potential awaiting realization. The expansion of the Carthage Choir would heighten the cultural sensitivities of a larger number of s t u d e n t s, and nourish the richness of the sound of the choir. The range of music opportunities at Carthage has never been greater, Heritage Studies program assistant Felicia Blasi as instrumental in his success at Carthage. Poggendorf helped Kuntu develop a scholarship package that would put a Carthage education within his reach, and many times provided a listening ear. Blasi recruited Kuntu to be her student facilitator during the Carthage orientation program for incoming students. Kuntu supported twenty students, tracking their successes and frustrations, and supporting them during their adjustment to college life. Of the twenty students that were a part of Kuntu and Blasi s 1998 class, all twenty remain enrolled. Seeing those students triumph over their circumstances and having a chance to achieve their dreams, that makes me feel proud. Carthage 7

and the recruitment of a larger number of students would improve further the quality of performances, in general.in athletics, the Smeds Tennis Center provides an opportunity to raise the tennis program to a new level of achievement. I shall be appointing a task force to recommend the best ways in which the new facilities can be used for the maximum benefit of the College and its students. The Tarble Center will open new opportunities for intercollegiate competition in men s volleyball and women s water polo. Whether the focus is on intercollegiate, intramural, or recreational activity, Carthage remains committed to fostering sound minds in sound bodies. Finally, the process of growing is encouraged by the stimulus of distinguished visitors to the campus. Now in its third year, the Carthage Chamber Music Series promotes the cultural sophistication of Carthage students and demonstrates to every listener what true artistry can accomplish. Carthage needs to bring provocative visitors to campus who will challenge our comfortable attitudes. These are ways to enhance the life of mind, body, and spirit at this college. New departures must never divert attention or resources from important existing programs. The introduction of new initiatives while the College and its students are growing, however, can reinforce the strengths Carthage already has built. In Conclusion There is little opportunity for boredom at Carthage these days. The College has embarked on an ambitious strategy that permeates every aspect of its existence. For the next five years at least during this transition period we shall have to work smart and smarter still. We must be sharp in our analysis of opportunities and challenges, and effective in our actions. The rewards awaiting us are superlative. In these years, our generation is repositioning the College for what it can and will become in the twenty-first century. Ultimately, we are focusing on the calibre of life of future Carthage students and graduates. Their mental, physical, and spiritual harmony, while performing at a high level of achievement, should inspire us to our best efforts on their behalf. One of my favorite sayings is, Thank God, who matched us with this hour. I hope that is the way all members of the Carthage community feel. Carthage 9
