1 NONREPRESENTATIONAL SHAPES DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: Students create watercolor paintings using nonrepresentational shapes and watercolor techniques. PROBLEM TO SOLVE: How can nonrepresentational shapes create a balanced composition? 2 INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TEACHER Introduces Kite Angles by Margaret Tompkins and Going Through the Motions by Adriene Cruz and/or Mallarme s Swan by Robert Motherwell. Introduces nonrepresentational shapes as focus in art. What shapes do you see? How did the artists organize these shapes? What role did repetition play in the artist s organization? (repetition provides unity) What shapes did the artist repeat? STUDENT Analyzes the shapes in the artworks. Introduces watercolor techniques/demonstrates masking and glazing (see Skills and Techniques on next page) We re going to practice two watercolor techniques before we use them to make art. Masking is a technique which allows you to create an area of distinct Masking defines sharp, clean edges. Masking also defines shapes around the masking. When masking be sure to paint from the taped area inward. Glazing is a process of overlapping one transparent color over earlier color after the first color has dried. This creates a transparent equation of complex colors. It allows original shapes to show, even while making new Demonstrates selecting shapes for a practice color pencil drawing. Using at least two colors of colored pencil, select and place two different shapes on your composition. Then choose one of the two shapes and repeat it in another part of the composition. This shape could partly overlap the other shape you created. Now use a different color to draw more Repeat at least one of them again. This should give you a conceptual idea that will inform your painting. Practices masking and glazing. Embedded Assessment: Criteria-based selfreflection Draws a practice drawing that reflects selection and organization of Embedded Assessment: Criteria-based selfassessment Demonstrates using the preliminary drawing to inform a final painting. Work with wet paint on dry paper. When you mask out your shapes you have the opportunity to change the scale from the original drawing, or to change the placement. Be sure if you want to show a vertical edge that you consider if it is aligned with the paper boundaries. Load up your brush and paint from the tape to the center, and then quickly from the other side to the center. You can control the color intensity by the amount of water added to the paint pan. Let your paint dry. When the painting is completely dry, carefully remove the tape. Now you are ready to glaze by overlapping another transparent layer. Select an area for another shape seen in your preliminary drawing. Tape the new shapes, they may overlap an existing shape(s). Carefully tape on this painted surface. Paint over the masked areas. You should have a clear idea of the new colors you hope to create based on your practice drawing. Dry and remove tape. 3 NONREPRESENTATIONAL SHAPES SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES ART STUDIO TIP Watercolor Techniques Masking is used to create hard, defined edges. Be sure to firmly press the edges of the tape down to the paper with your fingernail, in order to assure that no paint seeps underneath the tape. Removing the tape after the paint is DRY is crucial. Pull the tape back upon itself at a low angle close to the surface of the paper with a slow even motion. Paint over the new masked areas with transparent color. This allows original shapes to show, even while making new Let dry before removing tape. 5 Tell Me About Your Art! Dear Sixth Grade Families: Today we organized a composition through NONREPRESENTATIONAL USE OF SHAPES. Looking: We looked at Kite Angles by Margaret Tompkins and Going Through the Motions by Adriene Cruz and/or Mallarme s Swan by Robert Motherwell. Talking: Making: We focused on nonrepresentational shapes (that do not portray a recognizable subject). We identified attributes and math names for shapes that were repeated for compositional organization and unity in the art. We practiced using two watercolor techniques: masking and glazing. Masking helped us to create defined hard-edges Glazing helped us to create more complex colors and shapes by layering one transparent color on top of another. Art at Home Together: You could cut shapes from colored paper, or magazines, and move them around on a rectangle to create a variety of compositional possibilities.
