The EPSRC portfolio: Past, present and future
Overview of this session Past: Power Electronics at EPSRC Present: EPSRC strategy and the Delivery Plan Future: Balancing Capability (and beyond)
Power Electronics at EPSRC
EPSRC portfolio
Where does Power Electronics fit? Power Electronics falls under the remit of several research areas: Electrical Motors and Drives/ Electromagnetics Engineering Microelectronics Device Technology (previously CMOS) ICT Energy Networks Energy Submit your proposal where you feel the greatest novelty lies Contact the relevant Portfolio Manager after submission
Relevant research 28 proposals listed on Grants on the Web as relevant to Power Electronics Automotive Project Partners include Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, Lotus Engineering and Intelligent Energy Ltd Further 18 proposals listed as relevant to electric vehicle, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), power semiconductor, electrical machine or electric motor research
EPSRC strategy and the Delivery Plan
EPSRC s Delivery Plan framework
Productive Nation
Connected Nation
Resilient Nation
Healthy Nation
What is the relevance to you? National Importance (Why) Why should the UK fund your research over another proposal? What is the potential held within the research program proposed? How could the UK benefit from the research being funded? Pathways to Impact (How) can ask for resources for this What are you, as the research team, going to do to increase the impact of the research proposed? How will the appropriate people know of your work? How will you enable the work to pass along the innovation chain?
Vision for EPSRC business engagement Visibility That EPSRC and its investments have high levels of visibility and accessibility for business communities Engagement That EPSRC investments continue to attract high levels of business investment and EPSRC policies and processes aid, rather than hinder, business engagement and investment. Influence That our strategy and investments are influenced by the views of business and that we influence the ways in which business consider and interact with the research base.
Engineering in the new Delivery Plan The vision for engineering capability is to contribute to UK prosperity through engineering research challenges that have lasting academic, societal and economic benefit Safeguarding the long-term sustainability of engineering research through an appropriate balance of discovery-led and strategic research Inspiring current and future leaders of engineering research, actively promoting equality and diversity Balancing capabilities across engineering research areas, building an integrated portfolio that contributes to EPSRC's Delivery Plan
Balancing Capability
EPSRC s strategic vision One vision For the UK to be the best place in the world to research, discover and innovate Two goals Research and Discover Research and Innovate Three strategies Balancing Capability Building Leadership Accelerating Impact
Some considerations Strategic Government interventions and investments over the last four years that will act as a pull Evolution of the EPSRC-funded portfolio over the last four years in specific areas Understanding the scale of the potential opportunity Criticality of EPSRC funding in the wider landscape Financial realities

What s changing? Revised definition of Electrical Motors and Drives/ Electromagnetics research area Electrical Motors and Drives incorporates the design and manufacture of electromechanical systems and their accompanying power electronic drives and controls. It includes the associated research challenges around electromagnetic compatibility, the application of new materials, mechanical integrity, cooling, condition monitoring and future manufacturing processes. It also includes the research area of power electronics, specifically the application of solid-state electronics to the control and conversion of energy between electrical and mechanical domains. Electromagnetics covers the study of electromagnetic interactions in engineering materials and devices, including electromagnetic interference.
Revised strategic focus Relevant to a number of government and industrial strategies Low-carbon economy by 2050 Develop more connected approach across a suite of research topics defined by the community Aim to support the community to maintain focus on people support and strengthen leadership across all career levels Promote continued engagement between researchers and key innovation partners Advanced Propulsion Centre Spokes in Electric Machines and Power Electronics
Thank you Any questions?
