Resonance project and active experiments A. G. Demekhov Institute of Applied Physics, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia M. M. Mogilevsky, L. M. Zelenyi Space Research Institute, Moscow, Russia RBSP SWG Meeting, JHU APL May 23, 2011

Summary Parameters of the Resonance mission Proposed active experiments Cooperation with RBSP

Main topics for the Resonance project Origin of discrete and noise-like emissions and their interrelationship Acceleration and losses of energetic particles by wave-particle interactions Ring current formation and decay Hot and cold plasma interface; subauroral electric fields Magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction

This orbit will provide an opportunity of correlated long-term measurements of the phenomena linked to this flux tube in the generation region and at other points in space and on the ground The orbits of two spacecraft pairs glide for about 2 hours along the same selected magnetic flux tube corotating with the Earth. Magnetosynchronous orbit Project RESONANCE

Active experiments vs Resonance mission Long-term (0.5 3 hr) multi-spacecraft observations in the flux tube conjugated with a heater (HAARP) Any magnetospheric effect of the heater operation (e.g., ULF/ELF/VLF waves, energetic particle modification, cold plasma updraft) can be studied in detail Control of heater operation based on transmitted Resonance data For example, information on natural emissions in the magnetosphere can be useful to choose the modulation frequency Artificial feedback in the magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction? Modulating the ionospheric reflection in-phase with the precipitated electron/proton flux can amplify the relaxation oscillations of the cyclotron instability Problem: we need to be lucky to fit in an active flux tube Question: can we activate the tube we are in?

Scheme of a joint experiment with a ground-based heater 1 Earth, 2 ionosphere, 3 heated ionosphere region, 4 magnetic flux tube, 5 TM line, 6 satellite, 7 trajectories of particles and guided waves Resonance project Artificial feedback experiment
