1 Accessing Census statistics relating to your parish Finding useful statistics relating to your parish is a key element in the process of evidence gathering relating to the production of your Neighbourhood Plan. This quick guide explains how and where you can find this information on the internet. Currently Census data is available online via NOMIS, which is a service offered by the Office for National Statistics, giving people free access to the latest labour market statistics. Unfortunately, at present, only Census 2011 data is available at the parish level. This means that it can prove difficult to analyse trend data for the parish, covering several Census years. 1. Producing a Local Area Report for your parish, based on 2011 Census data Go to On the home page, find the box that says Local Area Report and type in your parish name (or part of the parish name if it doesn t recognise the full name you have entered). Press search and choose the appropriate parish from the list that appears. You will then be presented with your Local Area Report which provides you with a whole range of Census 2011 data for your parish, including population and demographics, living arrangements, ethnicity, types of accommodation, number of cars, employment status, qualifications etc. You can download any or all sections of the report into an Excel table if you wish.

Accessing specific 2011 Census data relating to your parish If you wish to access specific 2011 Census data relating to your parish that doesn t feature in the Local Area Report, for example the distance travelled to work dataset, then you will need to generate a query. Go to and click on 2011 Search by topic (table finder) in the Census Statistics section. At the top of the resulting list, click on show more and then click on Parish/Community. Scroll down the list until you find the dataset that you are interested in and then select it. Alternatively you can use the keyword finder in the left hand window to identify datasets relating to the topic you are interested in.

3 Once you have selected your dataset, you will be taken to the main overview page for that particular data. In order to view a table of the data, as it relates to your parish, you will need to Query data by clicking on this button in the left hand window. You are then taken to a page that enables you to build your query for the dataset you have selected. You can build your query by working your way through the items in the left hand window. Start by clicking on Geography where it says Make selections.

4 Scroll down the list of commonly used areas on the resulting screen and select english parishes / welsh communities by clicking on this item. You will then be presented with a screen where you can select Broadland as the local authority area in order to narrow down the parishes to select from. Do this and then tick your parish within the resulting list. Your parish is now selected. If you wish to compare data from your parish against a broader geographic area, such as the whole of Broadland, Norfolk or the Eastern region, then you can select additional types of areas. Click on Geography once again in the left-hand pane and make your selection from the list. Anything you tick will be added to your resulting table.

5 Once you are happy with the geographic areas you have selected, click on the name of the dataset (in our example Distance Travelled to Work ) in the left-hand pane, below where it says Geography. The resulting screen allows you to state how you would like the data to be presented in your table, i.e. whether you are interested purely in a combined figure or in a particular data range. For example, our selection is distance travelled to work. If we leave the box all categories ticked, and nothing else selected, then the resulting spreadsheet will simply show the total number of people who travel to work within the parish. If we select the various columns that indicate range, however, then the resulting spreadsheet will give us the numbers of people travelling within those various categories (i.e. distances). Choose Tick to select columns or manually tick all of the columns you wish to feature in your results. Next click on Summary of Selections to check what will be presented in your final table of data. If you are happy with this selection then click on Format/Layout to specify how you would like your table to look and what download format you would prefer (the default is Microsoft Excel). When you are happy with this, click on Download Data to download your Excel file.
