6 WHY SEALING HARDWARE? Adverse external environments (rain, submersion, dust, etc.) can enter unprotected equipment and cause equipment failure, process downtime and expensive service calls. Leaks from INSIDE the equipment can reduce equipment performance or cause a loss of valuable process product. Result is costly to all and can ruin the reputation of the equipment manufacturer! 6

7 FASTENER SEALING OPTIONS WHICH WAY TO GO? WET?? Liquid sealant / adhesive DRY?? Tape O-rings and standard screws Flat rubber/deformable washers Self-sealing fasteners DO IT MYSELF OR BUY READY-MADE?? Set up production equipment & train personnel to apply the sealant properly Or buy the fastener with the sealing system already built-in 7

8 WET LIQUID THREAD SEALANTS Requires two or three steps and trained personnel and/or expensive sealant dispenser equipment Preparation (cleaning, etc.) Application Curing time Not ideal for use on fasteners Difficult, if not impossible to remove from the fastener threads for field maintenance or repair Does not seal under the screw head Lacks reusability Possible chemical disposal issues Sealant Dispenser for Screws 8

9 O-RINGS OR WASHERS WITH STANDARD SCREWS O-rings or flat washers with standard screws present problems now and in use How much torque to tighten fully? Too little and the screw will loosen with time; too much and the o-ring or washer will tear Inability to obtain contact of the screw head against the surface results in a rubber mount that is more susceptible to loosening over time (tightening of all screws may be required on a regular basis) Field servicing will require replacement of o-ring or washer 9

10 O-RINGS WITH PROPRIETARY SCREW DESIGN APM Hexseal s proprietary o-ring groove insures easy one-step sealing Groove is formed under the screw head to give a space for the o-ring to compress into, allowing full, 360 degree contact with the mating surface O-ring is compressed only percent, resulting in long o-ring life and re-usability; impossible to overtighten or damage the o-ring Seals to 20,000psi! 10

12 APM HEXSEAL O-RING SYSTEM VARIATIONS APM Hexseal offers a wide range of screw types, sizes and o-rings to suit most every application Screws from #2-56 (M2) to ¼-28 (M6) Hex Head bolts from ¼-20 (M6) to 5/8-11 (M16) Other sizes available on special order Hex head, pan head, flat head (countersunk), rivets and more Drives: slotted, Phillips, 6-lobe ( Torx compatible) and more Screw material: 18.8 stainless steel (similar to ISO A2 grade) Standard screw material complies with US government DFARS stainless steel country of origin restrictions O-ring material: standard is silicone rubber; other materials (Fluorosilicone, Viton, Buna, Neoprene, EPDM) available 12

13 WHICH O-RING MATERIAL TO CHOOSE? APM Hexseal has found, over the years, that silicone rubber will provide the best performance in 95 percent of the applications, but you should ask yourself the following questions: What is the service temperature range expected? Will the equipment be subject to frequent / continuous wetting with petroleum products or other fluids? Will there be high pressure washdowns (what chemicals used)? How often will the fastener be loosened / removed & replaced? 13

15 A CLEARANCE HOLE IS BEST COVER CH PH BASE Making sure that the panel/cover has an adequate clearance hole (CH) provides a space for the o-ring when the fastener is tightened, ensuring that the o-ring is not over-compressed (CH is slightly larger than Pilot Hole (PH)) If the self-sealing fasteners are used to secure a cover that is more than 2-3 threads thick, simply increase the cover through-hole to that specified Smaller is better: too large a clearance hole (CH) will allow the o-ring to be pushed into the hole, resulting in reduced sealing 15

16 THREADLOCKING OPTIONS: STRIP / BAR A strip of threadlocking material is inserted into a groove cut into the fastener threads. Most common material is Nylon 6.6, which allows 15 onoff cycles and is rated for -65 F to +250 F (-54 C to +121 C) Other materials available for a use range of from -450 F to +550 F (-268 C to +288 C) Meets IFI 124, IFI 524 & MIL-DTL-18240, as well as other NAS, AN & MS callouts Best method to use if you require a maximum anti-vibration assembly 16

17 THREADLOCKING OPTIONS: PELLET A pellet of threadlocking material is inserted into a hole drilled into the fastener threads: Most common material is Nylon 6.6, which allows 15 onoff cycles and is rated for -65 F to +250 F (-54 C to +121 C) Other materials available for a use range of from -450 F to +500 F (-268 C to +260 C) Meets IFI 124, IFI 524, MIL-DTL-18240F & NASM25027 A cost effective method to use if you require a high antivibration assembly that meets most industry and military standards 17

18 THREADLOCKING OPTIONS: PATCH A patch of threadlocking material is bonded onto the fastener threads: Most common material is Nylon 11, which allows up to 5 on-off cycles and is rated for +250 F (+121 C) For a wider temperature range (from -70 F to +500 F (-57 C to +260 C)) we use a glass-reinforced Nylon Meets IFI 124, IFI 524 & MIL-DTL-18240F, Type P The fastener is heated and the Nylon powder is sprayed onto the threads The most cost effective, pre-applied threadlocking method to use if you require an anti-vibration assembly that meets most industry and military standards 18

19 SELF-SEALING NUTS SEAL DIFFERENTLY SEELNUTS Seals the mating surface AND the threads Sealing material is molded to a specially made nut Molded Threads Are the Key The molding process creates rubber threads on the sealing end of the nut Offers full sealing of the threads Helps to prevent loosening Full, molded rib seals the mating surface Silicone rubber standard Self-sealing SEELNUTS are ideal for use in applications not suited to sealing screw (mounting of hinges or mounting brackets, etc.) 19

20 GAS AND FLUID-TIGHT SEALING WASHERS Sealing ribs maximize sealing and help seal over irregular surfaces Type 304 stainless steel is standard; other materials available on special order Molded-in sealing material seals the contact surface AND the underside of the securing fastener 20

21 SEELOC SEALING WASHERS Self-sealing SEELOC washers are the only ones that positively seal the mating surface AND the underside of the screw or nut Available to seal fasteners from #6 to ½ inch (M3 to M12) Washer diameters: 0.55, 0.75, 1.0 and 1.5 inches Standard sealing material: silicone rubber Optional black oxide finish 21

22 HEAVY DUTY SEELOC WASHERS Thicker stainless steel produces minimum 50% higher tightening torque and the ability to cover and seal larger through holes without bending. Available in popular sizes. 22
