2 About your French s All products must be installed in accordance with accepted good trade practice (and in accordance with supplied instructions where applicable), and maintained in accordance with these procedures or else the warranty shall be void. Important information We recommend that a competent tradesperson install this product. A single person must never carry out the installation, as some components are very heavy. Care of Timber s and frames on site Please check doors, frame and sill at time of delivery to ensure that they are acceptable and in good condition. If you find a component missing or damaged please inform your supplier immediately. We keep replacement components of most set parts and these can be sent out to you quickly. This will save you having to re-package and return the whole set, and allows you to continue with the project. When storing prior to installation the doors and frames should be kept in their packaging, handled with care and stored in a dry, ventilated building. s and frames should be stored flat on a level surface (not on edge or on end). s should not be stored or fitted in the building until the wet trades such as plastering, painting etc. Have been completed and the room is dried out. The French patio door sets are manufactured using engineered timber components for additional stability. Each frame and door is manufactured with a hardwood core laminated and finger jointed together, faced with Oak LVL Veneer or hardwood veneer. The complete set is pre-machined in the factory, ready to receive the hardware and only requires site assembly and installation into the brickwork opening. Some further adjustment of the hinge cutouts may be necessary as explained in Part 9 of these instructions. Pre-finishing with wood stain / paint The range of patio doors have been factory pre-finished using micro porous wood finish and opaque white paint. Each set receives 3 coats of finish comprising a base coat and 2 top coats. The finish should be regularly inspected every 3 months and recoated when necessary, to maintain the decorative coating and protection of the product. As a general guide white sets have a higher UV Resistance, so should need re-coating less frequently, whereas the Clear finish has more limited UV Resistance and will need re-coating every 3 months to 2 years depending on exposure levels. The properties of timber No two trees produce identical grains or colour of wood and this adds to the beauty of a natural product. We therefore cannot guarantee that all doors and frame components will look exactly the same in grain and colour. Warping of wood is not a defect if it does not exceed 1/4 inch (6mm) in its installed position. Maintaining the doors and frame We suggest additional treatment and finishing may be required at least once a year or sooner if there is any indication of deterioration in the wood protective finish used. Trimming Generally this French Set is not designed to be trimmed on site and should be fitted as supplied. However, packing out or letting in of the hinges may be required. See Part 9 of these instructions. 5 Preparing the site Brickwork opening width = width + 10mm 1 Brickwork opening: When preparing the site please prepare the brickwork opening to be 10mm more in height and width than the outside assembled frame size. It is essential that all 4 internal surfaces of the brickwork be levelled before installation. Please ensure that all dimensions are correct for installation before proceeding, as the set must be installed square and level into the opening. For open OUTWARDS assemble the frame as in Fig 2. For open INWARDS assemble the frame as in Fig 3. Important Note For sets with Mobility Access Cill, DO NOT ASSEMBLE THE FRAME until you have studied the mobility access part of the instructions, as the frame assembly is different than the standard open in and open out models. 6 Assembling the frame HEAD DRIP BEAD INFILL BEAD Fig 3 For open INWARDS DRIP BEAD HEAD INFILL BEAD 2b For open INWARDS Assemble the frame by gluing the Jambs into the Head, using waterproof glue and securing with 3" No 8 Steel Woodscrews provided, through the pre-drilled holes. Use waterproof glue to fix Jambs into the Cill and secure with 3" No 8 Steel Woodscrews provided, through the pre-drilled holes. OUTSIDE INSIDE OUTSIDE JAMB INSIDE Fix the infill bead and drip bead using waterproof adhesive and the stainless steel pins provided. JAMB Ensure the frame is assembled absolutely true and square with a diagonal tolerance of maximum +/- 2mm CILL CILL Installing the assembled frame 3 installing The Into The Brickwork Opening Drill fixing holes as shown in Fig 4. Check that the jambs are vertical from side to side and back to front, using a spirit level and plumb bob. Use spacers or packers to hold the frame in the correct position then fix to the brickwork using frame fixers. Ensure the frame is square, with maximum +/- 2mm on the installed diagonal measurement of the frame, see Fig fixing points Fig French s

7 4 Fitting the hinges First identify 1 (A) Right Hand and 2 (B) Left Hand (which are labelled). When looking from the outside towards the inside, with the frame in the correct open out or open in position: 1 (A) is installed on the Right. 2 (B) is installed on the Left. 8 5 Installing the doors into frame You can select which door is the opening door and which door is the fixed door. Select from the four alternatives shown in Fig 10. Then study steps 6 and 7 before actually fixing the astragal / mullion in position. 9 7 Fitting the locks (i) Assemble the multi point slave lock (MPL) which has the two shoot bolts only, (without centre lock and rhino bolts) and fit it into the machined euro grove in the fixed door, securing the faceplate of the lock, with the screws provided see Fig 11 (ii) Fit the weather seals into the fixed and opening doors, as shown in Fig 10a, then fit the Astragal Mullion to the fixed door, using the M5 80mm screws provided. Fix through the 6 fixing points which correspond with slots in the slave lock faceplate, so the fixing points go into the fixed door stile See Fig 11. The Bumps in the centre of the keep should face in the same direction as the doors open. File the Bumps if necessary to ensure doors close and lock. (iii) Please note, the key hole will require drilling and filing to accomodate the handle adapter, see fig. 12 Important Note: The side of the Astragal / Mullion with the machining for the lock keep should always be facing towards the opening door. 10 Fitting the locks (continued) (iii) Depending on whether the doors open in or out, and which is the fixed or opening door, the centre latch of the lock may need to be reversed. To reverse the latch, fit the spindle through the lock, loose fit a handle and lift the handle upwards so the lock is engaged. In this mode remove the 2 screws from the latch, remove and reverse it, then replace the screws. See Fig 13 (iv) Fit the handles and spindles to both the fixed and opening doors. To operate the lock, lift the handle upwards to its fullest extent, then turn the key. To unlock, turn the key, then press the handle downwards See Fig 14 Fig 13 Fig 14 When a split spindle is used the following procedure may be carried out to ensure correct handing of the nightlatch operation. 1 Lift handle so the deadbolt is fully thrown 2 Remove the sash bolt 3 Locate screwdriver into the screw slot 4 Turn 180 either clockwise or anti-clockwise depending on which side the operating function is required 5 Check the function has been set correctly using split spindle and handle 6 Replace bolt in chosen orientation Fitting the lock keeps and Stormguard slimline cill 8 (i) Fit the Stormguard Cill, on top of the Timber Cill in between the Jambs. The ends of the Cill are cut out to fit around the Jambs of the. Use Silicone Sealant (not supplied) to the underside of the Stormguard Slimline Cill, then fix it to the top of the Timber Cill, using the screws provided, adding a blob of Silicone under each screw head, before tightening. Fig 15 and Fig 16. (ii) Silicone seal around the edge of the Stormguard Cill where it meets the door frame jambs to ensure a waterproof seal. (iii) Fit the Lock Keep onto the Stormguard Cill, over the machined position and secure with two M4 25mm screws in the slots only. Repeat this procedure for the keep which fits into the underside of the frame head. Now hang the doors and if necessary, adjust the keep location until both the slave and master locks operate. Finally, use the additional M4 25mm fixing screws to completely secure the top and bottom keep in postion. Fig 15 and Fig 16. Fig 15 OPEN OUT Fig 16 OPEN IN 10 French s

11 9 Adjusting the fit of the doors Close the doors and check they fit together correctly in the centre, without gaps or without being too tight. If the doors are too tight at the centre, let the hinges into the doors and frames more by carefully enlarging the machined position with a chisel until the doors fit. If the centre gap is too large, pack out the hinges to reduce the gap. 10 assembly for doors with sidelites For open INWARDS For open OUTWARDS French s 11

12 Fitting the sidelites Head Peel back and fold over protective film at each corner Mullion Pull protective film off tape and screw sidelite into position using screws provided Hold bead tightly in position, pull film off tape and press until stuck. 11 Bottom Cill The rebates of the assembled frame are fitted with foam adhesive tape. Turn over the edges of the protective film at the top, bottom and sides of the foam tape. Position the bottom of the sidelite into the groove in the bottom of the frame. Centralise sidelite position. Remove the backing film from the adhesive foam tape, by pulling the turned over corners. Secure the sidelite tight in position using the M5 60mm screws provided. If in exposed location apply sealant around the outside perimeter joint between sidelite and frame. Take the 4 pieces of internal bead and bend over 1 corner of the protective film of the adhesive tape. Place the bead in position, remove the film at the same time as applying pressure, so the tape sticks to the sidelite. Repeat the process for the other 3 pieces of bead. If additional pressure is required use stainless steel pins, taking care not to damage the finish. 12 French s
