3 MASON S BRICK INSTALLATION GUIDE INSTALLATION SUMMARY Your new Mason s Brick skirting comes in 4-1/2 foot long panels that are either 36 inches or 48 inches tall depending on your home and the option you selected. Your skirting comes with a pre-trimmed end and can be installed using one of three basic installation options based on your preferences, local building OPTION A OPTION A The top of the panel attaches directly to the building and the bottom of the panel uses the Style Crest bottom channel system OPTION B OPTION B The top of the panel attaches directly to the building and the bottom of the panel is buried in a ground trench OPTION C OPTION C The panel is supported using the Style Crest vinyl trim component system and the Mason s Brick Top Trim Use in areas affected by frost codes, and home s exposure to frost: TOOLS YOU WILL NEED ALL OPTIONS: Hammer Powered Screwdriver Snips Plumb Line or Level Tape Measure Power Saw with Fine Tooth Blade Chalk Line Utility Knife Straight Edge or Carpenter s Square Heavy Duty Heat Gun OPTION B ONLY: Shovel for Digging Garden Hoe or Rake for Backfilling FASTENERS YOU WILL NEED PART OPTION FASTENER USE NO. Use either a power saw with a fine tooth blade mounted with reverse rotation, aviation snips, or a utility knife to cut Mason s Brick components. 2. 4 PERFORMING THE INSTALLATION OPTION A STEP 1 INSTALL THE BOTTOM CHANNEL Use a level or plumb line to establish the location of the bottom channel. Locate the tall/ backside of the bottom channel directly beneath the outside edge of the home where the top trim back component will be attached (Figure 1). To prevent grass from growing around the skirting, install Style Crest Skirting Saver (part # ) around the base. Attach the bottom channel directly to the ground through the pre-punched holes (Figure 2). Place the ground spikes every 24 inches. Extra holes are provided for convenience. A punch may be used to set the last few inches of the spike. Leave a 1/2 inch gap between each section of bottom channel in order to allow for expansion. FIGURE 1 FIGURE 2 Note: If installation occurs in areas prone to high wind or where ground is spongy and/or has not fully settled, it is recommended that the bottom channel be fastened to treated wooden stakes. If installation occurs on concrete, use 3/4 inch long masonry nail or equivalent or a suitable adhesive in place of the normal ground spike. STEP 2 INSTALL AND ATTACH THE MASON S BRICK PANEL TO YOUR HOME Attach the Mason s Brick panel directly to your home using either the top flange or mortar joint fastening method. THE TOP FLANGE METHOD Simply drive the screws through the flange and into the mating surface on your home. The mating surface should be a trim board or frame piece, but never the vinyl siding itself. The vinyl siding will not provide a significant mounting surface and expands at a different rate than your Mason s Brick panels. It is important to note that the flange can either be tucked behind (Figure 3) or applied outside of the trim on your home (Figure 4). THE MORTAR JOINT METHOD Remove the top flange (Figure 5) and use the mortar joints as a fastening surface. The panel and trim surfaces should overlap by at least 2 inches. 5 PERFORMING THE INSTALLATION OPTION B STEP 1 DIG THE GROUND TRENCH Use a level or plumb line to establish the location of the bottom ground trench. The trench should be located so that the bottom of the Mason s Brick panel will be in alignment with the top of the panel when it is attached to the home. Dig the trench 3-4 inches deep. STEP 2 INSTALL AND ATTACH THE MASON S BRICK PANEL TO YOUR HOME Place the Mason s Brick Panel in the ground trench and trim the bottom (hidden area) to accommodate uneven surfaces. The top of the panel should remain level and true. (Figure 6). Attach the Mason s Brick panel directly to your home using either the top flange or mortar joint fastening method. STEP 2 INSTALL THE TOP TRIM BACK Locate where the top trim back will mount to your home. The bottom edge of the top trim back can extend below the bottom edge of your home if there is a solid support for nailing and a solid bearing for the top trim front piece against the side of the home. Mark a guide line around the home using a chalk line or other method to aid in installing the top trim back. Attach the top trim back to your home by driving screws in the middle of every slot (Figure 12). Leave a 1/16 inch gap between the screw head and the top trim back to allow the piece to expand and contract under normal conditions. The screws should drive 3/4 inch deep into the mounting surface. See the corners section on the last page for instructions on how to install the piece around corners. FIGURE 12 FIGURE 13 STEP 3 INSTALL THE MASON S BRICK PANEL AND MASON S BRICK TOP TRIM Place the bottom of the Mason s Brick Panel into the bottom channel and lean the top of the panel against the top trim back. Install the Mason s Brick top trim (Figure 13) by snapping the top edge into the top trim back lock. The piece should snap into place and lock. The Mason s Brick top trim is notched on one end to permit overlap with the adjoining piece (Figure 14). STEP 4 REFER TO THE LAST PAGE OF THIS GUIDE FOR JOINING PANELS AND CREATING CORNERS FIGURE 14

7 PERFORMING THE INSTALLATION JOINING PANELS, CREATING CORNERS, FRAMING AND VENTILATION JOINING PANELS Your Mason s Brick skirting panels come with a pre-trimmed/flange-less edge (Figure 15), allowing the panels to be joined together in two simple steps: STEP 1 Join two panels by placing the trimmed/flange-less edge on top of the flanged end of the adjoining panel (Figure 16). STEP 2 Attach the two panels together by driving installation screws through both panels at the mortar joint line (Figure 16). FIGURE 15 FIGURE 16 CREATING CORNERS Your Mason s Brick skirting panels have three corner options: MASON S BRICK - FORMED PANEL CORNERS Create corners with your Mason s Brick panels by simply using a heavy duty heat gun and bending around the corner to form into place. Use a table or other surface to create a straight edge. (Figure 17). MASON S COLLECTION 2 CORNER Square cut the ends of the adjoining Mason s Brick panels. Drill pilot holes through the corner cap. Place the Mason s Collection 2 Corner over the corner of two panels and screw into place (Figure 18). TRIM CHANNEL SYSTEM The bottom channel can be notched to form clean looking, attractive corners (Figure 19). The top trim back and the top trim front piece can be simply formed by bending over a rigid edge such as a cutting table or similar surface. FIGURE 17 FIGURE 18 FIGURE 19 FIGURE 20 FRAMING A framing support system (Figure 20) made of treated lumber or other materials should be considered when using skirting taller than 36 inches or where local code requires. VENTILATION Mason s Brick skirting provides a nearly air tight enclosure when installed by itself. The addition of the Style Crest Mason s Brick venting inserts (Figure 21) can add required ventilation to your homes skirting. Each Mason s Brick ventilation insert provides 68 square inches of ventilation. Please consult your local code to determine the correct amount of skirting ventilation for your home. FIGURE 21
