2 TENSILKUT ENGINEERING In 1953, a metallurgist working for a major American company, frustrated by delays in receiving his finished tensile samples from their machine shop, started working on finding a better way to cut his bars, and the Tensilkut was born. Nearly 65 years later, our scope has expanded from flat steel tensile bars to flat, round and notched test specimens made from a wide variety of materials, but the need is the same: test specimens you can make in your lab when you need them. Flat Specimens Round Specimens Notched Specimens Machines for cutting flat bars: Manually operated table and floor models. Basic starter systems. Manually operated, enclosed models with chip shield and other upgrades included Master Templates and Tensilbits for a wide variety of specifications and materials CNC operated, fully enclosed machine with programs written for your specifications. All units designed for use in the lab by techs with no machining experience. Machines for cutting round test specimens: Tensilathe/505 semiautomatic, precision hydraulic tracing lathe. CNC Tensilathe for turning round bars. Programmed in our facility for whatever specifications you need. 3 Jaw chuck included with either lathe; 4 jaw chuck available. Set up for your testing specifications and the materials you use. Easily operated by lab technicians without prior machining experience. 3 TENSILKUT MACHINES FOR PREPARING FLAT TEST SPECIMENS The true accuracy of physical properties obtained from tensile testing of metals and non-metallics is directly dependent on the accuracy and precision of the test specimen. Commercial lab turnaround time can be lengthy, and relying upon a machinist who doesn't operate on your schedule isn't ideal. With the Tensilkut machine located in your lab, your specimens can be prepared when you need them, in accordance with ASTM and other standards. 4 TENSILKUT EQUIPMENT FOR PREPARING ROUND TEST SPECIMENS Round test specimens have long presented special challenges, for obtaining a perfect specimen with its tight tolerances using a conventional lathe is difficult. The Tensilathe/505 and CNC Tensilathe were both designed with an optimal range of feed and speed rates to ensure that the surface finishes on round tensile bars are as smooth as possible, with minimal tool marks, and tolerances of These machines are both easy to learn to use, having been designed for use by lab technicians, not machinists. 5 TENSILKUT EQUIPMENT FOR NOTCHING IMPACT TEST SPECIMENS Notching metal or plastic blanks for impact testing is challenging. The blanks can be cut with a Tensilkut machine, but the notches must be extremely precise in depth, angle and radius. Impactkut and Impactmill are designed specifically to meet the exacting requirements for the ASTM notches in metal or non-metallic specimens. 6 TENSILKUT EQUIPMENT FOR CUTTING STRAIGHT STRIPS An accurate straight strip is the basis for many tests; without it, cutting a tensile, compression or other shaped test bar is more difficult. A slightly oversized straight strip also speeds the finishing of a bar for flexural testing, or of the blank for an impact specimen. It can also be used for a number of tests in its own right, including as blanks for paint and corrosion tests and hardness testing. Tensilkut offers equipment for preparing these strips from metals and non-metallics. 7 TENSILKUT EQUIPMENT FOR PREPARING IOSIPESCU SHEAR BEND TEST SAMPLES First developed several years ago for an aerospace customer, the V-Mill notches prepared blanks for both the ASTM D5397 and ASTM D7078 shear bend tests. The double notches are precisely aligned using our Master Template system, while the custom diamond cutting wheel ensures accurate notch dimensions. 8 TENSILKUT MASTER TEMPLATES AND TENSILBITS Tensilkut master templates and Tensilbits are integral to the accuracy of the Tensilkut I and Tensilkut II. Templates for a wide variety of ASTM standards are in stock; others, including those for JIS, ISO, DIN and custom specifications are made to order quickly. Tensilbits with a wide variety of flute patterns for optimal cuts on a wide variety of materials, are in stock. 9 THE TENSILKUT EDGE Following long established procedure for cutting test specimens, a milling cutter turning at a relatively slow speed removes a heavy cut of material in each pass. This induces cold working distortion, the severity of which can be compounded by dulling of the cutters and a lack of cutting oil. Die cutting causes similar deformations, severely stretching the grains at the edge of the specimen, and requiring extensive hand finishing. These microphotographs show steel specimens cut by conventional methods, compared to the perfect grain in the Tensilkut samples.
