Chairman s Comments West Midlands Woodturners Secretary: Brian Goodall Telephone: briangoodall@gmail.com This month we have spent some time reviewing the criteria of the monthly Chairman s Challenge projects and the criteria for the projects. As you will see later in the Newsletter we will reintroduce two categories of entrants. I hope this will iron out some unforeseen anomalies on my part and hopefully we can encourage more entrants. On a separate topic, the proposed visit to see Birmingham Museum s Pinto Collection of Turned Historical pieces, I have had three members approach me to show an interest in having an arranged viewing. Ideally we need a party of twelve, should there be no greater level of interest I intend to cancel my arrangements with the curator of the collection. Looking forward to a successful week-end at Hatton Country Park, see you there and trust the efforts are all worthwhile. AUGUST 2012 PROGRAMME 2012 August 19th.Full Day Hands On Day. September 16th. 3 WEST MIDLANDS WOODTURNERS Page 3 Chairman s Challenge for August 19th. Hollow Form Vase with Narrow Neck Insert. Chairman s Challenge Sponsored by Earlswood Interiors The object of the Chairman s Challenge is to encourage as many club members as possible to have a go at producing a nominated turned piece on a monthly basis, to be judged by club members. The winners of the two separate ability groups will be the members with the highest aggregate points for the year in, their respective group. Following a discussion as to how to take the Monthly Challenge forward it has been proposed that, 1 We will revert to two competition groups with members voting for the pieces in each group. Group one---basic Level and Group Two ---Premier Group. 2 A challenge item will be selected from one of the items made by our visiting demonstrator, these will be displayed and judged at the next meeting, usually a Hands On meeting. 3 Challenge items for the meeting following the Hands On meeting will be selected in advance and announced In the Newsletter. 4 There will be a further Annual Competition to be judged at the Christmas meeting details will be announced at a later date. 5 In order to be eligible for the advanced group competition, members must have won the basic competition in previous years or be invited to join the group by the Chairman. 6 Members forming the initial Premier Group are:- T. Davies, M. Thorpe, G. Miller, D. Lawrence, P. Stevenson, D. Nash, C. Lane. Basic Group :- This is open to all members other than those who fall into the above category. Proposed Visit to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Pinto Collection of Wooden Artefacts. It has been suggested that we ask to view this collection as a group from West Midlands Woodturners. This would be an opportunity to see the whole collection, normally there are only a few pieces on display. I have made contact with the museum, and the curator will be in touch to offer to accommodate our request. Anyone who may be interested in joining us on a visit please let me know. The venue will be at the Museum Collection Centre in Nechells. I am assured it is a wonderful venue with plenty of parking. It would be daytime on a Tues/ Wed or Thurs. No date has been set yet. 4 Report on the demonstration of Mick Hanbury Mick Hanbury is a professional wood turner who earns his living from demonstrations, tuition, commissions and the sale of highly decorated items. His philosophy is, that no matter how well turned and finished an object may be, it is still round and brown, and needs further enhancement to achieve maximum appeal. The object of his demonstration was to show us the various methods he uses to achieve this; mostly by adding texture and colour. The items on his impressive display table were certainly eye-catching and attracted a lot of attention throughout the day. Mick explained that he uses mainly bowl and spindle gouges and how important were the shapes of these and the angles at which they were ground. He used a sharpening jig on a grinder fitted with a blue stone wheel and a CBN (cubic boron nitride) coated metal wheel. For his first item, Mick mounted a bowl blank of London Plane measuring approximately 10 diameter by 2 thick onto a screw chuck and brought up the tailstock for support. At this point he emphasised the importance of the dot made by the revolving centre for accurately remounting the bowl later on. He remarked that if London Plane was quarter sawn, it became known as lacewood. This blank, however, was from a board obtained by sawing through and through. After truing up the edge of the blank, he defined what would be the top edge of the bowl by removing a small amount of timber from the edge towards the centre, but without going all the way in. He then turned his attention to the outside of the bowl, stressing two important design considerations. Firstly, the diameter of the foot of the bowl was to be about one third of the overall diameter. Secondly, the outside form of the bowl was to be one continuous curve from foot to rim in the shape of an ogee. Using a spindle gouge with sweptback wings, he formed a chucking spigot with a dovetail to suit the chuck he was using. He then moved out from the centre to define the position of the foot ring, and commenced the shaping. While doing this, he showed us how he changed from a bevel cut to a shear cut by altering the position of his wrist. Once he had obtained the shape he wanted, Mick then turned up the speed and took a finishing cut with a double bevelled gouge working from the centre to the rim without a pause. The outside of the bowl was now ready for sanding. When he applied a piece of 320-grit paper, the usual cloud of dust could be seen rising from the lathe. To reduce this, Mick had made up a soft polish consisting of beeswax dissolved in liquid paraffin, with lavender added to impart a scent. He then applied this all over the outside of the bowl and resumed sanding. The cloud of dust disappeared and was directed downwards to where an extractor would normally be sited. For all his sanding, Mick used a hand held sanding disc which WEST MIDLANDS WOODTURNERS

WEST MIDLANDS WOODTURNERS obtained its motion by being brought into contact with the spinning work. He used squares of paper rather than discs, as the corners could be used on fine detail. The final step was to produce a decorated annulus, about half an inch wide, around the base ring. To do this he used a texturing wheel, of which more later. Page 5 The bowl was then reversed onto the chuck with the jaws gripping the spigot in compression mode, and the hollowing out commenced. Mick only took this process so far before applying the first stage of the decoration. For this he used a small arbortech machine to carve grooves in the rim area of the bowl. Having thus defined this area, he removed more wood from the centre, applied his special wax, and sanded down to 400 grit. The next step was to apply three patches of each of the three colours, red, blue and yellow to different parts of the bowl. To do this he used a spray diffuser, which he inserted, into the bottles of spirit based dye he was using. When he blew down the mouthpiece, a jet of colour was directed onto the bowl. He started with the darkest colour, blue, followed by red and then yellow. When these were dry, Mick used a sponge brush to apply a layer of acrylic black paint to the centre of the bowl, and then to gently draw the colour out from the centre to the edge in several places, finally applying this colour to the edge of the bowl. With the lathe running slowly, he sprayed on acrylic lacquer and left the lathe running to help everything dry while we had a tea break. After tea, Mick removed the remainder of the centre to make a mini bowl. He also made a small vee cut to separate the two textured surfaces, sanded the central bowl, again using his wax system, and brushed out any dust left in the carved hollows. He left it at that, but to finish it completely, the bowl would need to be reversed again, carefully centred using the original dot left by the revolving centre, and the chucking spigot gently removed by taking light cuts. The end result was an attractive coloured and textured bowl, which Mick kindly donated to the Club for a future raffle prize. Mick s second project was to make a hollow form, which was to be decorated to resemble a piece of pottery. He started with a piece of sycamore approximately 4 square by 6 long and mounted it between centres. After bringing it to the round with a roughing out gouge, he cut a dovetailed spigot at the tail stock end and after reversing it

onto the chuck, commenced shaping the vase. He then drilled a hole down the centre to the required depth using a spindle gouge with a 60 degree bevel and began hollowing out. He was careful not to make the hole any greater than 40 mm in diameter as this was the optimum size for his chuck jaws in expansion mode. He continued hollowing with a cranked scraper to slightly undercut the inside top part of the vase. When the shape was to his liking he applied a coat of his sanding wax all over and sanded down to 240 grit. He then covered the whole of the outside with black acrylic paint applied with a sponge brush and left the work rotating slowly to assist drying. To colour this piece, he used iridescent paints and laid out three strips of different colours onto a piece of perspex. Using a finger, he drew it across the ends of the three strips and applied it to the vase, repeating the process until the whole surface was covered. He then took a wooden skewer and used it to draw lines in the paint from the base to the top. As before, the piece was left on the slowly rotating lathe for a few minutes to assist drying. Once dry, it was sprayed with clear acrylic lacquer, which brought out the colours and indeed gave the piece a ceramic look. To finish the vase, Mick turned a 40 mm spigot on a separate piece of wood to be a tight fit in the hole left in the top of the vase. After mounting it in the chuck, he used a 3/8 spindle gouge to produce the shape he wanted and to bore a hole through its centre. This was wax sanded as usual, and left with an undecorated dullish finish. By now it was lunchtime and the piece was left unfinished. What would have happened is that the vase would be reversed onto the 40 mm jaws in expansion mode while the original holding spigot was removed. The separate top piece would then be glued in place. After lunch, Mick attached another bowl blank to the screw chuck. This time it was a piece of air-dried maple approximately 2 thick by 10 diameter. It had been cut from a fork in the tree and had a beautiful feathered grain running through it just to one side of the centre. As with the first bowl, Mick shaped the outside into a smooth ogee curve, created a textured band around the foot, and a dovetailed spigot for future chucking. He then sanded it down to 400 grit using his paraffin/wax system. WEST MIDLANDS WOODTURNERS

WEST MIDLANDS WOODTURNERS When he had reversed the bowl into the chuck and taken a light cut across the surface, the full effect of the grain pattern was revealed. At this point, Mick decided to make the top of the bowl slightly convex and to make a small hole in the centre to take a tea light. This did not look right, so he fell back on the old formula, making the diameter of the hole about one third of the overall diameter. Satisfied that this looked much better, Mick then considered how he could further enhance the piece. Page 7 Looking closely at the feathered structure of the grain, Mick pencilled in a few extensions to the pattern and using a high-powered pyrography machine, he burnt into the wood along the pencil lines. He followed this with a series of different sized countersink holes made by a suitable bit attached to a hand held dentist s type drill. Some of these holes turned black due to his deliberately allowing the bits to burn the wood. After this treatment the whole top surface was lightly dry sanded and the dust brushed off. This piece was left incomplete, as more work was needed on the other side of the grained area, which he would do at a later date. He remarked that other cutters were available such as a diamond wheel, saw, various piercing cutters, balls, burrs etc. On his display table, Mick had a number of decorated cubes with a turned button in the centre of each face. For his next project he took us part way through making one of these. Taking a 75mm cube of sycamore, he marked the centre of each face and gripped the cube in a set of Cole jaws fitted to the chuck. With the lathe speed not exceeding 1200rpm, (a limit set by the manufacturer), and using a 35mm diameter Forstner bit in the tailstock, he drilled a blind hole into the cube to a little beyond half way. He then trued up the face, dished it slightly, and sanded it down to 240 grit. This process would be repeated on the remaining five faces of the cube using the tailstock centre to align the piece in the jaws each time. On dishing the face some worm holes appeared and Mick decided to disguise these by using his pyrography machine to burn a sunrise pattern on one side of the diagonal of the face.

He then took a short length of 2 square timber and turned it down to form a plug for the hole in the cube face. This was then parted off, rechucked and the other end domed over to form the top of the plug. On inserting the plug in the hole in the cube, Mick decided it looked better in the face which had previously been burned. As a result, he then pyrographed a similar pattern on half of the plug top. He was not happy with that either, so continued to burn the whole of the plug top.. Some of these cubes were made to hold secret boxes in which trinkets could be stored WEST MIDLANDS WOODTURNERS For his final project, Mick returned to the application of texture using toothed wheels. He mounted a 6 square blank on a screw chuck and turned a bowl shape on the outside. He then showed us how the pattern changed with various lathe speeds and various angles of presentation. Each wheel has a bevelled edge and a straight edge and depending on which is offered to the wood, a different effect is produced. Another idea was to form a bead on the bottom of a bowl and with a small wheel, make a pattern on the bead. Yet another option was to use coloured car body filler to fill the grooves made by the texturing wheels. So, if round and brown is no longer good enough, Mick Hanbury has shown us many ways in which colour and texture can be used to enhance our work. Thank you, Mick, for an interesting and thoughtprovoking day. Malcolm Caine. Mick Hanbury s Display Table

I am finding that my free time is diminishing and I would like someone else to take over the production of the Newsletter. I have been producing it for some time now and it would probably benefit from a fresh mind and a new point of view. Please consider this matter carefully as I am afraid that unless a volunteer is forthcoming the Newsletter will probably cease to exist. Brian Goodall. Newsletter I have been underwhelmed by the response to this notice which appeared in last month s Newsletter. You have until the end of the Year! Brian s If s are supposed to be faster than normal post why does it take some people days to reply to them? I get quite frustrated waiting for people to reply to me! Items for the Newsletter If anyone has any items for inclusion in the Newsletter, please note that the deadline for the Sept. issue is August 22nd.
