OSMO Polyx-Oil 3054 Hardwax Oil Application Instructions for Hardwood Floors REV OSMO North America

OSMO Polyx Oil (3054): Please read through the entire application instructions prior to use of the product. Assessing the wood: OSMO Polyx Hardwax Oil (3054) can be applied to most wood species without difficulty. Certain tropical and unusual wood species may require additional preparation, or may not be compatible with this product. If you are going to apply Polyx 3054 to a tropical or lesser known wood species please refer to the wood species chart on the last page of this document. (If the species does not appear on the chart, a test application is recommended. You also can contact OSMO North America for product support.) Sanding: OSMO Polyx-Oil is not a film forming finish like polyurethanes, Swedish, or oil-modified finishes. Rough areas, machining/sanding errors and other uneven areas must be removed completely prior to applying Polyx-Oil. Polyx-Oil must be applied to bare wood, or over a non sealing stain such as OSMO Wood Wax Finish. The final sand should be between grit depending on desired look and wood species. Do not use a floor pad or finer grits after the final sanding. Use National Wood Flooring Association standards when sanding. Final Sanding should be between 100 and 120 grit, following NWFA standards. NO finer. Preparation: After sanding, thoroughly vacuum, tack cloth and then vacuum again the entire floor. Dust removal must be complete to ensure the best finish. The application techniques used tend to stir dust up more than those used for topcoat type finishes. With good dust removal and proper application, sanding between coats should not be necessary. Staining: If desired, stain with OSMO Wood Wax Finish or OSMO Pro Color Oil. See separate application instructions for use of Osmo stain products. Coverage: Polyx-Oil is ready to use. Do not dilute or thin. Stir well before and during use. Its high solids content gives a very high coverage rate. One 2.5L can of Polyx-Oil will coat square feet of flooring per coat. With proper preparation and application, two coats are needed. Occasionally, floors of softer woods, rustic appearance, or exceptional dryness or roughness may require a third coat. Please contact OSMO North America product support BEFORE applying a third coat. THERE IS NO BENEFIT OF A THIRD COAT ON A PROPERLY FINISHED TWO COAT FLOOR!

Application Steps Ensure the floor is properly prepared, including thorough dust removal. Gather tools: OSMO Floor Brush (HIGHLY recommended tool) and stiff, strong pole Tray for finish to fit brush Polyx-Oil as needed to finish desired area, lid opener Stir stick Rags Nitrile gloves, blue disposable. (The white Latex types do not provide proper protection.) Stir the Polyx-Oil well do not shake. Step 1: Open the can and stir the finish well. Do not shake. Pour the necessary amount of Polyx-Oil into the tray. It is best to measure floor area and finish to ensure correct spread rate PER COAT. See the chart below for guidelines. Step 2: Pour the amount of Polyx-Oil to be used into a pan wide enough to accomodate the floor brush. Approximate Floor Area Measured Amount (per coat) 15 square feet 1/4 cup 20 square feet 1/3 cup 30 square feet 1/2 cup 60 square feet 1 cup

Choose a corner of the room to begin applying finish. Make sure you can back out of the room without having to cross wet finish. Dip the floor brush into the finish about 1/4 deep. Do not overload the brush. Start several inches away from the walls or trim. As the brush becomes drier, work into the areas along the walls. DO NOT allow the finish to puddle along the baseboards. Apply the finish directly to the floor, working to spread the finish out and work it INTO the wood by applying firm pressure. Spread the finish thin. Work it into the wood. This takes some effort. Step 3: Apply the finish to the floor using the Osmo Floor brush. Apply force, distribute the finish, work it into the wood. Spread the finish working it back and forth over the floor. The size of the work area should be comfortable to reach with the brush and pole. Don t overreach be sure that you can exert the pressure required to drive the finish into the wood. Be sure to apply pressure to the brush note the bristles bending in the photo. This helps to drive the finish and keeps it from building on the surface. Step 4: Spread the finish back and forth, apply pressure to the brush. The action is closer to scrubbing than to painting.

Work the finish back and forth to ensure that it is thoroughly worked into the wood. Unlike paint, or other floor finishes, there should be essentially NO finish on the surface of the floor. There should be NO brush marks. On the first coat, only the color change/darkening should be evidence of application. DO NOT lift the brush straight up from the floor lift only after the brush stops giving up finish to the floor. Lifting will create shiny spots that will be a problem later on. Proceed over the entire floor in this manner, working the finish into the floor, avoiding any buildup or brush marks. It is best to start each brush load of finish slightly away from the area last worked. This will help prevent over-application of finish and brush marks. Clean the brush and other tools with the OSMO Brush Cleaner. Dispose of rags and other waste properly to avoid spontaneous combustion of oil soaked items. (see Cleanup, page 5) Step 5: Work the finish back and forth, scrubbing it into the wood. There should not be enough finish left on the surface to leave brush marks. The first coat needs to dry 8-12 hours before beginning the second coat. Cool damp conditions and/or poor ventilation may cause this dry time to be longer. Examine the floor for trapped debris, shiny areas, lap marks, stop marks, etc. Remove any debris found. Usually debris such as bristles will come right off leaving no trace. If a definite area of buildup is left around debris it is likely that the finish was over-applied or not worked in properly. Glossy areas, stop or lap marks also need to be corrected before recoating. Please contact OSMO North America product support before proceeding. Assuming good results from the first coat, no sanding or buffing is required before the second coat is applied. The second coat requires slightly less effort to apply, but attention to spread rate, consistent coverage and THOROUGH working in of the finish is required for proper results. Be especially diligent about brush marks, lap marks, and stop marks. During application of the second coat, the wood will not change color as it did on the first. Arrange a light source so that you will be able to observe the slightly shinier appearance created by the wet second coat and to better enable preventing skips, brush marks, lap marks, and stop marks. Be methodical and thorough.

TIPS: Follow the spread rate closely. Double check your spread rate as you proceed. If it is not correct, consult with product support at OSMO North America. Apply product approximately 6 away from walls, trim, posts, etc. After the brush has less finish on it, work into these areas using the correct vigorous action. Make your last brushing strokes with the grain of the wood. Polyx-oil will begin to set up or get tacky after about 15 minutes. This will vary depending on temperature, spread rate, and air flow. Always look back over your work before the finish begins to tack up, reworking any areas with buildup, brush marks, stop marks, etc. Certain species or grades of wood MAY require a third coat. Please contact OSMO North America before applying a third coat unless very experienced with the product. Over application is much more difficult to fix than is under application. When in doubt, apply less material more vigorously. Additional finish can always be added with little or no preparation. This picture shows a floor where the applicaton process has been started, and will be picked up again later. Note the depth and richness of color that Polyx-Oil brings out in the wood.

Clean Up Clean tools and brushes with Osmo brush cleaner. Make sure to use enough cleaner to get all of the finish out of the brush and then wipe briskly with a cotton rag. Clean up any spilled finish or messes with a rag. Discard properly to avoid spontaneous combustion. (see below) A UL / FM approved red can may be used to dispose of all waste material. If an approved oily waste container is not available, soak all material in water and store in an air tight container. Safety WARNING: Spontaneous Combustion Danger! Oil-soaked materials (rags, steel wool, sanding dust, etc.) may spontaneously combust. Immerse oil-soaked materials in water and store in an air-tight container. WARNING: Contains Flammable Solvents! Combustible Material Use only in areas with no open flames or other sources of ignition. No smoking. Provide good ventilation. Observe all local and federal laws that pertain to the handling and storage of these types of products. Trapped Heat Sufficent Oxygen Fire! Living with your new finish Application methods and environmental conditions (temperature and humidity) will affect drying time of OSMO Polyx-oil. Under optimal conditions, Polyx -Oil cures over a 2-3 week period and the following timeframes apply: Between coats: 8-12 hours Walk on the floor (in stocking feet): hours after final coat Return furniture to the room hours To lay down area rugs: 7-14 days after final coat Protecting Your Floor Entry Rug Felt feet Chair mat Above from left, entry rugs will help keep dirt from being tracked onto your hardwoods, felt feet on furniture will help prevent scratching and denting, and chair mats will keep working surfaces in front of desks in good shape.

Cleaning and Maintenance Properly maintained, this finish can last indefinitely. The OSMO Opti-Set and Maintenance Kit are ideal for cleaning and maintaining your floor. An effective maintenance schedule to keep your OSMO floor finish looking great and might look like this: Cleaning the Floor As Needed Vacuum, sweep or dust regularly to remove grit. Dust the floor using the Opti-Set with the green Dust-Mop attachment. Damp mop as needed using Wash and Care and the Opti-Set with the Micro-mop plush (white fluffy pad) attachment. Refreshing/Repairing the Finish As Needed After cleaning the surface thoroughly, allow to dry. Apply Liquid Wax Cleaner to refresh high traffic areas. Attach the Active fibre cloth to the Opti-Set and apply a small amount of OSMO Liquid Wax Cleaner to the cloth. Rub this into the surface. Allow to dry for 30 to 60 minutes, until the material dries to a haze. Buff lightly with a soft cotton cloth. (You can use either Active fibre cloth or the Micro-mop plush for this light buffing.) To repair superficial scratches, stains or ground-in dirt, use a white abrasive pad or 000 steel wool to rub a small amount of liquid wax cleaner into the affected area to loosen the dirt and provide a deeper cleaning. The Osmo Opti-set makes maintenance easy. (And fun too, obviously.) REV
