Electronically controlled lathe This " machine is equipped with built -in faceplate jaws, powe r wrench and loading units. It also has attachments for crowning and spiral, flute and staggered ragging. Numerically controlled contouring lathe Numerical control guides this 6 " lathe through preprogrammed operations, ranging from heavy stock removal on "as-cast" steel rolls to precise finish machining. Speeds and feeds permit use of carbide and ceramic tooling.

3 TAILSTOCK: The tailstock spindle is mounted in precision-type antifriction bearings. Built-in springs a re provided at the rear of the spindle to allow for expansion of the work piece. If desired, power traverse to the quill can be furnished. For smaller sizes, an air film permits easy, rapid, manual positioning of the tailstock along the bed. Power rapid traverse to the tailstock base is available for all sizes. CARRIAGE: Antifriction rollers for the carriage guideway reduce stick-slip conditions, assuring straightness of cut and maximum accuracy. The carriage platforms, which are furnished with all lathes, give the operator full freedom of movement for observing cutting operations and changing tools. CONTROL PANEL: For numeri cally controlled lathes, the control panel containing all push buttons is normally mounted on the carriage platform. Lathes designed for manual, electronic and tracer control are furnished with a portable push-button panel as shown o page 5. TAILSTOCK THRUST INDI CATOR: When the tailstock is supplied with power feed to the quill, a load instrument can also be furnished. With this mechanism, the operator sets the work load on the dial of the thrust indicator, and the quill-traverse motor stops when this predetermined setting has been reached. A thrust indicator is illustrated on page 6. CHIP DISPOSAL: Large areas are provided in the center of the bed for chip disposal. A conveyor can be installed to carry the chips to a bucket or vertical- lift conveyor for removal from the pit. TOOL SUPPORTS: Tool supports are manually adjustable, and can be securely clamped to the cross slide. They are designed for maximum rigidity and will accommodate the most advanced roll-cutting tools. As the carriage moves, the cables are rolled over a controlled bending radius to prevent kinking or wear. This device reduces maintenance and also protects the cables from chips. FACEPLATE: The faceplate is provided with milled T slots arranged for faceplate jaws. The antifriction faceplate bearing (illustrated on page 6) is in the front headstock wall, as close as possible to the point of load application. Made extremely large to carry the faceplate hub, it has tremendous reserve capac1ty. SPINDLE DRIVE: The headstock spindle is driven by either a direct-current adjustable-speed motor, with 4 to 1 speed range, or a variable-voltage motor drive. The drive, in connection with the mechanical speed changes available, provides a wide range of operating speeds. of su pports d can be oss slide. m rigidity most ad- ~ close-up tool sup- WAYS: Front and center ways are fitted with replaceable, hardened and ground steel plates. These plates, which are of heavy section, are bolted from underneath so that there are no interruptions in the hardened surfaces. The use of four ways permits the carriage to pass completely by the tailstock as well as the steadyrests. BED: The bed is made of Farrel Meehanite metal, a special, processed, cast metal of superior physical properties and high strength, combining many of the best qualities of cast iron and steel. Meehanite is an ideal metal for the bed casting because of its superior vibration-damping qualities. The bed is of heavy section with frequently spaced double-wall girts. HEADSTOCK: The headstock is suitable for the most rugged steel-mill usage as well as for the finest finishing work. All drive gears are the doublehelical type, precision-generated by the well-known Farrel process, which assures smooth operation and long life. For selection of the different mechanical speeds, the gears are engaged by positive, internal-external, gear-tooth type clutches. Mechanical speed changes can be selected manually or, optionally, by remote control at the carriage. 4

Farrel roll-turning lathes incorporate a bed with four ways, to give it great over-all rigidity, and a new drive arrangement that contributes significantly to the smoothness of feed. The result is a lathe that combines the highest stock-removal rates with extreme accuracy and ease of control. FOUR-WAY BED The design of the bed provides more rigid support of the tool because the cutting-force resultant falls between the front and middle ways. There is more rigid support of the work since it is not necessary to extend the tailstock quill to reach across the carriage bridge. LONGITUDINAL FEED The "Rotorak" drive consists of a sectional threaded rack and a pair of large screws (as shown in the upper illustrations at the right). The drive screws are completely enclosed, except for the quadrant in mesh with the rack, and are adjustable for backlash. As the rack is in short sections, there is no limit to the length of bed that can be supplied. This feed system eliminates the need for a lead screw, rods and shifter mechanism. CENTRALIZED CONTROL From the carriage, the operator has finger-tip control of all operations. He can closely observe tool action and conveniently change tools. For lathes with manual, electronic and tracer control, the control station is portable (as illustrated at the right). 5 Below: Portable control panel for tracer-controlled lathe.
