2 thread mills - product overview Thread Mills cut a thread using helical interpolation. Helical interpolation involves moving three axes simultaneously. The X and Y axes move in a circular motion while the Z axis moves in a linear motion. This allows Thread Mills to cut both right and left hand threads and to produce a variety of thread sizes (of the same pitch). ll Thread Mills are made from premium sub-micron carbide (except for T15 Powdered Metal Thread Mills) and are stocked with or without a TiLN coating. They are ground on state-of-the-art N tool and cutter grinders and have been engineered for high performance. Programming assistance is available. Straight Flute Thread Mills: Straight Flute Thread Mills are economical, offered in a large variety of sizes, and excel in a large variety of materials. ll the solid carbide straight flute thread mills (except staggered tooth) are crest cutting and are for internal threads only. UN Page 5; Metric Page 8; NPT Page 10 Staggered Tooth Thread Mills: Staggered Tooth Thread Mills have every other tooth removed in a staggered pattern. This reduces the side cutting pressure in half while still cutting the entire form. ll staggered tooth thread mills will cut both internal and external threads and excel in course pitches and difficult-to-cut materials. Page 7 Helical Flute Thread Mills: Helical Flute Thread Mills are for high performance applications in all materials. The 30º helical flute allows for reduced side cutting pressure and will cut both internal and external threads. UN Page 6; Metric Page 9; NPT Page 10 Valueline Helical Flute Thread Mills: Valueline Helical Thread Mills have a 15º helical flute and cut internal threads only. They are available only in the more popular sizes that allow for large production and economy. UN Page 6; Metric Page 9; NPT Page 10 T15 Powdered Metal Thread Mills: T15 Powdered Metal Thread Mills come with a TiN coating. They are more break resistant than carbide, excelling where rigidity is a problem. These tools will cut both internal and external threads and should be run at about one third the surface feet per minute of their carbide counterparts. Page 7 LR Long Reach Thread Mills: Long Reach Thread Mills have three teeth and a helical flute that provide reduced side cutting pressure. The first tooth roughs, the second and third finish. This allows for the efficient cutting of extremely deep threads in small sizes. These tools cut internal threads only. Page 12 SP Single Profile Thread Mills: Single Profile Thread Mills have multiple flutes but only one thread form. This provides the lowest possible side cutting pressure. It also allows for one tool to cut a large range of thread sizes in both inch and metric. ll SP s will cut both internal and external threads. Page 13 SPEILTY END MILLS - PRODUT OVERVIEW These specialty end mills feature the same premium carbide as the rest of the product line. They are ground on modern N tool and cutter grinders to tight tolerances and have been engineered for high performance. orner Rounding End Mills: orner Rounding End Mills have three flutes and are double ended to provide maximum value. The cutter diameter and the cut depth are held to ±0.001 tolerance to provide ease of set-up. Page 14 Engraving Tools: Engraving Tools come in a large variety of angles and sizes. These solid carbide tools will engrave on a large variety of materials. The tool tip is held to ±0.001 tolerance for uniformity. Page 14 i

3 SINGLE POINT S - product overview ll single point tools are designed for internal machining on a lathe. The helical boring bars can be used for both lathe and mill applications. ll cutting tools are made from premium sub-micron carbide and are stocked with or without a TiLN coating. HOLDERS Single Point Holders: oolant Holders have two flats on the shank, two coolant holes, and four set screws. They can be used with or without the ack Stop. Standard holders have two set screws and no flats on the shank. Page 15 ORING RS Radial Relief oring ars: Radial Relief oring ars have a radial relief behind the cutting edge that provides for a strong cutting edge. Page 16 Mini-oring ars: Mini-oring ars come in a range of diameters from to of an inch. They are fluted to retain maximum strength. This facilitates cutting unfavorable length-to-diameter ratios. The tools on page 22 are dimensioned to cut the minimum bore when rotated on a mill. Profile oring ars: Profile oring ars are ideal for internal profiling on N lathes. Page 23 ack hamfer oring ars: ack hamfer oring ars are designed to bore a diameter and cut a chamfer at the end of a hole. They also excel for cutting thread reliefs. Page 29 PORT S - product overview ll Port Tools are ground between centers to ensure absolute concentricity. They are made from heat-treated alloy steel with brazed carbide inserts. They are designed to enlarge a pre-drilled hole and easily produce a complex form. Port Tools can be used for both lathe and mill applications. Tapered Pipe Reamer: Tapered Pipe Reamers prepare a hole to be threaded with a NPT thread. They cut the 1º47 angle and the 45º lead in angle. Page 30 ritish Standard Parallel Pipe: ritish Standard Parallel Pipe port tools cut the minor thread diameter, the 45º angle, and the spot face. Page 30 MS16142: MS16142 port tools come in two different styles. With the solid pilot tool, the minor diameter must be cut to size before the tool can be used. This tool excels when the thread depth deviates from standard. The reamer pilot tool cuts the minor thread diameter to size. Other names for this port are SEJ1926, SEJ514, and the O-Ring oss (OR). It s located on line 61. Line 61 lists several location numbers. These numbers will show all the tools available to produce this thread. The location numbers on line 61 are 5K, 6Q, 6G, 7I, 50. The first number indicates the page in the catalog where the tool is found. For 5K, look on catalog page 5 and then search for 5K. The letters follow alphabetically down the columns. The 6Q, 6G and 7I are more options for cutting the 7/16-20 thread. Notice the 50 located at the end of line 61. This indicates that Line 50 lists more thread mills that will cut the 7/16-20 thread. The tools in line 50 will cut both the 3/8-20 and the 7/16-20 internal threads. Why use the 3/8-20 thread mill for cutting a 7/16-20 thread? lthough the 7/16-20 is larger and stronger, the smaller thread mill will allow for better chip evacuation and better coolant penetration. lso, the smaller thread mill will run at a higher RPM for the designated Surface Feet Per Minute (SFPM). oth would be an excellent choice. If the thread mill is small and the length of thread deep, always use the largest tool available. For larger thread sizes with more favorable length-to-diameter ratios, a smaller size thread mill of the same pitch can be used quite effectively. 2
