3 Welcome to vhf, and thank you very much for your interest in our tools. Compared with the last issue of our tool catalogue, we have considerably extended the range of tools so that this catalogue has got one third more pages. We offer a dozen completely new tool types beginning with a single tooth cutter with face radius over high speed double tooth cutters and special milling cutters for wood, aluminium and foam up to a spiral-toothed cutter for composite materials. When you use such tools which are optimised for certain tasks you work much more efficiently in their respective field of application than when you just use a universal tool. All new types are marked accordingly in our great overview from page 8 on. Twelve more types of tools have gained new cutting edge geometries in appreciable extent or they are now also available with a coating. This will extend their endurance remarkably. And last but not least more good news: Also for this new issue of the catalogue we have been able to reduce many prices of our range of tools. A more rational serial production has made this possible. Increased prices on the other hand remain an absolute exception. Please ask us any question concerning our catalogues or tools, our friendly vhf team will be glad to help you. Frank Benzinger Chief Executive Officer All prices exclude VAT, customs duties and transportation/packaging fees Deliveries are always subject to our Terms of Sale; we would be glad to send them to you on request and you will find them on the internet at All trade and product names mentioned in this catalogue belong to their owners Technical modifications and errors excepted July 2012.

5 Carbide and 5 Count on Carbide... Due to its extraordinary features, tools made of carbide are far superior to those made of high speed steel (HSS). For high speed cutting, HSS tools can no longer be used. That s why all tools in this catalogue are carbide tools either completely or partly. Most of our tools are solid carbide tools, the diamond tools consist of a carbide shank with an attached diamond and the router bits have carbide cutting edges. Carbide is an artificial product and consists mainly of the hard materials tungsten carbide and other finest grind powders. This mixture will be sintered under extreme pressure and high temperatures until it becomes a solid object. Therefore carbide cannot be compared to ferrous materials like steel. However, due to its extreme hardness and finest graining which ensure a long endurance and clear edges of cut, it is also more brittle and fragile than steel.... or on! is even much harder than carbide. Carbide tools with diamond attachment have a multiple of the endurance of carbide tools. We use two sorts of diamonds monocrystalline and polycrystalline diamonds. Our monocrystalline diamonds correspond in their structure to natural diamonds although they have been produced artificially. They are excellent for polishing acrylic to a high gloss. Polycrystalline diamonds will be sintered from numerous single crystals at high temperatures and pressures to a solid plate. This production process is comparable to that of carbide. Despite their higher cost price, diamond tools are the more economic alternative for many processing tasks last but not least due to the possibility that they can be regrind for several times.

6 6 Carbide and Development and Production Our tool experts develop sophisticated cutting edge geometries in order to exactly adjust the tools to different materials and machining strategies. In our own production, these standard and special tools will be manufactured in a consistently high quality. vhf uses six-axis grinding centres and exclusively ultra finest grain or super finest grain carbides of German origin. The own production facilities enable us to flexibly manufacture variants of existing types. So the range of tools will be further extended also during the period of validity of this catalogue. Please have a look on our web site from time to time to see if there are new tools which may be interesting for you. From one source: Development of the cutting edge geometry up to the production of the carbide tool on a 6 axis precision grinding centre. Live in the Working Process We exhibit our carbide and diamond tools at about one dozen trade fairs per year which are focused on quite different topics. The range extends from trade fairs for wood, plastics or metal processing up to specialized fairs for sign making or electronics. It will be a pleasure for us to welcome you at one of these fairs where you can see many of our tools live in the working process on our engraving and milling systems. Moreover, we exhibit numerous production samples which also help you to estimate the quality of our tools and machines. Please ask us for the latest trade fair calendar or just check these dates directly on our web site. in the working process at about one dozen trade fairs per year.

The largest choice is available for the oscillating tangential cutting head. Page 54 A diamond instead of a carbide cutting edge improves the quality and endurance without cooling. If the cutting edge is made of diamond instead of carbide, you will achieve an improved surface quality and endurance without coolant. Page 55 The second cutting edge again extends the endurance and enables a slightly improved smoothness. This milling cutter is ideal for harder materials. Page 56 Polishing You can produce polished acrylic letters or logos of any shape completely on your milling system. Polishing machines become dispensable. Page 57 Polishing Gravers With its diamond, this tool polishes engravings on sophisticated acrylic signboards to a high gloss. It is available with a top angle of 60 and 90. Page 58

12 12 Carbide and Gravers Gravers are conic tools (halved carbide rod) with one cutting edge. The deeper the graver dips into your workpiece, the broader becomes the engraving. The relationship between dipping depth and engraving width is determined by the top angle of the tool. A smaller top angle enables a more constant engraving width, even if the surface is not absolutely plane. We recommend our special 15 degree gravers for spindles without workpiece levelling. On request, we can also produce special designs. Additionally, we offer a regrinding service at a price of 8 per tool (our usual scales of discount are effective). Optimal for plastics, non-ferrous metals and wood. Stop Ring: 3 mm gravers are equipped with a stop ring (white), distance from tool tip to back of ring: 21 mm; stop rings for 4 and 6 mm gravers can be found on page 60. 14 14 Carbide and Box Gravers These special gravers with a top angle (α) of 92 degrees are very well suitable for bevelling. The material will be cut through nearly completely and bent up then. The oversize of 2 degrees equals tolerances and offers space for glue. The name of the tool box graver results from this application: it can be used for producing boxes, or more generally, for cabinet making. We would be glad to manufacture on request also special designs of gravers. For calculating the maximum material thickness which you can process with this tool, just subtract the engraving width (tip of the graver) from the half cutting edge. Additionally, we offer a regrinding service at a price of 8 for each tool with a shank of up to 6 mm and 12 for each tool with a shank of 8 mm and more (our usual scales of discount are effective). 17 Carbide and 17 All-rounders: single tooth cutters of finest grain carbide. Varius With our own brand Varius we have developed a series of milling cutters with one to four cutting edges. They distinguish themselves by a universal applicability and a long endurance. This type is made of finest grain carbide; it has a 30 degree spiral flute. Coating: Many of these milling cutters are available with a superhard carbon coating (SHC). This diamond-like special coating distinguishes itself by a minimum friction value and extreme hardness. So the milling cutters get a great dry running performance and do not tend to clog too easily. This universal single tooth cutter is suitable for milling aluminium (also aluminium composite plates), copper, zinc, brass, cast acrylic and plastics which do not tend to smear. With SHC coating it is especially suitable for (composite) materials with a considerable part of glue/resin (e. g. MDF, multiplex panels, chipboards) or thermosetting plastics (Bakelite, Pertinax, HPL,...). 20 20 Carbide and with Hawk Beak This single tooth cutter has a very sharp, exposed cutting edge ( hawk beak ) with an extreme grinding. The large flute enables a very good chip clearance. So the risk is low that the tool may clog during the milling process, also in softer sorts of aluminium. Coating: Many tools are optionally available with the high performance coating AluSpeed, a titanium boride composition. It protects the milling cutters from abrasion and a small affinity to aluminium notably prevents the formation of built-up edges. The extra smooth surface of these tools reduces the friction and due to the very thin coating layer of only 1 to 2 µm the cutter remains very sharp. milling cutter for aluminium; however, also very good results in plastics and wood. 24 24 Carbide and Varius, Left-Hand Twist Our universal single tooth cutter Varius is also available with a left-hand twisted flute. So the chips won t be transported to the top but be pressed downwards into the milled slot, although the tool is right-cutting like all vhf tools. An advantage of the left-hand twist is that the workpiece will be pressed downwards, too. Especially when workpieces have to be milled on a vacuum table with low holding force, the danger that the workpiece may loosen accidentally due to the corkscrew effect will be reduced considerably. The left-hand twist also shows advantages when working on thin materials or such which tend to fray easily. However, the removal rate is reduced a little bit. 36 36 Carbide and Triple Tooth for Stainless Steel These milling cutters with three teeth have a very short cutting edge and a special coating for a longer endurance. The flute has an angle of 45 degrees instead of the usual 30 degrees. This reduces the abrasive force on the workpiece. The cutting force is being distributed more equally and the endurance of the tool will be prolonged. This tool is especially suitable for milling steel and stainless steel. Please use only an appropriate lubricant for cooling, e. g. 39 Carbide and 39 No chance for burrs with this special tool. Deburring with a of up to 8 mm have 4 cutting edges, tools with a of 10 mm or more have 5 cutting edges. These tools always have a TiAlN special coating for a longer endurance and a top angle of 60, 90 or 120 degrees. In contrast to conventional deburring tools, this type can also be used at high rotational speeds for deburring or chamfering all kinds of contours quickly. Especially when you use larger tool s with a high frequency spindle, it is recommended to use this special tool type due to its very little unbalance. The life of the spindle will be prolonged and your results will be improved. This tool is optimally suited for deburring and chamfering plastics, non-ferrous metals and steel. 57 Carbide and 57 Polishes your acrylic edges and pockets to a high gloss. Polishing The monocrystalline diamond (MCD) which is attached to a carbide shank consists of pure carbon and is extremely resistant to wear. Although it has been produced synthetically, it has the same characteristics as a natural diamond. This ultra-hard material ensures glassy polishing edges. It is centre-cutting and cuts sidewards as well as downwards. This tool is used for polishing acrylic edges and pockets of any contour. A cutting edge or pocket that has been milled is a sufficient preparation. So all kinds of polished acrylic letters or logos can be produced quite easily. By default, the grinding of the diamonds is designed for working on plastics, if you would like to polish nonferrous metals, please ask us. 62 62 Carbide and Tips for the Proper Use of Always choose a milling cutter which is suitable for the material which you process. Please notice our extensive descriptions of the tools and their fields of application in this catalogue. Withstand the temptation to use a tool which you have at your fingertips incidentally. The tool should be as short as possible and be clamped as deep as possible into the collet chuck. If your material should not be listed, please classify it according to its machinability (hardness). When working on brass for instance, you should rather orient on the parameters of aluminium than on those of stainless steel, whereas when working on construction steel, you should rather orient on stainless steel than on aluminium. You can also use the opportunity of our personal tool advisory service via phone or (tool-info@vhf.eu). If we should give you advice concerning the machining parameters, please provide us with the following information: type of the material (with data sheet, where necessary), the maximum thickness which you want to process, your intended shank and cutting edge and some basic information concerning your machine (manufacturer and model, rotational speed of the spindle and its power, how do you fix the workpieces?). If you have already machined this kind of material, which tool do you use currently and what are your parameter settings? Finally, what are possible problems? Hints for the Right Number of Teeth In which case it is best that a milling cutter has as few teeth as possible... The main problem of milling slots is the agglomeration of chips on the cutting edge which may lead to a plugged milling cutter. When a milling cutter is finally plugged, it can no longer transport the chips, and the feeding force of the milling machine will break it. Usually this happens depending on the material long before the cutting edge is worn out. So, primarily the question whereto the chips should be discharged has to be solved. Usually this will be done upwards or to the back. However, the flute should be as large as possible to transport the chips past the substance of the milling cutter. A comparison of the cross-sections of different types clearly shows that the single tooth cutter has the greatest open space (= size of the flute). This leads to the lowest risk of plugging. The more cutting edges a milling cutter has, the more the open space is being reduced. The less cutting edges a milling cutter has and the more tapered they are, the easier it is to dip into the surface of the workpiece. For working on materials which are mainly used for sign making like plastics (PVC, acrylic, rigid foam, etc.) and non-ferrous metals (soft aluminium, aluminium composite plates, soft brass alloys,...), the single tooth cutter is usually better. The cutting edge erosion is less strong here than the risk of plugging. In which case it is best that a milling cutter has as many teeth as possible... The cutting edge is the wearing part of the milling cutter. The more cutting edges a milling cutter has, the more cutting edges share the wear. So the endurance, the life-time, of the tool will be prolonged. A milling cutter with more cutting edges has a better true running accuracy than with only one cutting edge. The more cutting edges a tool has, the smaller become the chips. This leads to smoother surfaces. A double tooth cutter is recommended when you are working on thermosetting plastics or harder sorts of aluminium (short-chipping). We recommend multi-tooth cutters for very hard non-ferrous metals (very hard aluminium alloys, brass,...) and for ferrous material. Usually, they are also well suitable for finishing operations. Wood Foam Ferrous Non-ferr. etc. Cross-section of single tooth cutter: It has a great open space. Cross-section of triple tooth cutter: Three cutting edges need much more space.

63 Carbide and 63 Setting the Machining Parameters In order to set the optimal values for lowering speed, dipping depth, feed rate and rotational speed, a number of factors are important: what material is the workpiece made of how is the workpiece fixed type of coolant/lubricant power/maximum rotational speed of the spindle minimum/maximum feed rate of the CAM system stiffness of the machine As there is a large number of parameters which influence each other, it is not possible to provide you with generalities concerning the machining parameters. Instead we would like to give you miscellaneous directions which points deserve closer attention. In any case you have to observe all safety and protective regulations of the machine. When you set the operational parameters, you should approach from the safe side, so you should choose at first for most materials a lower lowering speed, dipping depth and feed rate but keep up the rotational speed. During the milling process, you can further optimise the results by carefully changing the parameters. When machining plastics, please note that feed rates and rotational speeds which are too slow may lead to a melting of the material. The dipping depth depends on the power of your spindle, i. e. only if your spindle has a sufficient power reserve, you may actually set the maximum dipping depth. In case of doubt: When you mill deeper slots it is better to remove in more steps less material than too much at once. Usually, it is also more economic to mill a slot in several steps with less dipping depth and at higher rates of feed than at once and accordingly slower. General guidelines for the relationship of dipping depth and cutting edge : rigid foam up to 5-fold plastics (acrylic, etc.) up to 2-fold aluminium up to 0.5-fold steel up to 0.3-fold stainless steel up to 0.2-fold Please observe also the load display of the spindle controller, especially when you are working with bigger tool s on difficult to machine materials like stainless steel. It should not exceed a load of 80 %, if possible. So you should approach the specified dipping depth only stepwise and always watch your spindle load. Rigid foam Plastic Non-ferrous metal Stainless steel Schematic illustration of the dipping depth into different kinds of materials from rigid foam over plastics and aluminium up to stainless steel. With increasing hardness of the material, the spiral of the flute becomes flatter and the cutting edge becomes shorter. Choice of the Milling Direction Contrary to the circumstances on heavy machining centres, the quality of both edges of the milled slot will never be exactly the same when you work on lighter milling machines. While milling in the counter direction, the tool moves relatively regarded against the material. The chip size becomes increasingly bigger towards the middle. While milling in the same direction, the tool moves with the material; the chip size is reduced again until the exit of the cutting edge from the material. The cutting edge runs in the counter direction as well as in most parts of the same direction against massive material. However, immediately before the exit, there is not much material left. So the last bit will often be rather torn off instead of being cleanly cut. Therefore the counter direction becomes smoother than the same direction. However, this effect varies strongly with the characteristics of the material, the geometry and sharpness of the milling cutter and the machining parameters. Thus we recommend to mill internal contours clockwise and external contours counter-clockwise. relative naterial movement chip size worse cutting edge same direction cutter direction counter direction better cutting edge

64 64 Carbide and Cooling/Lubrication For working on most kinds of materials it is necessary or at least recommended to cool the cutting edge of the tool with air or lubricant. This improves the surface quality and prolongs the endurance of the tool. If cooling is not possible, the recommended minimum values for rotational speed should be adhered to; the feed rate, however, should not be set too slow. In this case, the heat dissipation will be made by the chips, otherwise you will risk that the material scorches. Recommended coolants/lubricants: /acrylic: dry processing with chip extraction or cooling with compressed air. Aluminium: spray lubricant ALU-N or minimum quantity lubricant WST 20. Steel/stainless steel: emulsion of spray lubricant AquaTec and water or minimum quantity lubricant WST 20. For manual application also cutting oil spray Alpha 93. What to Do in Case of Problems? If especially plastics should melt, the reason may be that the tool advances too slow and produces too much heat. Please reduce the rotational speed and increase the feed rate at the same time. If a milling cutter should become plugged, usually the chips have not been discharged quick enough. In such a case, the dipping depth and/or the feed rate have to be reduced. It may also help to use a different tool. Please note the hints on the number of cutting edges of milling cutters on page 62. When working on critical materials like extruded acrylic, milling cutters with polished flute have proven to be well suitable. Here the chips can hardly stick to the cutting edge. In case of a burr formation, you should increase the cooling. It could possibly become necessary to make also an additional finishing pass. Another possibility would be to increase the feed rate and to reduce rotational speed and removal rate at the same time. If a tool breaks rather frequently, the removal rate is too high or the true running of the spindle is not exact enough. Please reduce in such a case the feed rate and/or the dipping depth and exchange the collet chuck for test reasons. In case that your controller does not have a look-ahead function (point-to-point or look-ahead of just one vector), you should stay below the calculated maximum feed rate, especially when performing fine engraving works. For instance, if you engrave small fonts which consist of numerous little vectors, the machine always has to accelerate and slow down strongly again. Even if the controller calculates one vector in advance (e. g. vhf CNC 450), it cannot accelerate in a curve to maximum speed because each next but one vector will be in the dark. You have a similar situation when you drive with your car in the fog, when you can only see from one guiding pole to the next. So an optimum velocity along the path (as is the case with CNC ) can not be achieved. The bearings of the machine and the tool will be exposed to strong forces due to the strong acceleration and brake applications. On top of that, the machine can overshoot due to the mass inertia. This effect becomes obvious in a bucking of the machine which leads to results that are worse on the whole. The speed advantage can be neglected. Please interrupt the output process as soon as the machine starts bucking and restart it at reduced speed. If your system permits only lower rates of feed than it would be possible according to tool and material data (please note also the above-mentioned remarks concerning fine engraving works), you should reduce feed rate and rotational speed accordingly.
