Press the Control On button (3-5/). Turn the selector switch (3-5/2) on the switch box to Grind. The grinding wheels start rotating. Check the direction of rotation. The direction arrow (6-/) indicates the direction of rotation of the right grinding wheel. Figure 6- Direction of rotation After ensuring that the wheels are rotating in the prescribed direction, turn selector switch to 0. If the direction of rotation of the grinding wheel is incorrect, have the phase reversed by a qualified electrician. Fill the water tray to cm below the rim with water. The water tray is in working position, when the bow-type handle of the water tray is in vertical position and the grinding wheels are immersed in water. ATTENTION The grinding wheels must not come in contact with water in off position over long periods of time, since they become untrue otherwise. 24

7. Operation 7. General principles of grinding technology If a blade has become blunt, material must be removed from its surface to restore it to its original sharpness. For that, the knife in question is ground to produce its cutting edge. If, in the process, a burr appears on the blade, then the grinding process was successful and can be concluded. Now, before the final sharpness is achieved, the burr must be removed in a further step. This is done with a flap brush. As it is not only the sharp cutting edges but also the long service lives that define a blade, the cutting angle is another important indicator of a blade's performance. The smaller the cutting edge angle, the higher the theoretical service life. In practice, however, the cutting edge breaks off and is therefore no longer sharp when the cutting edge angle is too small. The cutting edge angles must therefore lie between 5 and 35. If the cutting edge angles are less than 5, the blade becomes so unstable that it breaks at the slightest resistance. If the cutting edge angle is greater than 35, the blade is extremely stable, but service life will not be as long. One more criterion for judging the properties of a cutting edge is the cutting edge profile. There are three different ground profiles: Tapered grinding Convex grinding Concave grinding Convex ground profiles can mostly be found on cutter blades and hand knives. Tapered and concave ground profiles are predominantly found on circular knives and blades. In general: Adhering to the profiles and the cutting edge angles specified by the manufacturer is required NOTICE Convex grinding is not possible with the KLA HV 53 Honing Machine for Circular Knives. 25

7. Operation 7.2 Switching on the grinding machine Press the Control On button (3-5/). Turn the selector switch (3-5/2) on the switch box to Grind. Figure 7-3 Placing the guard plate Turn hand wheel (7-4/) until grinding arm (7-/3) is aligned horizontally. Figure 7-4 Adjusting the working height Adjust all four safety slides (7-5/) so that the distance between safety slides and the machine is max. 5 mm. To shift, loosen the star knobs. Figure 7-5 Adjusting the safety slides Danger of injury from rotating knife. The safety slides must be adjusted correctly. CAUTION Danger of serious cut injuries! 27

7. Operation Turn the Fine Feed hand wheel (7-6/) clockwise until the knife no longer touches the grinding wheel. Turn the selector switch (3-5/2) on the switch box to Grind. The grinding wheels start rotating. Figure 7-6 Turning the Fine Feed hand wheel clockwise Turn the hand wheel (7-6/) anti-clockwise until the knife touches the grinding wheels. Depending upon how far the hand wheel has been turned, the grinding pressure and thereby the material removal rate is raised or lowered. Take care while unclamping the knife! Sharp knife edge! Danger of serious cut injuries! CAUTION Wear protective gloves. NOTICE There are two different switch positions: Hone for low material removal rate Grind for high material removal rate ATTENTION For double side grinding, turn the rotary knob (3-5/3) clockwise all the way to the stop. After one minute, lift the grinding arm and check knife sharpness. Once the grinding process has ended, switch off the machine and swivel the grinding device horizontally to the right (see Figure 7-) and unclamp the knife. 28

7. Operation 7.3. Single side grinding For single side grinding, mount a steel plate instead of the right grinding wheel. For angle adjustment, use the right column of the angle scale (see Chapter 7.6). Alternatively, release the clamping lever (7-7/) and carefully swivel the grinding device until the desired angle has been achieved. Tighten the clamping lever (7-7/) back again. Figure 7-7 Swiveling the grinding device ATTENTION The swivel angle must be taken into account during grinding angle adjustment. 29

7. Operation 7.4 Grinding of circular knives with d mm Never change the grinding device with clamped circular knife. Never dismantle the grinding device while the machine is on. CAUTION Take care while clamping the knife! Sharp knife edge! Danger of serious cut injuries! Wear protective gloves. For grinding smaller circular knives, the grinding device for d mm must first be dismantled. To do that, turn the clamping lever (7-8/) clockwise all the way to the stop. Figure 7-8 Dismantling the grinding device 2 While holding the grinding device with the left hand, turn the clamping lever (7-8/2) counter-clockwise all the way to the stop. The safety slides must be adjusted correctly. CAUTION Be careful while unclamping the knife! Sharp knife edge! Danger of serious cut injuries! Wear protective gloves. ATTENTION Only use switch position Hone when using the grinding device for d mm. Damage to knife and gears may occur otherwise. 3

7. Operation 7.5 Water tray After completing the grinding work, fold down the water tray (7-2/), since the grinding wheels will otherwise become untrue through permanent contact with water. Figure 7-2 Water tray 32

7. Operation 7.6 Adjusting the grinding angle The grinding angle is adjusted using the star knob (7-3/) on the right side of the machine. 2 On the machine housing, there is a scale (7-3/2) on which the grinding angle is displayed. Since the grinding angle changes with increasing wear of the grinding wheels, it must be re-aligned every day or after every dressing process. Figure 7-3 Grinding Angle scale To adjust the grinding angle, turn the star knob (7-4/2) to rotate the grinding wheels away from each other until the scale arrow points to 0. Then tighten the star knob (7-4/) to lock the scale arrow in place. 2 Rotate the grinding wheels towards or away from each other until they are visibly touching each other (Figure 7-5). Figure 7-4 Locking the scale arrow in place wrong right wrong Figure 7-5 Adjusting the safety slides Then release the lock on the scale arrow (7-4/) and rotate the grinding wheels towards each other until the desired grinding angle is displayed on the scale. 33

7. Operation The angle scale has two columns: Column : For double side grinding, indicated by. This scale applies to all knives that are ground symmetrically on both sides. Column 2: For single side grinding, indicated by. This scale only applies if a steel plate is used on the right side. If a steel plate is not used, the grinding device must be tilted at the appropriate angle (see Chapter 7.3.). Figure 7-6 Angle scale 34

7. Operation 7.7 Dressing of grinding wheels Dressing gives rise to abrasive particles (small fragments of abrasive grit and dust) which could enter the eyes. CAUTION Wearing protective glasses is mandatory. If the safety slides on the protective hood have been removed, only switch on the machine when the dressing device is mounted. Danger of serious injuries! 2 Grinding wheels that have become untrue are made true again with the HV 56 (7-7/) dressing device. Figure 7-7 Dressing the grinding wheels To dress the wheel, the adjustable safety slides (7-8/) on the protective hood (3-2/6) must be removed and the grinding wheels must be rotated away from each other. The dressing device is fixed on the machine hood using the four star knobs (7-7/2). Switch on the machine and make the grinding wheel edges true again with the dressing stone. After the dressing process, mount the safety slides (7-8/) back on the protective hood. NOTICE The grinding angle must be re-aligned after dressing (see Chapter 7.6). 35

7. Operation 7.8 Safety slides Incorrect adjustment of the safety slides can result in hands, hair and clothes getting caught in the honing machine. CAUTION The safety slides (7-8/) must always be adjusted so that the maximum distance between the grinding wheels and the safety slides is 3 mm. Figure 7-8 Safety slides 36

7. Operation 7.9 Changing the safety slides Pull out the mains plug before changing the grinding wheel. Only switch on the machine with the protective hood on. CAUTION To change the safety slides, remove the water tray (3-2/8) and dismantle the protective hood (3-2/6). Then rotate the safety slides away from each other and loosen the flange screws (both screws have a right-hand thread). Finally, mount the protective hood back again.
