6 Grounding To prevent electric shock and death from incorrect grounding wire connection: Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. Do not modify the Power Cord Plug provided with the tool. Never remove the grounding prong from the Plug. Do not use the tool if the Power Cord or Plug is damaged. If damaged, have it repaired by a service facility before use. If the Plug will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. Grounded Tools: Tools with Three Prong Plugs of electric shock. (See 3-Prong Plug and Outlet.) The grounding prong in the Plug is connected through the green wire inside the Power Cord to the grounding system in the tool. The green wire in the Cord must be the only wire connected to the tool s grounding system and must never be attached to an electrically live terminal. (See 3-Prong Plug and Outlet.) The tool must be plugged into an appropriate outlet, properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances. The Plug and outlet should look like those in the preceding illustration. (See 3-Prong Plug and Outlet.) Double Insulated Tools: Tools with Two Prong Plugs Tools marked with Grounding Required have a three wire cord and three prong grounding Plug. The plug must be connected to a properly grounded outlet. If the tool should electrically malfunction or break down, grounding provides a low resistance path to carry electricity away from the user, reducing the risk Tools marked Double Insulated do not require grounding. They have a special double insulation system which satisfies OSHA requirements and complies with the applicable standards of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., the Canadian Standard Association, and the National Electrical Code. (See Outlets for 2-Prong Plug.) SKU For technical questions, please call Page 6
7 Double insulated tools may be used in either of the 120 volt outlets shown in the preceding illustration. (See Outlets for 2-Prong Plug.) Extension Cords Grounded tools require a three wire extension cord. Double Insulated tools can use either a two or three wire extension cord. As the distance from the supply outlet increases, you must use a heavier gauge extension cord. Using extension cords with inadequately sized wire causes a serious drop in voltage, resulting in loss of power and possible tool damage. (See Table A.) The smaller the gauge number of the wire, the greater the capacity of the cord. For example, a 14 gauge cord can carry a higher current than a 16 gauge cord. (See Table A.) damp or wet areas. Symbology Double Insulated Canadian Standards Association When using more than one extension cord to make up the total length, make sure each cord contains at least the minimum wire size required. (See Table A.) If you are using one extension cord for more than one tool, add the nameplate amperes and use the sum to determine the required minimum cord size. (See Table A.) Make sure the extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition. Always replace a damaged extension cord or have it repaired by a qualified electrician before using it. The Power Cord must reach the work area with enough extra length to allow free movement while working. There must not be objects nearby that will present a hazard while working. General Operating Instructions Vertical Sharpening Procedures: Set the Drill Bit Sharpener in its vertical position with its End Cover (23) at the top. (See Figure C.) Check to make sure the Safety Hood (43) is in its closed (downward) position. (See Figure C.) Check to make sure the Power Switch (49) is in its OFF position. Then plug the Power Cord (40) into the nearest 120 volt, grounded, electrical outlet. (See Figure C.) Properly Sharpened Drill Bits: A Drill Bit (not included) is properly sharpened when it has the following characteristics: A sharp point in the center of the Bit. Two sharp and equal cutting edges. Two trailing edges that are slightly lower than the cutting edges. (See Figure B.) Push the Power Switch (49) to its ON position. Allow the Drill Bit Sharpener to run idle for one minute to check for normal operation. Only after the Grinding Wheel (32) reaches its top speed may the Drill Bit be sharpened. (See Figure C.) Horizontal Sharpening Procedures: Set the Drill Bit Sharpener in its horizontal position with its End Cover (23) to the right. (See Figure E.) CAUTION! Be careful not to touch the end of the Drill Bit after it is sharpened. The Bit will become hot! Repeat the above steps with the other side of the Drill Bit. Sharpen both sides the same amount of time, using the same amount of pressure. The Adjustment Knob: Remove the Drill Bit, and examine the Bit according to the Troubleshooting section near the end of this manual. Turn the Adjustment Knob (21) to the right to raise the Grinding Wheel (32). This will give you an aggressive cutting action. This is also useful when you are working with short Drill Bits. (See Figure D.) Lower the Grinding Wheel (32) by turning the Adjustment Knob (21) to the left. This is desirable when you want a finer ground edge, though it will take longer and require more repetitions. (See Figure D.) ADJUSTMENT KNOB (21) FIGURE D Slightly raise the Safety Hood (43). Raise the Work Piece Support (35-1) and push down on Upper and Lower Brackets (36 & 37). The Drill Bit can be rested on the Work Piece Support which will greatly improve stability and safety of the sharpening procedure. (See Figure E.) Loosen the A Screw (35-3). Adjust the Angle Stop Scale (35-4) to the desired cutting angle. Then re-tighten the Screw. NOTE: The Angle Stop Scale is adjustable 45 to the left and 45 to the right. (See Figure E.) 4. CAUTION! Always adjust the distance between the Grinding Wheel (32) and Angle Bracket (35-2) to within 1/16. To do so, loosen the B Screw (35-5). Slide the Angle Bracket to within 1/16 of the Grinding Wheel. Slightly raise the Safety Hood (43) above the Angle Bracket (35-2). (See Figure A.) Turn the Power Switch (49) to its ON position. Allow the Drill Bit Sharpener to run at full speed to check for normal operation. Only after the Grinding Wheel (32) reaches its top speed may the Drill Bit be sharpened. (See Figure A.) Select a clean Drill Bit to be sharpened, and place it firmly on the Angle Bracket (35-2) and against the Angle Stop Scale (35-4). (See Figure E.) Exert a slight inward pressure on the Drill Bit, making sure to hold the Bit firmly. Turn the Drill Bit Sharpener off when done. Remove the Drill Bit, and examine the Bit according to the Troubleshooting section near the end of this manual. CAUTION! Be careful not to touch the end of the Drill Bit after it is sharpened. The Bit will become hot! Repeat the above steps to the other side of the Drill Bit. Sharpen both sides the same amount of time, using the same amount of pressure. Maintenance And Servicing Procedures not specifically explained in this manual must be performed only by a qualified technician. To prevent serious injury from accidental operation: Turn the Power Switch (49) of the Drill Bit Sharpener to its OFF position and unplug the tool from its electrical outlet before performing any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning procedures. To prevent serious injury from tool failure: Do not use damaged equipment. If abnormal noise or vibration occurs, have the problem corrected before further use. Inspection, Maintenance, and Cleaning BEFORE EACH USE, inspect the general condition of the Drill Bit Sharpener. Check for loose screws, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken Grinding Wheel, damaged electrical wiring, and any other condition that may affect its safe operation. PERIODICALLY, remove the Inspection Hatch Cover (38) on the back side of the unit and clean out the SKU For technical questions, please call Page 11
12 accumulated dust as shown in the illustration below. Then replace the Inspection Hatch Cover. (See Figure F.) After Use, clean external surfaces of the tool with clean cloth. Keep the air vents free of foreign matter at all times. Do not use solvents to clean. Do not immerse any part of the Drill Bit Sharpener in liquid. 4. CAUTION! Do not use the Drill Bit Sharpener if its Power Cord (40) has been damaged. Have a qualified service technician replace the Cord before using. FIGURE F Sharpening Troubleshooting: If the tip of the Drill Bit is turning blue, it is overheating. Reduce amount of pressure and sharpening time. Cool the Drill Bit in water between sharpening. If one edge is longer than the other, and the point is not centered, sharpen the shorter side for a little more time. To prevent this from happening, sharpen both sides the same amount of time, using the same amount of pressure. If you are sharpening a broken (rather than a dull Drill Bit) and the time required to get a sufficient edge is too long, rough the Bit into shape first by using a bench grinder. Operation Troubleshooting: INSPECTION HATCH COVER (38) If you turn the Power Switch (49) to its ON position, but the unit does not start, check to make sure the Power Cord (40) is undamaged and properly plugged into its electrical outlet. Also check to make sure the Power Switch is not damaged and also check that the outlet is in proper operating condition. If the Grinding Wheel (32) is not cutting the material sufficiently, check to make sure the Wheel is not clogged with excessive debris. If necessary, have a qualified service technician clean or replace the Grinding Wheel. If you turn the Power Switch (49) to its OFF position, but the unit does not turn off, immediately unplug the unit from its electrical outlet and have a qualified service technician check it out.
