1 Installation Instructions for Vinyl Window with Integral Nailing Fin JII001 (07/05) Table of Contents Introduction...1 Handling...2 Precautions & Safety...2 Inspect and Prepare...3 Install Window...4 Complete Installation...6 King studs Header Trimmer studs Sill Cripple studs Sheathing Fully Sheathed Wall Installation The wall framing is covered by sheathing and the window is mounted with the nailing fin flush against the sheathing. King studs Header Trimmer studs Open-Stud Installation Open-stud installation is common in the Southwest and typically used with traditional stucco exteriors. The wall framing is not covered by sheathing and the window is mounted directly to the framing members. These illustrations show construction details complete with all components necessary for window installation. Do not attempt to install window if any of these components are missing. If necessary, call a contractor for assistance. Improper installation may result in denial of warranty coverage. Sill Cripple studs C orrectly installing your vinyl window will add to the lasting comfort and energy savings for the life of your new home. These instructions apply to all vinyl windows with integral nailing fin. Please read and fully understand all instructions before beginning. Any local building code requirements supercede these recommended installation instructions. If installing in a high wind area, see the structural engineering report for the product for specific fastener requirements. Newer construction methods have led to an increase in air and water tightness in buildings. This can frequently lead to negative interior air pressure. Negative air pressure can draw water through very small openings, increasing the risk of water leakage. This installation method seals the window to the weather barrier (typically building wrap) of the structure, which is typically the building wrap or building paper. This installation guide specifically addresses both sheathed wall and open-stud construction. These instructions apply only to windows with a horizontal flat sill. Installation such that the window sill is higher than 35 feet above ground level or any window installation into a wall condition not specifically addressed in this document must be designed by an architect or structural engineer. Degree of Task Complexity Do-It-Yourself Technician Proper assembly and installation of window/patio door products is critical to ensure proper operation and performance of our JELD-WEN family of products. Because structure design, construction methods and products can vary, we strongly recommend consultation with an architect or structural engineer prior to the installation of any JELD-WEN brand products. JELD-WEN disclaims any and all liability associated with the use and/or provision of these instructions. Any reliance upon the information or advice is at the risk of the party so relying. 3 Inspect Window Before beginning installation, it is critical to inspect the window for the following: Window frame edge Correct product (size, color, grid pattern, correct operation handing, etc.) Obvious damage and defects such as: Cosmetic damage Product squareness Cracked frame welds Splits, cracks, or missing sections in nailing fin longer than 6" Cracks, holes, or other damage to nailing fin within 1/2" of window frame Fig. 1. Maximum edge waffle Permanent edge waffles or distortions greater than 1/4" from plane of nailing fin (fig. 1) For side-by-side mulled units, a drip cap is required Examine frame top to determine if there is a drip cap on the unit as in fig. 2 Note: For mulled windows with one unit above the other, a drip cap is not necessary. If any of the above discrepancies exist, do not install the window; contact your dealer/distributor for recommendations. If the expected environmental conditions are likely to exceed the performance rating of the window, please contact us or your dealer/distributor for further recommendations. Installation of the window indicates there are no viewable defects, damage or expected environmental conditions that will exceed the performance rating of the window. Prepare Window 1 Remove shipping materials such as corner covers, shipping blocks or pads 2 Wipe nailing fin clean with dry cloth 3 Secure window locks, if applicable 4 Seal any gaps or openings at end of any horizontal mull joints with 100% silicone sealant Inspect Rough Opening mulled unit / muld yoonit / n two or more window units structurally joined together Fig. 2. Drip cap (window top corner) A rough opening should have the following characteristics: level / lévl / adj Rough opening should be 1/2" larger in width and height than a condition that exists when a surface is exactly horizontal (not to exceed actual measurement of window frame (not nailing fin) 1/16 on a two foot level or 1/8 on a Rough opening should be square (see tip), level, and plumb; four foot level) maximum deviation for level and plumb is 1/16" for every two feet of rough opening length (not to exceed 1/8"); adjust as needed Rough opening sill must be level, not crowned or sagged; adjust as needed The exterior face of the rough opening must be in a single plane with less than 1/8" twist from corner to corner Minimum double studs should be used at all rough openings The header should be supported on the trimmer (jack) studs and designed to assure that no load is transferred to the window unit For a retro-fit installation, after removing the old window, remove sufficient siding to expose at least 9" of intact building wrap; repair any rips or holes in building wrap before beginning installation; if necessary, apply additional building wrap in shiplap manner to meet the conditions identified in the following section Plane 1/2 TIP plumb / plum / adj Drip cap Window frame Nailing fin How to check for square: Measure from upper left corner to lower right corner of frame with tape measure Measure from upper right corner to lower left corner of frame with tape measure Compare measurements If both measurements are the same, the window frame is square If not, maximum difference for square is 1/8" for opening equal to or under 20 sq. ft. (e.g. 2' x 10', 4' x 5') and 1/4" for opening larger than 20 sq. ft. (e.g. 4' x 6', 5' x 5') a condition that exists when a surface is exactly vertical (not to exceed 1/16 on a two foot level or 1/8" on a four foot level) 1/4 Special Window Installations Open-Stud An Open-stud installation needs backing support for the building wrap/building paper and adhesive flashing. This backing support should be: a thin (max. 1/8" thick) sheet material such as aluminum or galvanized flashing, hard plastic sheeting, tile board, Energy Brace, or other thin sheet material sufficient width to span from the rough opening to the nearest stud that is not a part of the rough opening Backing support may be attached by any method (staples, tacks, construction adhesive, etc.) and must completely surround the rough opening as shown. Backing support must be applied before building wrap/building paper. After applying backing support, follow instructions for sheathed wall installation and interpret references to sheathing as being the backing support. Cut back building wrap overlap Flexible flashing Curved Window Ensure framing is sufficient around window perimeter to allow nailing fin to be nailed every 12" to the structure Prepare rough opening in same manner as for rectangular window Install window in same manner as for rectangular window except apply 6" wide conformable adhesive flashing to nailing fin and sheathing around curved edge Window opening Garden Window Double-plate rough opening sill Bridge each corner with 3" x 3" piece of self-adhesive flashing on the interior side Double-plated sill Install as for rectangular window except space fasteners every 8" around the window Note: Maximum load including snow is 150 lbs. We recommend installing knee bracing as designed by an architect or structural engineer to help support the window. It is also important to insulate underneath the window bottom board. 4 Prepare Rough Opening For unique installations such as open-stud, curved window, or garden window, refer to Special Window Installations. Sheathing must be completely dry and frost free for all installations. 1 Clean rough opening and surrounding sheathing with clean, dry cloth, beginning at top 2 If building wrap has not been applied prior to window installation, Cut a 12" wide strip of building wrap 12" longer than rough opening sill Tack building wrap strip below rough opening sill flush to rough opening edge extending 6" past corners; be sure to tack only within of rough opening sill edge If building wrap was applied before window installation, Trim building wrap 3" away from rough opening on header and sides; trim building wrap flush with sill edge Slit building wrap at header corners 9" at 45 angle (fig. 3); tape out of the way until window is installed and flashing applied; staple any other loose sections of building wrap around rough opening 3 Prepare sill surface as follows: Apply adhesive spray to exterior edge of rough opening covering building wrap and of sill surface Cut piece of self-adhesive flashing to rough opening sill length Peel off backing and apply self-adhesive flashing to building wrap overlapping of sill surface 4 Install continuous support as follows: Cut 1/4" thick wood (solid or exterior grade plywood) to following dimensions: Length: rough opening sill minus Width: measurement from nailing fin to interior edge of window frame minus 1/4" (fig. 4) Center the support between the sides and flush against the exterior edge; nail to rough opening sill (fig. 5) 5 Apply plastic drain screen as follows (refer to fig. 5): Cut piece of screen to rough opening sill length plus 2" Center and staple near the top edge on top of building wrap parallel to and 1/2" away from exterior sill edge Note: If using 9" wide flashing, apply second piece of plastic drain screen immediately below the first piece. 6 Ensure all fasteners are flush against sheathing within 6" of rough opening all the way around Install Window Install only in dry conditions and when everything is completely dry. Wall must be in vertical position. 1 Install window as follows: Make sure window is right side up and right side out as follows: Weep holes on bottom, facing exterior (fig. 6) Locks and/or operators on inside Place window into rough opening Note: The sill of the window must rest completely on a continuous support. The sill must be level. Building wrap Fig. 3. Cut back building wrap Fig. 6. Weep hole Fasten window through nailing fin hole no farther than and no closer than 3" from one lower corner (safety hint: make sure window is properly supported until fully fastened) Note: To allow for natural expansion and contraction, do not drive fasteners far enough to dent the nailing fin, and always use pre-punched nail holes. If there are no pre-punched nail slots, pre-drill 3/16" holes. Do not nail directly through vinyl. Shim side jambs accordingly (evenly space no more than 24" apart); shims should be snug, secured with sealant, and provide parallel shim support; side jambs must be straight and not allowed to bow in or out; do not shim header or sill Note: Shimming side jambs will prevent the frame from twisting under weather pressure loads. Low expansion foam is acceptable in place of shims around perimeter. Follow foam manufacturers instructions for application. Inspect and adjust for square, level and plumb Window Selfadhesive flashing WARNING Exterior To avoid personal injury or damage when working with windows, we recommend using at least two people for installation. Sheathing Nailing fin Fig. 4. 5 2 Securely fasten window through nailing fin holes near corners no farther than and no closer than 3" and then 12" apart all the way around the window including the header; make certain fastener heads are flat and flush against nail fin Note: Through improper handling, a nailing fin corner may become bent. If necessary to secure bent corner, drive a roofing nail into the sheathing just off the edge of the nail fin to hold it down. Do not fasten corners unless necessary. 3 Test window for proper operation; if not operating properly, remove window and repeat steps 1 and 2 4 Prepare self-adhesive flashing as follows: Cut strips of self-adhesive flashing One header piece 14" longer than header Two side pieces 12" longer than side One sill piece 10" longer than sill Note: If using 9" self-adhesive flashing, adjust measurements accordingly to leave overlap as shown in fig Apply adhesive spray as follows: Protect window frame and glass from over-spray Coat entire nailing fin (and back of drip cap if mulled), surrounding sheathing, and building wrap or building paper 6" from rough opening all around Follow adhesive spray manufacturer s instructions for tack time 6 Apply self-adhesive flashing as follows (refer to fig. 7): Note: Keep flashing from sticking to itself by peeling off backing during application, not before. Keep edge of self-adhesive flashing as close to window frame as possible and completely cover nailing fin. Apply sill piece; extend past corners (see tip) Note: The bottom edge of the sill piece must NOT seal the drain screen. Apply side pieces (starting from top); begin above top and extend past bottom corners (see tip) Apply header piece; extend past corners; overlap side pieces at each end (see tip) Press onto sheathing with j-roller paying special attention to press tightly at all overlap joints 7 Apply solvent-free polyurethane sealant to all TIP Use cardboard or a painter s shield for overspray protection. TIP Mark wall at corners to required overlap measurement (fig. 7) Apply second Mark wall IMPACT GLASS PRODUCT For windows with Impact Glass, fasten window through the side and head jambs using the predrilled holes as follows: Note: Be careful not to penetrate any operating hardware in side jambs. Do not apply fasteners through window sill. Apply a dab of sealant onto the threads of a #10 pan head screw and around the thread end of the screw head. The screw should be long enough to penetrate at least into the structural framing of the rough opening. Tighten screw until making contact with the vinyl, but do not overtighten. Apply silicone to head of screw. Tool the silicone, making sure the screw and hole are completely sealed. 6 Flashing Building wrap folded and taped up Apply header flashing last Apply sealant Overlap self-adhesive flashing properly at all four corners to prevent water leaks. Apply sealant Apply sill flashing first Apply third Fig. 7. Proper self-adhesive flashing application JII001 Installation Instructions for New Construction Vinyl Window with Integral Nailing Fin Page 5
6 Apply sealant four corners as follows: Follow sealant manufacturer s instructions for surface preparation and application Apply bead 1/4" wide to corners extending along both legs of the corner Tool sealant into fillet shape (fig. 8) 8 If building wrap was applied prior to window installation, Release building wrap from above header (previously taped up) and overlap header flashing; seal ends with building wrap tape or self-adhesive flashing (fig. 9); if necessary, and in addition, staple header flap If building wrap was not applied prior to window installation, Apply building wrap in shiplap manner At sill, tuck building wrap under previously applied 12" wide strip of building wrap Trim away from window frame at head and sides Seal side edges with sealant, building wrap tape or selfadhesive flashing; do not seal at head Note: For open-stud wall Avoid cutting or puncturing window installation flashing material. This will compromise the integrity of the installation. construction, building wrap/building paper must fully cover the backing support. Never use solvent-based sealant on vinyl product. Building wrap taped over flashing Flashing Fig. 8. Seal corner Fig. 9. Overlap flashing with building paper Complete Installation 1 Inspect installed window for any damage caused during construction 2 Remove remaining shipping materials (if applicable) 3 Ensure weep holes are clear of debris and/or sealant for proper water drainage; do not seal weep holes The following steps may be performed by others: 4 Install exterior wall surface within seven days of window installation 5 Maintain gap of 1/4"-3/8" between window frame and final exterior wall surface (siding, stucco, etc.) unless otherwise specified by local building codes or exterior wall surface manufacturer; seal gap with backer rod and high quality caulk Note: For integral J-channel vinyl product installed into a structure with either aluminum or vinyl siding, no expansion/contraction joint is needed. 6 Insulate void between rough opening and window frame with loose-fill fiberglass insulation; low/minimal expansion foam sealant may be used if required by local code 7 Apply interior trim as desired 8 Adjust window for best operation (if applicable) 9 Protect recently installed units from damage from plaster, paint, etc. by covering the units with plastic Care and Maintenance Tips shiplap/ shíplap/ adj a layering method in which each layer overlaps the layer below it so that water runs down the outside and cannot get behind the layers Do not use high expansion foam. It may cause window frame warp. Inspect vinyl surfaces and all moving parts at least annually (six months for coastal areas) for damage and debris Keep sliding parts clean and lubricated Clean vinyl surfaces with mild soap and water when dirty Inspect weatherstrip at least annually for damage and replace if necessary Inspect and maintain the sealed joint between the window and the exterior siding at least annually Ask for your copy of our complete guide to care and maintenance for your vinyl windows.
